Ice Cube: 'I Respect Rappers More When They Write Their Own Lyrics'

While most fans and commentators agree that Drake handily won his feud withMeek Mill, one question still lingers -- can Drake be considered a candidate for Greatest of All Time given that he doesn't necessarily write all his own raps?

Who better to answer than question than one of hip-hop's first GOAT rappers? In a recent chat with MTV, Ice Cube -- who writes his own rhymes and has written lyrics for others, including the late Eazy-E -- gave his take on the subject.

"I'm not a fan of it,” the former N.W.A rapper admitted. “I respect rappers more when they write their own lyrics. As far as making a song, anybody can put a song together. It don’t matter how it come together. All that matters is what’s coming out the speaker. So, as far as making music and making records, it don’t matter who write it. As far as emceeing and being a rapper, you should write your own stuff."

Cube's comments mirror what Drake producer Noah "40" Shebib said in his defense of Drizzy, although with a separate bend. According to Shebib, the end result is all that musically matters -- which the hip-hop legend agrees with. But when it comes to respecting someone as an MC, Cube believes that spitting your own words does matter -- at least if you want his seal of approval.
