A pensioner mowing her lawn at 11pm was shot dead by an angry neighbour, police said.
Linda Ciotto, 62, was found outside her Kirkwood Drive home just after 11 pm with a gunshot wound to the head, officers claimed.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police and residents in Willard, Ohio, were shocked by the killing.
Investigators said the woman was killed by her next door neighbour because she was mowing her lawn too late at night.
After quizzing others, it was determined deputies should contact 50-year-old James Blair, who was next door.
But it appears that fearing a police visit he had barricaded himself in his home.
A stand-off ensured for five hours until police ran out of patience and fired tear gas into the house he shares with his elderly mother.
Blair was arrested along with his mum.
Blair is now being held in the Huron County Jail on a $1 million bond and is due to appear in court on 4 August.
His mother Billie Hinkle, 72 was also arrested and has been charged with tampering with evidence because deputies alleged she hid the gun used in the shooting.
