It isn’t Detox, but my my, what have we here
For over a decade, Dr. Dre has been teasing the release of an album called Detox, an LP pushed back so many times and anticipated so hotly, the word “detox” has become synonymous with almost mythical occurrences or occasions procrastinated on for so long
, the odds of them happening are slim to none. From Jay Z to Akon, high-profile rappers and pop artists over the years have been linked to Dr. Dre’s follow-up to to the multi-platinum2001, but an actual album hasn’t materialized.
That is, until now.
On Dre’s The Pharmacy show on Apple Music’s Beats Radio 1 Saturday evening, the richest man in Hip Hop admitted that he’d scrapped Detox in favor of a fresher album, one inspired by the energy he’s been surrounded with during the filming and promoting ofStraight Outta Compton, the F. Gary Gray-directed N.W.A. biopic film hitting theaters in a fortnight. Compton: The Soundtrack, releasing on Friday. Dre was clear, this isn’t the soundtrack to the movie, but rather, the soundtrack to the city, that he’s crafted with some very important colleagues in mind, including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and more. The exact caliber of collaborators most were looking forward to seeing on Detox.
Last week, Ice Cube hinted at the release during an interview on Power 99, but was wrong about the release date, initially thought to be this past Friday. The album will be officially released this Friday, exclusively on Apple Music, and you can check out the artwork above and the tracklist below.
