The most complicated situation in the world just got even trickier

Russian warplanes have been conducting airstrikes over Syria since late September, sometimes causing tension with Turkey when its planes come too close to the Turkish border.

These tensions finally came to a head on Tuesday, when a Russian warplane allegedly violated Turkish airspace and was shot down by Turkish F-16s.

It was an escalation of the conflict that was "not entirely unexpected," said Jonathan Schanzer, vice president of the Washington, DC-based think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Turkey and Russia have released competing maps showing where a Russian warplane violated — or steered clear of, depending on the point of view — Turkish airspace before it was shot down early Tuesday.

Shortly after the jet was downed, the Turkish military published a radar map demonstrating the reported flight path of the jet it shot down, which Ankara is using as proof that the pilots violated the country's airspace:

The blue line is the Turkish border, and the red arrow is pointing to the spot at which the warplane reportedly entered Turkish airspace.

Chicago protesters march as police release video of officer shooting teen

Protesters took to the streets of Chicago late Tuesday after police released a graphic dash-cam video showing an officer shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

McDonald was killed in October 2014. The city's mayor has called for peace.

"I believe this is a moment that can build bridges of understanding rather than become a barrier of misunderstanding. I understand that the people will be upset and will want to protest when they see this video," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. "We as a city must rise to this moment."

A school is 'in lockdown' after reports gunshots were fired at a car outside this morning.

Police were called to an incident outside Anfield Road School in Anfield Road, Liverpool.

Residents are being told by officers to stay in their homes, and the road, which runs parallel to Anfield Road School, has been cordoned off and access is currently restricted.

A spokesperson from Anfield Road School told the Liverpool Echo they were unable to confirm whether an incident had taken place.

But police have issued a statement confirming an investigation is underway after reports from the public a car had been shot at.The spokesman said: “Merseyside Police is investigating reports of a firearms discharge in Anfield this morning.

"Patrols were called to Anfield Road at about 9am after several members of the public reported a shot was fired towards a car.

"Officers are in attendance and detectives are carrying out house to house and CCTVenquiries in the area.

"Patrols have been stepped up to reassure the community."

Turkey shoots down Russian warplane on Syrian border

Turkey has shot down a Russian warplane on the Syrian border, a senior Turkish official has said. According to Al Jazeerah, the plane was shut down on Syrian territory in Latakia's Yamadi village.

The plane was downed by the Turkish military according to the rules of engagement because it violated Turkish airspace, the Turkish official said.

Belgian police asked people not to share information about anti-terror raids so they started posting cat photos

A request by Belgium police for members of the public not to share information of anti-terrorism raids on social media, prompted an inventive response from Twitter users. As the Belgian capital remains in lockdown while raids continue, the hashtag #BrusselsLockdownbegan trending.

However, the images posted were not of the deserted city streets with police cordons, but of cats. The hilarious response demonstrated the good humour of the Belgium people even in times of crisis, as they endeavoured, in the most imaginative way possible, to support the police services.

The images of cute kittens countered the images of violence and gunman that usually accompany anti-terror raids. Commentators acknowledged the witty response. "#Catstorm on #BrusselsLockdown = the best of human nature responding to the worst of human nature. Hope all are safe," wrote one Twitter user poignantly.

French police have released this picture of the third suicide bomber who took part in the attack on the Stade de France last Friday night.

Cops have published the image in the hope the public can help identify him.

The French National Police posted a photo of the man on Twitter this evening.

The picture reportedly shows a man known as M al-Mahmod, according to the BBC.

He is believed to have entered the Greek island of Leros with another terrorist travelling under the name of Ahmad al-Mohammad.

The man was one of three people killed in attacks at the stadium.

The bombers had tried to get into the Stade de France during the international friendly match between France and Germany, but were blocked at the turnstyles.

Europe's most wanted man has evaded capture once again after heavily-armed police officers launched raids across Brussels and arresting 16 people.

Salah Abdeslam was not arrested by police in Belgium during 19 raids linked to an "imminent" threat to the European nation from suspected Islamist fanatics.

At a press conference this at around 11.30pm UK time on Sunday, Belgian prosecutors revealed one suspect drove towards police after being spotted.

Officers dodged the car but were forced to fire shots at it and then arrested the person inside.

Russia is putting the words 'For Paris' on some bombs planned for targets in Syria

Russian ground crew are inscribing the words "For Paris" on some bombs destined to be dropped on targets in Syria, in a message of solidarity with the victims of last week's Paris attacks.

A video posted online by the Defence Ministry here also shows a serviceman writing "For Our Guys" on a bomb at Russia's Hmeymim airbase.

"Pilots and technicians of Hmeymim airbase have sent their message to terrorists by priority airmail," said a caption accompanying the post.

Russia has intensified strikes on Syrian militants, including from Islamic State, which has claimed responsibility for the attacks that killed 130 people in Paris and for downing a Russian airliner in Egypt last month, killing all 224 on board.

Russian politicians have said the Paris attack underscores the need for the West and the Kremlin to bury their differences and join forces to take on militants in Syria.

Members of the band Eagles of Death Metal are talking about the night terrorists stormed their concert in France and killed 89 people.

In a preview clip produced by Vice, band members Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme describedto Vice's Shane Smith how their Friday night show earlier this month became a scene of the worst violence in Paris since World War II.

"Several people hid in our dressing room," Hughes told Smith, saying everyone there was killed "except for a kid who was hiding under my leather jacket."

The attack on November 13 was the culmination of a massive terrorist operation that ended the lives of some 130 people across the French capital.

Most of the people killed were at the Bataclan theatre, where fans gathered to watch the Eagles of Death Metal perform.

Lost island of Ancient Greece may have been found in the Aegean Sea

An international team of archaeologists believe they had discovered an island in the Aegean Sea that was once the ancient city of Kane, site of an epic sea battle between the Athenians and the Spartans in 406 B.C.

The Arginusae islands, now called the Garip islands, lie only a few hundred yards off the coast of Turkey, National Geographic reported Friday. Ancient historical sources refer to three Arginusae islands but the exact location of the third has long been unclear, disappearing from maps as far back as the 16^th century.

Researchers determined what is now a peninsula was once an island after drilling into the ground and examining rock samples, the magazine reported.

The Athenians crushed the Spartans in the battle of Arginusae, but the victory was short-lived.

Missing Washington College student commits suicide

A troubled student whose disappearance prompted the weeklong closure of the Washington College campus in Maryland was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Saturday in Pennsylvania, police said.

Jacob Marberger, 19, was a sophomore at the small college in Chestertown on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The school was closed Monday after his parents reported that he had a gun and they were unable to reach him.
