The incredible life and career of Warren Buffett, the billionaire every investor looks to for inspiration
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway will host its annual meeting on Saturday.
The event draws huge interest in the financial world and is sometimes called "Woodstock for Capitalists" or "Buffettpalooza." Business Insider will cover it, and you can check back on Saturday for a blow-by-blow of the day.
Buffett and Vice Chairman Charlie Munger will answer five hours of questions. Typically, the crowd pays closer attention to Buffett's words of investing wisdom rather than Berkshire Hathaway's operations.
That's no surprise considering Buffett's vast wealth and lifetime of accomplishments.
Following are interesting things we've gleaned from the billionaire's eventful, 86-year-long life.
Tied up in the bush, body pierced with nails and beaten to confess - Two children branded witches in Cross River narrates their shocking ordeal
Two sisters, Aniema, 10 and 13-year-old Mary, who were accused of witchcraft have narrated their ordeal and their near death experience in the hands of their uncles in Akpabuyo Local Government of Cross River State.
The children were branded witches after their stepsister, one Adiaha Akpan said she had a dream where Mary and Aniema came to take her child away and wanted to kill her.
The CrossRiverWatch tracked the children to Asanting village in Ikono local government area of Akwa Ibom State, where their father relocated them after their near death experience in the hands of persons they referred to as “Uncles”.
"That faithful day I was taken to Church and accused of being a witch. Uncle Victor asked that I confess that I am a witch or else when we get back to the house he will beat me up and use nails to pierce my body, but I told him that I was not a witch". Mary narrates.
She further stated that, "The next day Adiaha Akpan (who is their step sister) said she had a dream where I and Aniema my sister came to take her child away and that I wanted to kill her. She told Uncle Victor about the dream and he came and took us to the bush and started flogging us”.
Aniema added that, “When they went away I managed to untie myself and ran away but a broken bottle pierced my feet but I kept on running. The uncle caught up with me and continued with the flogging using big sticks and I was crying. They took me from one house to the other and some people joined them to flog me.”
Groom, 28, attacked his new wife, 29, on their wedding night before repeatedly raping her because he wanted to be a father
A bride has revealed how her ex-husband attacked her on her wedding night before subjecting her to routine rapes when he decided he wanted to a child.
Charlotte Walford, from Northampton, thought her husband Spencer Walford was the man of her dreams. But, hours after exchanging vows, the violent 28-year-old began subjecting her to brutal attacks.
The campaign of abuse, which started at the couple's wedding reception, continued for months until she finally reported the abuse to police.
Surreal photos of China's failed 'city of the future'
Ordos, China, once flush with cash, has been called the world's largest ghost town.
In the early 2000s, a coal-mining boom led the local government to throw money at urban development in the hopes of creating a new epicenter of culture, economy, and politics.
Ordos New Town, also known as Kangbashi, would hold 1 million people and be known for its massive abstract architecture projects, residential towers, and state-of-the-art sports venues. (Developers later scaled back the concept city to accommodate 300,000 people.)
But high property taxes and poor construction deterred people from settling in Ordos. In 2016, some 100,000 people lived and worked there — leaving the city two-thirds empty.
"The whole city feels like a post-apocalyptic space station straight out of a science fiction movie," says the photographer Raphael Olivier, who captured the city in a series titled "Ordos — A Failed Utopia."
