Charles Manson follower seeks parole 47 years after killings

Patricia Krenwinkel, once a devout follower of cult killer Charles Manson and now the longest-serving female inmate in California, appeared again Thursday before a parole board — 47 years after she helped kill pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six other people.
Krenwinkel, 69, has been denied parole 13 times since her conviction in the 1969 slayings.
She acknowledged during her trial that she chased down and repeatedly stabbed Abigail Ann Folger, the 26-year-old heiress of a coffee fortune, at Tate's home and helped kill grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, the following night.
Los Angeles County prosecutors say Krenwinkel carved the word "war" into Leno LaBianca's stomach, then wrote "Helter Skelter" in blood on the couple's refrigerator.
Krenwinkel's attorney, Keith Wattley, successfully petitioned the state to hold the hearing a year early at the California Institution for Women, about 40 miles east of Los Angeles, where Krenwinkel is imprisoned.
"Ms. Krenwinkel is fully aware of the difficulty she faces," Wattley told The Associated Press in an email. "But California law officially recognizes a person's capacity to change and to address the factors that contributed to their previous behavior so that they can safely be paroled."

Eman Salehi, 28, was shot dead in the Bahraini city of Riffa. Activists have shared this photo of her online

A young mother has been gunned down in the street as her six-year-old son watched from inside their car in Bahrain.
Eman Salehi, a 28-year-old Shiite woman, worked as a sports journalist for Bahrain's state-run television broadcaster.
She was known for her piercing blue eyes and friendly demeanor. It's unclear what sparked the December 23 shooting.
That night, her car was stopped in the Bahraini city of Riffa, a community popular with members of the ruling Al Khalifa family and the military.
A man shot Salehi once in the head, then immediately turned himself into authorities.
The murder shocked the small island and has sparked controversy over who carried out the killing.
Activists abroad allege a member of Bahrain's Sunni royal family serving in the military pulled the trigger.
Bahrain's monarchy has a long love of Britain's own royal family and in November Prince Charles and his wife Camilla visited the country, which is repeatedly accused of human rights abuses.

Carrie Fisher's mother Debbie Reynolds (above together in 2015) died on Wednesday - a day after the Star Wars actress

Hollywood legend Debbie Reynolds died on Wednesday a day after the death of her daughter, telling family before a suspected stroke: 'I want to be with Carrie'.
The 84-year-old was rushed from her son Todd's Beverly Hills home at around 1pm after falling ill while planning her daughter's funeral.
She died in hospital hours later. Todd Fisher revealed on Wednesday evening how his mother had been shattered with grief since his sister's death the previous day.
On the morning of her death, she told him: 'I miss her so much, I want to be with Carrie,' according to TMZ.
Carrie Fisher, 60, died on Tuesday from complications which stemmed from a heart attack she suffered on Christmas Eve while flying to Los Angeles from London.
On Wednesday, Todd Fisher said he was 'heartbroken' by their back-to-back deaths. 'She's now with Carrie and we're all heartbroken,' he said.
While Fisher had made no funeral provisions, Reynolds knew 'exactly' what she wanted, her son previously said.
Speaking before her death, he told New York Daily News that his famous mother had already chosen out where she would be buried and that they owned a family plot.
All of his sister's estate would be handed over to her only daughter, Billie Lourd, he said.
At the time of their deaths, Reynolds and her daughter enjoyed a happy, close relationship after years of estrangement.
They did not speak for 10 years when Fisher was a young adult and battling drug addiction. She would later tell how she 'didn't want to be Debbie Reynolds daughter', and was haunted by the daunting legacy of her Hollywood legend parents.
Reynolds already boasted a dazzling film career by the time she gave birth to Fisher in 1956.

Crude oil climbs for fourth day for fresh 2016 high

Oil prices rose for a fourth straight session on Wednesday, with traders waiting to see if OPEC will make good on its promises to cut output in the new year.
On the New York Mercantile Exchange, light, sweet crude futures for delivery in February CLG7, +0.37%  rose 31 cents, or 0.6%, to $54.21 a barrel. If it closes at that level, it’ll be the highest settlement price for a front-runner contract since June 2015.
February Brent crude LCOG7, +0.59%  on London’s ICE Futures exchange climbed 34 cents, or 0.6%, to $56.42 a barrel.
Most market participants are waiting to see if major oil producers inside and outside the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries will deliver on pledges to curtail production beginning next month. The deal, if carried out as planned, should reduce global supply by about 2%.
Venezuela, an OPEC member whose economy has suffered greatly due to low oil prices, on Tuesday committed to cutting 95,000 barrels a day in line with the pact.
While market participants are at present optimistic that participating nations will abide by the pact, there is still a degree of skepticism about how closely and for how long producers will comply with individual quotas.

Another train accident, another probe ordered: How can Indian Railways resurrect itself?

Indian Railways (PTI)
Just over a month after more than 150 people were killed and nearly 200 injured when Indore-Patna Express jumped off tracks near Kanpur, another train accident took place in central Uttar Pradesh today. Fifteen bogies of Sealdah-Ajmer Express derailed near Rura in Kanpur injuring over 40.
The train was crossing a canal when the coaches toppled off the old bridge. Most of the passengers were asleep but luckily the slow speed of the train prevented casualties.
Soon after the accident, the Railway Ministry did what it does after every such incident - "ordered a probe to ascertain the cause". What happens to reports of such probes is anybody's guess. While the number of files of such inquiries keep on increasing, the big question is why the Indian Railways, the third largest rail network in the world after US and China, has been struggling to improve its passenger safety record?
According to NCRB data, 28,360 train accidents took place in 2014. What's plaguing the Indian Railways?
The concerned authorities are going full speed to visualise PM Modi's ambitious scheme of running bullet trains in India. India and Japan have already agreed on a fully-elevated bullet train corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The project would cost nearly Rs 10,000 crore.
Every Rail Budget, we see a long list of new trains being announced, keeping in view the 'sentiments' of the ruling party's vote bank. Sadly, passenger safety and security is last on priority.

The holiday season is finally, really, actually upon us.
This time of year means different things to different people, but for most of us, some gifts will be exchanged.
This tech list is more general. Based on what I've used, and what I've heard friends and family asking for this year. These are higher-end gadgets, but if you've got a really special giftee, I can't see them being disappointed. More importantly, these products are still available before the holidays are here.

Dozens of Russians died this week from drinking bath oil because they couldn't afford real alcohol

Russia’s “surrogate” alcohol problem took a deadly turn over the weekend, with scores of people in the Siberian city Irkutsk drinking poisonous bath oil that contained alcohol. Seventy-two have died, leaving three children orphaned, and another 46 have been hospitalized in the city that hugs the world’s deepest lake, Baikal.
The mass poisoning was a startling reminder of the economic woes Russia has faced under the double blow of low oil prices and Western sanctions, and its growing surrogate alcohol crisis. Up to 12 million Russians each year drink surrogate alcohol, which can include perfume, after-shave, antifreeze, and window cleaner.
“People don’t have the money to buy a normal product in the store, so they search for something cheaper, and cheaper as a rule is surrogate alcohol,” said Alexander Nikishin, director of the National Museum of Russian Vodka. “It’s a problem of people lacking money.”
