94-year-old who served behind Nazi lines reveals the most terrifying thing he experienced
A 94-year-old World War II veteran held a Reddit AMA, with the help of his grandson, in which he provides a startling look at his time serving behind Nazi lines as an intelligence staff sergeant.
John Cardinalli, who was sworn to secrecy for 65 years following the end of World War II, has taken to Reddit to explain his time with the US Office of Strategic Services. The OSS was the forerunner of the CIA, and it was dedicated to coordinating espionage and intelligence gathering behind enemy lines during WWII.
Cardinalli was unable to tell his story until the FBI and CIA declassified his mission in 2008. Now, realizing the historical importance of his role, Cardinalli has written the book "65 Years of Secrecy" about his roles during the war.
Pregnant secretary of Pope Francis found dead in her Rome apartment
The Pope's pregnant receptionist has been found dead in her apartment on the outskirts of the city.
Miriam Wuolou, a 34-year-old of Eritrean origin, was seven-months pregnant when her body was discovered.
She had worked at Pope Francis' home and a priests' guesthouse called Santa Marta for years.
The Italian press reports she worked as a kind of gatekeeper for the Pontiff, as well as for the bishops and cardinals who stay there.
The Pope opted to live at the Santa Marta guesthouse after his appointment in 2013, rejecting the grand papal apartments because he found them too sumptuous and he feared isolation.

Floyd Mayweather's entourage, The Money Team, got into a major accident on an L.A. freeway ... critically injuring one member of Floyd's crew ... 3m360 has learned.
The crash happened Tuesday night on the 10 freeway -- 3 TMT vans were rolling eastbound when one of them smashed into an 18-wheeler. Sources on the scene tell us one passenger in the van, not the driver, was hurt so badly he could lose an eye.
You can see in the video, the front left side of the van sustained major damage.
We're told Floyd was in the second vehicle in the caravan which was not involved in the accident. It's unclear if the driver of the truck was injured.
Today is Floyd's 39th birthday. He'd flown into LAX Tuesday, and was rolling back to Las Vegas when the accident happened.

Jose Mourinho vs Ryan Giggs: Manchester United fans vote for who they want as their next manager
Manchester United's supporters have voted overwhelmingly in favour of Jose Mourinho becoming the club's next manager ahead of Ryan Giggs, the Manchester Evening News report.
Louis van Gaal is expected to leave the club at the end of the season - 12 months before his three-year contract at Old Trafford ends.
Mourinho and Giggs are the two most likely candidates to replace him, with Ed Woodward keen on appointing Mourinho, and Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Alex Ferguson in favour of Giggs.
The knights, though, are in the minority. On the Red Issue, United We Stand and Red News fanzine websites, Giggs has scored incredibly low with supporters in 'next manager' polls.

Robotic third arm turns musician into cyborg drummer
After an accident fused a quartet of robotic limbs to his body, nuclear physicist Dr. Otto Octavius devoted himself to a life of crime and fighting Spider-Man. However, villainy isn't the only option for people either blessed or cured with extra mechanical appendages—they can also choose to rock.
Researchers at Georgia Tech's Center for Music Technology have created a robotic arm that attaches to a drummer's body and improvises drum parts based on what the human drummer is playing.
Gil Weinberg, the director of the Center for Music Technology, says in a video about the project that music is an ideal challenge for researchers working in the area of integrating robotic limbs into human movement. “Music is something that is very timely," said Weinberg, who also led the project. "You really need to do things on the right millisecond. It's also very spacial. You need to go to the right places.
This lightweight robotic exoskeleton is getting paralyzed people on their feet once again
"I am not the robot, I wear the robot," Steven Sanchez said of the Phoenix robotic exoskeleton that is helping paralyzed people walk again. The Phoenix, developed by SuitX, is a modular robotic device that enables people with limited mobility walk with the fluidity of natural movement.
Sanchez, now 28-years-old, was paralyzed 11 years ago in a BMX accident. He was casually playing around with fellow high schoolers on his bike when an accident left him immobile from the waist down.
For the last four years he's been working with SuitX on the development, design, and technical execution of the lightweight machinery that's helped him regain mobility. Sanchez, a machinist by trade, is one of the first people in the world to walk with the Phoenix skeleton equipped.
Cabin smoke forces evacuation from JAL plane in snowstorm
More than 150 passengers used escape slides to evacuate from a Japan Airlines jet after engine trouble apparently caused smoke to flow into the cabin during a snowstorm, the airline said.
Flight 3512, a Boeing 737, was preparing to depart from New Chitose Airport serving near Sapporo to Fukuoka when the incident occurred around 3 p.m. Tuesday, the airline said.
According to a JAL spokesman, the aircraft was heading to the runway when it was ordered back to the terminal due to heavy snow.
Kesha fans want to crowdfund $2 million to pay out the rest of her Sony contract
A New York judge may have denied Kesha’s request to circumvent the terms of her recording contract last week, but the setback has only ignited her fans’ creativity for ways of showing support.
The pop singer and songwriter’s career has been in limbo since she accused longtime collaborator Lukasz Gottwald (aka Dr. Luke) with sexual assault and battery and he fired back with a countersuit. Sony, the label both of them have been working under, has remained silent on the issue, leaving Kesha’s ability to record or release any new music in limbo.
Nigerian navy kills pirate, storms, rescues thrice-hijacked oil tanker
LAGOS – Nigerian sailors rescued a hijacked oil tanker in a dramatic night-time rescue in which they killed one pirate, the Nigerian navy announced as it escorted the ship into Lagos harbor Monday.
The Panama-flagged Maximus, owned by a company in the United Arab Emirates and on lease to a South Korean shipping company, steamed in with four captured hijackers from Nigeria and Ghana and the crew of 18 from India, Pakistan, China, South Korea, Sudan and Ghana, said Rear Adm. Henry Babalola.
He said the navy is still searching for two crew taken hostage by two hijackers who escaped in a pirate vessel. The Indian defense attache, Capt. Gautam Marwaha, said one hostage is Indian and the other is believed to be Pakistani. He said they have received no ransom demand.
15 things you should do right before a big presentation
You have to give a big, important presentation in just 15 minutes. Your heart is racing, your palms are damp — you're starting to panic.
It's completely normal. In fact, most speakers, beginners and veterans alike, readily admit to feeling nervous in the moments leading up to a big speech or presentation.
Darlene Price, president, of Well Said, Inc. and author of "Well Said! Presentations and Conversations That Get Results," says instead of trying to lose the butterflies, you should aim to leverage them.
"The adrenaline surge can fuel your body with the energy and enthusiasm necessary for a great performance," she explains.
Whether you're stepping to the front of the room to speak to just a few people, or making a grand entrance in a ballroom to address thousands, here are 15 ways to effectively use the moments before you present to prepare your body and mind for peak performance
1. Talk positively to yourself.
Claim your success before you begin, Price says.
"Let's learn from the experts in sports psychology. They've proven that an athlete's positive self-talk prior to and during a performance consistently creates a higher win rate," she explains.
What's more, research suggests that using your first name or the pronoun "you" instead of "I" can make it easier to deal with stressful experiences.
In the minutes leading up to your presentation, say over and over within yourself, "You are a dynamic speaker!" "You are enthusiastic and engaging!" "You are prepared and confident!"
"Write your own set of self-affirmations and confidently declare them," she advises. "Your words will create a self-fulling prophecy."

While taking a tour around the school, we were saddened by its failing structures and the health conditions under which its students lived. As a matter of urgency, we have identified that one of the most pressing and immediate needs of the students relates to the state of their toilets.

Drug courier nabbed with 33 pounds of cocaine
BERLIN – A suspected drug courier has been caught at Duesseldorf airport with 15 kilograms (33 pounds) of cocaine in his luggage and German authorities have arrested nine more people in subsequent raids.
Police and prosecutors said the 35-year-old man, from Witten outside Duesseldorf, was arrested Sunday after flying in from the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo via Madrid. The cocaine was found in his suitcase.
The arrest followed an investigation into suspected drug smuggling that was launched in November. Later Sunday, police in Witten and in Bochum raided nine apartments, arresting eight men and a woman.
Authorities accuse the group of importing around 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of cocaine in total to Germany, valued at 3.5 million euros ($3.9 million), as well as a smaller quantity of marijuana.
Air fresheners and scented candles 'are to blame for pollution in the home that KILLS 40,000 a year'
Lives are being put at risk from air pollution inside homes caused by everything from boiler fumes to air fresheners and scented candles, it has been claimed.
The warning comes from a joint study by the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health to be published this week.
The danger of pollution in the street from car fumes is well understood, but many people are ignorant of the risks from air inside the home.
Potential dangers: Research in York found raised levels of a Volatile Organic Compound called limonene, which is used heavily in air fresheners (left) and scented candles (right), to give a lemon citrus smell
The drive to cut energy bills by insulating properties - keeping out drafts and installing windows that do not open - is playing a part in trapping a potentially toxic cloud of air.
The report, Every Breath We Take, warns that at least 40,000 deaths a year in the UK can be linked to the effect of air pollution outside and inside the home.
According to the report ‘indoor air pollution may have caused or contributed to 99,000 deaths annually in Europe’.
Hacker's guide to safety online: 'Entire banking system is fundamentally flawed - you're giving access to your cash'
Mustafa Al-Bassam was a 16-year-old schoolboy when he was arrested for his role in cybercrimes committed by LulzSec, a gang of hackers.
In 2011, it targeted the websites of the CIA in the US, the Serious Organised Crime Agency in the UK, Fox and Sony.
The group’s actions caused serious financial damage. But it also shone a light in some dark corners of world politics and exposed the virtual weaknesses of big organisations.
Last autumn, a play at the Royal Court Theatre in London called Teh Internet Is Serious Business told their story.
Mustafa – from South London and previously known online as tFlow – was handed a 20-month suspended sentence at the age of 18, shortly before taking his A-levels, and ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid community work.
He is now 20 and studying computer science at King’s College London.
After he gave a hacking demonstration at a recent conference on financial crime, The Mail on Sunday tracked him down so he could give his inside – and sometimes alarming – view of online security and provide advice on how we can protect our identity and finances.
Q. How did you gain your skills on the internet at such a young age?
A. I spent a lot of time on my computer as a child and taught myself how to program when I was about nine, using freely available online resources.
This might seem extraordinary, but it is a common story. Many people learn to program as a child, and it is going to become more common now that the UK is pushing for programming to be taught in secondary and primary schools.
Q. In your past life working on the other side of the law, did you consider yourself a ‘black hat’ hacker, someone whose prime intent was to breach internet security? And would you describe yourself now as a white hat wearer?
A. I think the white hat versus black hat label is an unhelpful oversimplification of an activity that covers the entire range of human motivation. The ethics of hacking are not black or white, but more 256 shades of grey, just like any other activity in life.
Michigan police say 6 dead in random shooting spree, suspect arrested
The accused gunman who police say killed six people and wounded two others during a rampage in Michigan on Saturday night is a married father of two who was working as an Uber driver, USA Today reported.
Jason Dalton, 45, passed a background check when he was hired by Uber, the company told the paper. Dalton had no criminal record and only five traffic violations, police said.
A Michigan prosecutor said authorities were investigating a Facebook post that indicated Dalton picked up Uber customers around the time of the shootings. Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting says he was aware of the post, but was not prepared to discuss it.
Dalton lived just outside Kalamazoo, where the shootings occurred, in a ranch-style house with his wife of at least 15 years and two children, ages 10 and 15, according to USA Today.
