19 Worst Things About Woodstock '99

Woodstock 1999

Woodstock '99 was supposed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "peace, love and happiness." Instead, the Rome, New York festival earned the infamous distinction of "the day the Nineties died." There were tons of contributing factors that made the fest the anti-Woodstock: Organizers trying to wring every last dollar from festivalgoers from exorbitant ticket prices to costly water bottles, a festival site built atop hot tarmac in late-July heat, a poorly curated and scheduled lineup and an angry, aggressive crowd that left a charred festival site and sexual assaults in its wake. We revisited the disaster at Griffiss Air Force Base to break down the 19 worst things that happened at Woodstock '99.

1. The Water ProblemWith about 220,000 people in attendance and another 10,000 working the festival, Woodstock '99 temporarily made the festival site the third most populated city in New York state. Now imagine turning off that city's water supply. With temperatures hovering from the high 80s to, in some accounts, hitting the 100s, water became a necessity. Unfortunately, most festivalgoers didn't heed the warning to bring an adequate supply themselves. When people went to purchase water, they were met with a $4 price tag per bottle. There were some free fountains, but the lines to use those often resembled a Disneyland ride. Some were smashed in frustration, causing minor flooding in the area. The situation was so bad that, after the festival, lawyers for some festivalgoers threatened to sue organizers for negligence.
2. Hot TarmacIf the late-July heat was absorbed by greenery like at most fests, the temperature wouldn't have been as much of an issue, but much of the Griffiss Air Force Base was tarmac and concrete — materials the sun's rays just bounce off of. On top of that, there was a 1.5-mile walk between the festival's two main stages, so festivalgoers had to trek across these boiling runways in upper-80s weather. The Baltimore Sun reported that halfway through the weekend, "More than 700 had been treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration." Deactivated hangars provided some of the only shade, so huge crowds gathered at the "Emerging Artists" stage and had to endure sets by artists like Bijou Phillips simply to escape the sun.
3. Insane Clown Posse's Money GiveawayInsane Clown Posse created a little mayhem during their set at Woodstock '99. Performing on the East Stage on Friday night before George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic, ICP was the first act to incite the crowd "by throwing $100 bills into the audience and watching gleefully while a melee ensued,"the San Francisco Examiner reported. Considering how expensive water was at the fest, and how personal pan pizzas were $12, it's not surprising those Benjamins created such a ruckus.
4. Kid Rock's Recycling ProgramWhile much of the chaos at Woodstock '99 came on Saturday evening, Kid Rock planted some seeds of aggression during his early-afternoon set. Sandwiched between slots by the Tragically Hip and Wyclef Jean, Kid Rock took to the stage and, according to the San Francisco Examiner, "demanded that the kids pelt the stage with plastic water bottles," perhaps making a statement about the high price of hydration.

5. The Constant Shout of "Show Your Tits!"The horndog ratio in the Woodstock '99 crowd rivaled only that of your local Hooters. Whenever a woman walked onstage, whether to emcee or perform, they were immediately greeted with demands to "Show your tits!" When Rosie Perez took the stage to introduce DMX, the crowd shouted their request, and the actress dropped probably the funniest, most memorable line of Woodstock '99: "$3.99, Blockbuster, go rent Do the Right Thing."
6. Dave Matthews: HornballThe amount of flashing in the audience during the Dave Matthews Band's set inspired their namesake singer to remark, "Today, there's an abundance of titties." Yes, Dave Matthews said that out loud, into a microphone, in front of thousands and thousands of people. Somehow he topped the ridiculousness of the "Too Much" lyrics: "Ooh, traffic jam, got more cars than a beach got sand."
7. America, Fuck Yeah! The Tragically Hip Get Shouted DownWhen the meathead crowd wasn't hectoring ladies on stage, they were getting their xenophobia on. When long-running Canadian alt-rockers Tragically Hip started singing "O Canada," the same crowd that cheered when Rage Against the Machine lit an American flag on fire was somehow patriotic enough to shout back with "The Star Spangled Banner" (and also, according to SPIN, throw rocks and bottles).
8. Verne TroyerWhere Woodstock '69 had Abbie Hoffman and Wavy Gravy, Woodstock '99 had Austin Powers' "Mini-Me" serving as emcee on Saturday. Woodstock '99 was full of odd casting, and it also served as a master class in how to not schedule a festival lineup. Take for instance the East Stage lineup he was introducing on Saturday, where the mellow trifecta of Counting Crows, Alanis Morissette and Dave Matthews Band was slotted right before Limp Bizkit.
9. A Truck Randomly Driving Through the AudienceYup, it happened during Fatboy Slim's set in the festival's rave area under an airplane hangar. As MTV reported, "The set was stopped momentarily after someone accidentally started to drive a truck into the area. After a 10-minute delay, Slim playfully threw on a 45-second snippet of Carl Douglas' 1974 disco hit 'Kung Fu Fighting' before returning to his own dance music."
10. Runaway CopsWho watches the watchmen? Even though the crowd wildly outnumbered the law enforcement presence — roughly 500 New York State Troopers plus local PD — the authorities were supposed to have a little more support courtesy of volunteer security recruited from New York City. However, many of those volunteers unceremoniously walked off the job by wandering off into the audience, leaving the police severely shorthanded when things got out of hand.
11. Crowd-SurfingThere are few more un-self-aware breaches of crowd etiquette worse than crowd-surfing during Alanis Morisette's performance of "Ironic."
12. No VacancyAnyone looking for an escape from the relentless heat and the riots and the overpriced water were shit out of luck: Virtually every hotel room in upstate New York was booked months before Woodstock '99 — but not by festivalgoers. Instead, rooms were filled by attendees of the Baseball Hall of Fame ceremony in nearby Cooperstown, which took place the same weekend. According to one account, a motel in Rome, New York was forced to turn away Alanis Morissette, Howard Stern and George Clinton because there were no vacancies.
13. The Emerging Artist StageWith apologies to Muse and Ben Lee, did any of these artists truly "emerge"? 2 Skinnee J's, 3, American Pearl, Big Sugar, Cyclefly, DDT, Gary Durdin & The Clay Pinps, Mike Errico, F.o.N., Full Devil Jacket, Gargantua Soul, Chris Glenn, Beth Hart Band, Immoral Fibres, Indigenous, Sherri Jackson, Liars Inc., Moe Loughran, Chris McDermott, Old Pike, John Oszajca ,Chris Pérez Band, Bijou Phillips, Pound, Pushmonkey, Johnny Rushmore, Linda Rutherford & Celtic Fire, Serial Joe, Simmi, Sticky Pistil, Stormy Mondays or Sugar Daddy? Despite the lack of big-name talent — besides The Who's John Entwistle, who inexplicably performed a solo set on the Emerging Artists stage despite being only one of two artists at Woodstock '99 to have performed at Woodstock '69 — the Emerging Artists stage was frequently packed, if only because the airport hangar that served as the venue was one of the rare shade providers at the festival.
14. Woodstock.com Goes WildThe official website took a break from peace, love and rock & roll to post photos of topless festivalgoers. Considering how rife the festival was with sexual assaults, it was downright grotesque that the Woodstock site would post photos of females without their consent. Even the captions — "Nice pair" and "Show your tits" to name a few — were tasteless. Women's groups immediately criticized the site's webmaster, and even Woodstock '99 co-promoter John Scher called Woodstock.com's actions "repugnant."
15. OvercrowdingMany problems plagued Woodstock '99, and some severe overcrowding exacerbated them all. In an era before microchips were placed in wristbands, thousands of people flooded the festival site with fake passes in order to avoid paying the fest's then-steep price of $157. (The weekend pass ballooned to $180 the day before Woodstock '99 began.) According to the Syracuse Post-Standard, "Security guards said they were confiscating fake passes at the rate of 50 an hour at just one gate." Although the festival didn't sell out — the amount of tickets sold were capped at 250,000 — it's impossible to know how many festivalgoers snuck in and how that tampered with what organizers planned logistically.

16. Wyclef's Horrible Hendrix ImpersonationPerhaps no one tried to conjure up the spirit of Woodstock '69 as much as Wyclef Jean. Unfortunately, he failed miserably. In addition to performing a "Jailhouse Rock"-like improv about Woodstock, Wyclef also spent much of his 35-minute set doing a really awful Jimi Hendrix impression, from noodling with a guitar behind his head to trying to light that guitar on fire. (Okay, that was a nod to Jimi's famed Monterey gig, not Woodstock, butstill.) However, Wyclef's attempt at recreating Jimi Hendrix's celebrated guitar rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" from Woodstock '69 was an act of desecration almost on par with Rage Against the Machine burning an American flag.
17. Creed Let It Roll, Baby RollOf all the lame musical moments at Woodstock '99, this had to be the low point. Creed, voted by our readers as The Worst Band of the Nineties, played the festival's penultimate set on Sunday night. For no other reason than singer Scott Stapp's obsession with Jim Morrison, Creed brought out the Doors guitarist Robby Krieger for a brutal rendition of "Roadhouse Blues." Maybe it was an attempt to bridge the gap to the 1969 fest — only Krieger and the Doors didn't play at the original Woodstock.
18. Multiple Sexual Assaults"At one point I saw this girl, a very petite girl, maybe 100 pounds, who was body-surfing above the crowd and either fell in or was pulled into a circle in the mosh pit," volunteer David Schneider told MTV. "These gentlemen, probably in the 25–32 age range, looked as though they were holding her down. They were holding her arms; you could see she was struggling." That gang rape occurred during Korn's set. According to reports, even more sexual assaults took place during Limp Bizkit, after Fred Durst infamously incited the crowd with "Break Stuff." A police investigator told the Washington Postthat two men cornered a 24-year-old woman from Pittsburgh in the mosh pit, "assaulting her with their fingers and 'some type of foreign object' before one of them raped her." The police report read: "Due to the congestion of the crowd, she felt that if she yelled for help or fought, she feared she was going to be beaten." The men were never apprehended. While only a handful of sexual assaults relayed to law enforcement, many more went unreported. In the bedlam following Limp Bizkit's set, from the stage, someone — an emcee or organizer — pleaded, "Please, there are people hurt out there. They are your brothers and sisters. They are under the towers. Please, help the medical team get them out of there. We can't continue the show until we get these dear people out of there. We have a really serious situation out there," a stark contrast to "the brown acid that is circulating around us isn't too good" announcement 30 years earlier. Of the 44 people arrested at Woodstock '99, only one was charged with sexual assault.
19. "Fire"This is where Woodstock '99 devolved fully into Lord of the Flies. When the Red Hot Chili Peppers unleashed a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" during their festival-closing set, it was meant as a tribute to the guitar hero's legendary performance at the original 1969 fest. However, following a weekend of extreme heat, overpriced vendors and general bad vibes, "Fire" was the flint that ignited the crowd. We all know what happened next: Bonfires broke out throughout the crowd. Vehicles were flipped and set ablaze. Vendor booths and merch tents were destroyed and used as fuel. Eventually, the New York State Troopers and local law enforcement were able to diffuse the riots, but Griffiss Air Force Base still ended up looking like a bomb hit it.

Rihanna skips the red carpet as ex Chris Brown and her former love rival Karrueche also avoid each other at BET Awards

Rihanna avoided what could have been a very awkward situation on Sunday by skipping the red carpet arrivals at the BET Awards in Los Angeles.
The R&B artist, 27, was seen already in her seat inside the Microsoft Theatre while her ex Chris Brown, 26, posed for photographs outside.
Her decision comes one week after she and rumored new beau Karim Benzema almost came face to face with Brown at Hollywood nightclub Hooray Henry's.

But Brown's most recent ex Karrueche Tran had no qualms about being seen arriving for the big event and happily posed solo for photographers.
Brown and Rihanna famously had an acrimonious break-up in 2009 after Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault following reports he had beaten the singer.
They later rekindled their romance in 2012 but split for good in 2013.
However, it's clear that Rihanna, who, it seems, attended the BET Awards solo, would rather not have to encounter the Loyalty hitmaker. The same could not be said for Karrueche.
The 27-year-old model obviously didn't worry about possibly bumping into her ex even though she recently issued a very public rebuke to Brown who has been trying unsuccessfully to win her back.
Karrueche dumped the recording artists three months ago after it was revealed he'd fathered a child with another woman.

Rihanna and Brown hit the headlines when they first began dating in 2008 but in 2009 their high-profile relationship made news for a very different reason.
An explosive argument between the couple ended with a physical altercation that left the Barbadian beauty hospitalized.
The rapper, then just 19, turned himself in to police and was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats.
He subsequently pleaded guilty to one charge of felony assault in relation the incident and received five years probation.
Following the split, Brown went on to date Karrueche and Rihanna started a romance with baseball star Matt Kemp.
But the former couple reignited their relationship during 2013 before finally splitting for good in 2013.

Brown returned to Karrueche but she dumped him in March when she found out about his baby daughter Loyalty.
Brown has been persistently pursuing the model in recent weeks and trying to win her back, with no success.
Speaking on Ryan Seacrest's radio show earlier in June, the Only singer said he's doing his best to make up for past mistakes and 'be a man about it.'
Despite reports he was actively trying to win the pinup back, he insisted there's no reunion on the cards.
Meanwhile, Rihanna has been spotted in public several times in the past few weeks with Real Madrid soccer star Karim Benzema, 27.
She and the Frenchman have become a fixture at trendy night clubs in both NYC and LA with Rihanna sporting a series of very revealing sexy outfits.

Millionaire BBC boss who kept a secret family around the corner... until the shattering day his wife and mistress met at his hospital bedside

Anthony Fry had his living arrangements fixed up very nicely indeed. As a millionaire financier and distinguished man of influence, he lived with his wife Anne in a splendid £13.5 million five-storey property in London’s Notting Hill.
The house was furnished in the minimalist style, with an abundance of cream marble and an uber-modern kitchen overlooking a fashionably landscaped garden.
The area is popular with bankers who have more money than they know what to do with, and Mr Fry fitted in well.

Anthony Fry's affair with Claire Hoey, left, was uncovered after the banker, left, suffered a large stroke
Not only was he one of the biggest names in the business, with a glittering career with Lehmans Brothers and NM Rothschild, he was also a member of the broadcasting regulatory body, the BBC Trust, and chairman of the footballing Premier League.
His personal life was equally exuberant, with not only a wife but also a mistress to his name.
And while you might expect a man in such a position to prefer to keep the two women in his life as far apart as possible, this was not the case with Anthony Fry.
His mistress, Claire Hoey, an investment banker, lived less than a mile away from the Fry family home in a charming mews house in Holland Park — still within the sought-after W11 postcode.
It must have made rather a pleasant walk, strolling through Notting Hill’s leafy streets to visit Claire. And how convenient, too, for a busy man like Mr Fry.
Not only did he have three grown-up children with his wife, he’d recently become a father again with Claire, who delivered twin daughters on March 15, 2012.But, surprise surprise, the set-up wasn’t quite perfect. Mrs Fry knew nothing whatever about Claire’s existence — let alone the twins. And although Mr Fry had nerves of steel to cope with his mistress living so close by, it must have worried him, from time-to-time, that this situation was a ticking timebomb which would surely explode at some point.
But even he could not have imagined that when his web of deceit finally untangled, it would do so in quite such dramatic circumstances.
On March 4 last year, Anthony Fry suffered a severe stroke. It is thought that he collapsed shortly after leaving his office and was rushed to hospital.
It is not known how long Mr Fry spent in hospital but during those critical first few days after the stroke, both women visited him — and the inevitable happened.
One day, Mrs Fry turned up at visiting hours to be told by a perplexed member of staff that his wife was already with him.
The ‘wife’ in question was Claire — who at 34 is 23 years younger than 57-year-old Anne Fry, the real wife.
The millionaire was recovering in hospital when his wife turned up, while his mistress was sitting at his bedside
The millionaire was recovering in hospital when his wife turned up, while his mistress was sitting at his bedside
There was an awful moment of clarity for poor Mrs Fry; a dawning of the truth. Her husband confessed all — but given that he’d been cornered in his hospital bed, what else could he do?
Not surprisingly, after this shattering bedside revelation, Mrs Fry promptly severed all ties with her husband.
Today, Anthony Fry and Claire are now officially together — though the circumstances in which this came about are probably not what Claire would have hoped for.
Last weekend, a Sunday newspaper exposed Mr Fry’s secret — the day after he celebrated his 60th birthday on holiday. Claire is believed to have accompanied him on the trip.
His exposure will be a devastating embarrassment to him, given his high-profile, public role.
Although urbane and cultured, friends say he did not appear to be a ladies’ man — and his straight-talking approach to business gave the impression that he was a straightforward man in his private life also.
Certainly, there are few clues in his upbringing. The son of a company secretary, Anthony Fry was born in Worthing, West Sussex. He was a bright child and went on to study History at Oxford.
At Oxford in the 1970s, he was a contemporary of Benazir Bhutto, the future Prime Minister of Pakistan, who was assassinated in 2007, and they were often to be seen out together in her yellow sports car. In later years, he was to advise her on privatisation in Pakistan.
Mr Fry is believed to have married Anne Birrell, who is originally from Scotland, in the late Eighties and they went on to have three children — Sophie, who is now 24, Edward, 22, and Hugo, 18.
Until Anthony Fry, right, suffered his stroke on March 4, 2014, his wife was oblivious to his secret family
Until Anthony Fry, right, suffered his stroke on March 4, 2014, his wife was oblivious to his secret family
He joined Rothschild in the early Eighties, where he was regarded as one of the bank’s biggest star players. From 2004 to 2007, he worked for Lehman Brothers.
‘I am an old-fashioned corporate finance adviser to big companies,’ Mr Fry once said.
Money was no object. As well as the house in Elgin Crescent, Notting Hill, the Frys also had a 17th century farmhouse, also furnished in the minimalist style, in Oxfordshire. The late singer Amy Winehouse once sang at a family birthday party there.
In 2008, Mr Fry became a member of the BBC Trust, the Corporation’s regulatory body, receiving a salary of £35,230 a year for a two-day-a-week commitment.
By this time, he had probably already met his future mistress.
Miss Hoey, an insurance broker’s daughter, was born and brought up in Essex. After graduating from Durham University, she went into investment banking.
She worked at Lehmans between 2003 and 2008, and it is likely that this is where she and Anthony Fry met.
The fact that Mr Fry was married was one complication. But in fact Claire was married, too. In 2007, she wed 39-year-old Trinidadian Ricardo Garcia, with whom she was already living in Twickenham, South-West London. Two years later, Mr Garcia set up a wine shop in Twickenham, close to the rugby stadium.
It isn’t clear precisely when the affair began between Claire and Tony — as his friends know him — but by mid-2011 she was pregnant with the twin girls.
This week, Mr Garcia would say only: ‘I am not in contact with her any more.’
Around this time, Claire moved into the mews house in Holland Park, which was rented.
The twins arrived, a minute apart, on March 15, 2012, at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in West London.
Heaven knows how, but over the next few months Mr Fry managed to juggle life with his two families at the house in Notting Hill and Claire’s mews house in Holland Park.
Around the time that the twins were born, Claire set up her own investment consultancy company, Vita Nel Lusso (Life in Luxury). Her lover, Mr Fry was appointed ‘senior advisor’ — a role he failed to mention on his personal website.
The year the twins were born, there was controversy at the BBC after it was discovered that some of its most highly-paid names — including Jeremy Paxman — had been using a potential ‘tax dodge’ by being employed as freelancers and paid through their own private companies.
Mr Fry said at the time: ‘If someone clearly has the characteristics of being an employee, there will not be exceptions because someone is a big talent.’
He disapproved of the practice, it would seem.
Yet the Mail has discovered that Mr Fry himself is an investor in a company, Invicta Film Partnership, which is under investigation by HM Revenue & Customs — concerning tax avoidance.

In May 2013, when the twins were 14 months old, Mr Fry was appointed Chairman of the Premier League. The news was greeted with widespread surprise. No one knew the opera-loving Mr Fry had a passion for football.
At the time he was described as a Manchester United supporter, so it was embarrassing when it emerged a month later that he had three season tickets at Chelsea FC.
After winning this prestigious post, for which he reportedly received a salary of around £200,000 a year for devoting half his working week to the role, Mr Fry resigned from his position with the BBC Trust.
The Premier League appointment inevitably raised Mr Fry’s profile, and rumours began to circulate that he had an unusual domestic set-up.
That same year, the Frys put their country property in Oxfordshire on the market.
Then, at the end of the year, Claire made a reference in a blog she was sporadically writing of having moved into a new house.
Was the Oxfordshire house put on the market, as was rumoured, to free up money to help Fry with the upkeep of his mistress and twins? Meanwhile, it seems Claire was tiring of being the mistress.
In January 2014, she wrote in her blog about a falling out she’d had with her PA, which had resulted in the woman’s employment being terminated.
Among the many complaints she had against this lady was her lack of attention to detail and the mis-spelling of names in her ‘contacts’ database.
‘I have the Chairman of the Premier League listed as Chairman of the “Primier League” she wrote.’
Was this oblique reference to Fry an unconscious expression of her unhappiness with the secret nature of their relationship?
Ms Hoey gave birth to the couple's twin girls at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on March 15, 2012
Ms Hoey gave birth to the couple's twin girls at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on March 15, 2012
The following month, Miss Hoey wrote a piece on her blog about relationships — and how people stay in relationships out of habit when the relationship has long ago died.
‘The dictionary definition of “habit” is a recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behaviour that is acquired through frequent repetition or an “established disposition of the mind or character”.
‘Many people remain in both jobs and relationships that are well past their sell-by date in terms of what suits them best. Often, in both instances, there are extenuating factors which prevent them from moving on — whether that be financial concerns in relation to a job, or the impact on children or finances where a relationship or marriage is concerned.
‘Beyond these fundamental concerns, many of us spend a significant proportion of our lives trying to pretend that we are happy with our lot or burying our true feelings about our lives beneath the surface, which in themselves become habitual behaviour.’
You don’t need to be a marriage guidance counsellor to get what she’s driving at.
There was another cloud on Mr Fry’s horizon, too. Rumours were circulating in the sporting world that a newspaper had got hold of the story of his double life and was about to run it.
But then there was a further twist to the tale, with Mr Fry’s sudden collapse on March 4 last year.
How soon after he was taken to hospital that the fateful visit of both wife and mistress took place is not clear.
But it is believed Miss Hoey had taken the twins with her to see their father when Mrs Fry also decided to pay a visit.
‘It seems the hospital staff thought Claire was Tony’s wife,’ says a source. ‘And so when another wife turned up, it was all very awkward.
‘Anne later confronted him about it and he admitted that he’d been having an affair with Claire and had fathered twins with her.
‘Anne had no idea.’
Stunned at the deception, Mrs Fry left her husband almost straight away. The Notting Hill house was put up for sale and last September it was sold for £13.5 million.
The Oxfordshire property was sold the same month, for £4.7m.
Not long afterwards, she began divorce proceedings.
Mr Fry, meanwhile, remained very ill. On the advice of his doctors, he resigned as Chairman of the Premier League in June last year, three months after suffering the stroke.
Over the past few months his condition has slowly improved and he is now mobile again, although it is believed he uses a stick to help him get about.
Then, last weekend, his relationship with Claire Hoey was revealed.
Mr Fry remains the chairman of CALA, a Scottish house builder, although he remains ‘off work’. He is also a non-executive director of Control Risks, the global risk assessment company.
Miss Hoey’s company, Vita Nel Lusso, remains in operation.
Mr Fry’s divorce proceedings are thought to be still ongoing.
Once it is settled, and Mrs Fry has received her financial settlement, her former husband and his one-time secret mistress may find that their ‘life in luxury’ isn’t quite so lavish as it once was.
