Nairobi residents get scare after six lions briefly slip out of city-adjacent national park

Nairobi residents get scare after six lions briefly slip out of city-adjacent national park

A team of wildlife rangers went out to find the lions 'prepared for anything' and return them to the park, but the lions were later spotted back in the park, having made their own way back.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Six lions walked out of Nairobi National Park and were roaming through parts of the city on Friday, scaring residents for a few hours before the big cats returned to the reserve.
The lions were first spotted at 4 a.m. near a hospital in the suburb of Langata, and later near Kibera, Kenya’s largest slum, said Kenya Wildlife Service spokesman Paul Udoto.
A team of wildlife rangers went out to find the lions “prepared for anything” and return them to the park, but the lions were later spotted back in the park, having made their own way back, Udoto said.
Nairobi National Park’s 117-square-kilometres is home to endangered black rhinos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife. The animals roam just 10 kilometres from downtown Nairobi, which lies north of the park.
Occasionally lions will clash with people on the southern side, which is not fenced.
In 2012 six lions were killed after the pride of eight lions attacked and killed eight goats of Masaai herdsmen. Only about 2,000 lions are left in Kenya; the devastating effect of years of hunting and then poaching.
The government has announced plans to build a railway that will traverse part of the reserve. Conservationists have opposed the railway line, saying it will further damage wildlife habitat.

Facebook, Google, and Twitter support Apple in its war with the FBI

Tim Cook
Apple is going to war with the FBI.
The bureau wants the Cupertino, California, tech company to help it unlock an iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino shooters. But Apple refuses, arguing that doing so would set a dangerous precedent and make all its users less safe.
Battle lines are being drawn. On one side, those who argue that Apple has a duty to aid law enforcement in any way it can, and on the other, those who fear that the case risks setting a dangerous precedent — that companies can be forced to hack their users.
Here's what the tech industry is saying:

Manny Pacquiao, after being dropped by Nike, posts Bible verse that says men who have sex with men ‘are to be put to death’

Manny Pacquiao shares and then deletes this Instagram post.

Following up on his belief that people in same-sex relationships are “worse than animals,” Manny Pacquiao reportedly quoted a bible verse on Instagram that says two men who have sex with each other “are to be put to death."
The boxer — who was dropped by Nike on Wednesday — posted, then deleted, Leviticus 20:13, according to ABS CBN News, writing “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”
The post had more than 18,000 likes and was up for roughly two hours before it was deleted, ABS CBN reported. It also said that Pacquiao denied quoting the verse in 2012, stating that he had a gay relative but was against same-sex marriage because it is the word of God.
Pacquiao also quoted another verse in the deleted post that seemingly was directed at criticism he’s received for his views.
Quoting Luke 6:22-23, he wrote “Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son Of Man. … Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.”

what Google's CEO just said about Apple's battle with the FBI

Google CEO Sundar Pichai just weighed in on Apple's battle with the FBI, which has ordered Apple to help it unlock the phone of one of the shooters who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, last year in an apparent terrorist act.
In a series of tweets, Pichai wrote that although Google gives "law enforcement access to data based on valid legal orders," that is "wholly different than requiring companies to enable hacking of customer devices and data," which could set a "troubling precedent."
Apple is fighting the court order mandating that it help the FBI unlock an iPhone that belonged to one of the shooters by creating software that would allow the intelligence agency to have an unlimited number of attempts to enter the phone's passcode before it auto-wipes.
CEO Tim Cook of Apple responded on Wednesday by calling it a "chilling" demand that "would undermine the very freedoms and liberty our government is meant to protect." He's arguing that to help the FBI unlock the phone would basically be providing a dangerous "master key" and that the agency is essentially "asking Apple to hack our own users."
So Pichai's stance is, basically, we support Apple — we will give law enforcement data when we need to, but we will not put in a "backdoor" for the government.
Here's his full response:

NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton & Donald Trump both announced their support for a U.S. judge’s ruling that would force the tech giant to unlock a smartphone

NYC PAPERS OUT. Social media use restricted to low res file max 184 x 128 pixels and 72 dpi
New York’s top cop and the bombastic billionaire running for president both agree that Apple should help the FBI break into the San Bernardino killer’s locked iPhone.

NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton and GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump both announced their support for a U.S. judge’s Tuesday ruling that would force the tech giant to unlock a smartphone used by Syed Farook before his bloody terror rampage on an office holiday party in December — even though Apple called the court mandate a “dangerous" precedent

“No device, no car and no apartment should be beyond the reach of a court-ordered search warrant,” Bratton, who leads the nation's largest police force, said in a Wednesday statement.

As the threats from (ISIS) become more divergent and complex, we cannot give those seeking to harm us additional tools to keep their activity secret,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Trump scoffed at the tech giant’s concerns that the order would set a well-intentioned but ultimately “dangerous” precedent that could allow the FBI to unlock anyone’s iPhone.

Th“Apple, this is one case — and this is a case where we should certainly be able to get into the phone,” the businessman-turned-politician said on FOX News Wednesday morning, adding that information about the killer’s motive could be stashed on the device.

By default, Apple has encrypted its iPhones to allow them only to be accessed using a passcode.

FBI investigators have not been able to unlock Farook’s password-protected phone since his December killing spree. Federal prosecutors told the judge they can’t access the county-owned work phone used because they don’t know his passcode — prompting the judge to demand Apple crack into the device.e order from U.S. Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym requires Apple to supply software the FBI can load onto Farook's county-owned work iPhone to bypass a self-destruct feature that erases the phone's data after too many unsuccessful attempts to unlock it. The FBI wants to be able to try different combinations in rapid sequence until it finds the right one.

Tim Cook called the order “dangerous” in a letter to customers on Wednesday.
