Liverpool double murder: Peter Fox spotted on train station CCTV as police hunt him over brutal killings

Detectives have warned the public not to approach Peter Fox after his mum Bernadette was murdered yesterday along with her daughter Sarah Fox

A man being hunted by police in connection with the double murder of his mother and sister is thought to be in London - as police released new CCTV images of him at one of the capital's main train stations

Peter Fox, 26, was pictured at Euston station, and at Lime Street station in his native Liverpool, on Wednesday night.

Detectives have released the stills as they urgently try to track him down following the brutal murders of Bernadette Fox, 57 and her daughter Sarah, 27.

Their bodies were found at separate addresses in Bootle, Merseyside, on Friday. Bernadette had died from asphyxiation and Sarah had been stabbed.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Rooney, of Merseyside Police, said: "We are still trying to trace Peter Fox, the 26-year-old son of Bernadette, as he could have information which could assist with our investigation.

"I am re-appealing to Peter to come forward so that we can speak to him following the murders of his mother and sister.

"We know that Peter travelled by train to London on Wednesday night and we are working with the Metropolitan Police to try and find him.

"Although we know he travelled to London that night he may well have gone on to travel outside of the London area.

"I would stress to the public that if they do see Peter Fox, they should not approach him. We would urge anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact the police on 999.

"Peter's family have been left devastated by the deaths of Bernadette and Sarah and they would also urge Peter to come forward to help the detectives investigating these murders."

Peter Fox is white, between 5ft 2 and 5ft 5, slightly built, with short dark hair and brown eyes. He speaks with a Liverpool accent.

Anyone who does see him they should call 999 or report the sighting to their nearest police station.

Neighbours of the dead pair spoken to by the Liverpool Echo earlier spoke of their shock after police were called to the two addresses on Friday.

One neighbour said: “I saw one of my neighbours in the street who said he was worried after he noticed the dog from the flat roaming the streets, he had seen it a few times so he knocked on the door but got no answer.

“He called to the house last night and noticed there was a downstairs window open and the back door was ajar.

“He called the police at around 9, and got a call at 2am this morning from the Police saying they needed to speak to him.

“It’s so shocking.

"I’ve spoken to the girl from those flats before two or three times, she seemed a nice girl.

“It’s not exactly a leafy suburb but this sort of thing is such a shock”

Another resident said: “In all 75 years I’ve lived here nothing like this has ever happened. Awful. It’s a nice road.”

A neighbour on Brookhill Road, where the second body was found, told the ECHO: “It’s bad enough there being one murder, but two? It’s awful.

"We always see people of the residential home coming in and out.

“I didn’t know her personally but I stopped to say hello in the street.

Management at the residential home on Brookhill Road declined to comment.

The brutal death of Emmanuel Sithole

Shortly before 7am yesterday, Sunday Times journalists were in Alexandra township, near Sandton, speaking to shop owners who had their businesses looted overnight. Children played, people walked the streets, some stopped to gawk at the carnage from the night before. Then this happened ...

In a gutter in Alexandra a Mozambican man stopped and lay down. The gash to his chest meant he could go no further.

At the day clinic less than 100m away they could not help him. The doctor scheduled to be on duty did not show up because he was a foreigner and feared being a victim of xenophobia.

It began on Friday night when mobs blockaded Arkwright Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in Alexandra, with rubble and burning tyres. Foreign-owned shops' roofs were ripped open and metal gates torn away as looters went on the rampage.

Outside one spaza shop, a man in a black corduroy jacket and red shirt was walking along the road.

Suddenly a young man dressed in a grey tracksuit jacket beat him over the head with a wrench. The red-shirt man tried to fend off the blows, his arms raised. He stumbled back, falling into rubbish strewn by the roadside. The blows with the wrench rained down. Then the bludgeoning stopped and the man with the wrench moved away.

"Are we safe here?" asked a South African woman watching the attack.

The man in the red shirt got up. Now another man with a beige spottie approached, holding an okapi knife high above his head. Again, the man in the red shirt raised his hands, pleading for mercy. But his pleas were in vain. He was stabbed ... again and again.

 

The two grappled and fell to the floor. The man with the wrench returned. Finally, a lanky young man sprinted towards the man among the rubbish, kicking him in the head. The young man pulled a butcher's knife. A man in a black leather jacket who had discouraged the attack grabbed the wrist with the butcher's knife. The attackers fled.

The red-shirt man tried to get up but fell. Finally he made it to his feet. Feebly, he walked up the road.

Do you know why they attacked you? Who are you? Where are you from, we asked him.

He turned his head towards the questions fired at him, his face pleading. He said nothing. His shirt was drenched, a 2cm gash in his chest.

Metres further he stumbled and lay down in the gutter. He struggled to sit up and fell down.

 

"Help me get him into the car. Help me, please," said photographer James Oatway, looking around at the men gathered around him. One stepped forward, reluctantly.

Up the road, at Alexandra Day Clinic, nurses did what they could. There was no doctor; he would have to be taken to Edenvale Hospital.

Along the way the man was flailing wildly, sitting up, lying down, wincing with pain. The wound to his chest was gushing now.

At Edenvale Hospital a lone gurney stood at the entrance. The porters sat in a room with tinted windows. Oatway pleaded for help. The man in the car was critical, he said.

Slowly one porter rose and scribbled in a book. Then the other, both now ambling towards the hospital entrance. Inside the car the red-shirt man looked lifeless.

"He's dead. We can't take him," one porter pronounced.

There was no pulse. Then a gag reflex. He's alive.

Inside the ICU, doctors compressed his chest, massaging his heart. After nearly seven minutes a ventilator was used. Shortly after 9am Emmanuel Sithole was pronounced dead. He was Mozambican. The stab wound to his chest had penetrated his heart.

In his pockets, R285 and 10c in change and a cellphone. His phone would ensure he did not die nameless.

On his wrist, three armbands read: "United for Bafana."

Davido & His Driver Beat Up MC Galaxy, Sent Him Out Of Shizzi’s Studio

Sekem crooner MC Galaxy was attacked and badly injured on Wednesday night April 15th at producer Shizzi’s studio in Lekki. According to a reliable industry source, MC Galaxy, Davido (they have collaborated before) B-Red, Shizzi, Davido’s driver, a guy named Lati and other HKN members were at Shizzi’s studio working and laughing when suddenly things turned ugly.

According to someone who witnessed the beat down, trouble started after MC Galaxy told B-Red that he (Galaxy) was more popular than him (B-Red).

B-Red didn’t agree and they went back and forth. Then an HKN Gang member, who is a Ghanaian artist, told MC Galaxy that he was not funny as a comedian. MC Galaxy replied, telling him that he was an unknown artist, and they went back and forth yabbing each other. They said all of a sudden Davido came out from the studio and asked MC Galaxy to leave.

“Davido didn’t like that Galaxy was yabbing his boys and asked him to leave. Before Galaxy could react, Davido hit him on the back. Then his driver, Lati, took over, punching Galaxy and then hit him on the head with an Orijin bottle.

B-Red didn’t touch Galaxy and Shizzi was very upset about what was happening in his studio and tried to stop the fight.

I contacted MC Galaxy to confirm he was attacked and he confirmed it but didn’t want to talk much about the incident.

“Yes, I was attacked by Davido, his driver also broke a bottle on my head. Davido is someone I love and I am surprised he did this.

His manager Kamal has called to apologize to me but I would rather not have this in the public.” he said

Scientists have figured out how dogs make us fall in love with them

When people call their dogs their "fur babies," they may be onto something, at least on a chemical level.

Dogs that make so-called puppy eyes at their owners get a spike in the "love hormone" oxytocin — and their owners do too, according to a new study. This same positive feedback in oxytocin release occurs when a mom gazes at her newborn infant, studies have shown.

Because dogs don't otherwise use eye contact as a way to cement bonds with other dogs, the study researchers suggest that man's best friend may have gotten its prized place in human hearts by tapping into an ancient human bonding pathway.

"We humans use eye gaze for affiliative communications, and are very much sensitive to eye contact," study co-author Takefumi Kikusui, a professor of veterinary medicine at the Companion Animal Research Lab at Azabu University in Japan, said in an email.

"Therefore, the dogs who can use eye gaze to the owner efficiently would have more benefits from humans." 

Loving feeling

Oxytocin, often called the "love hormone," performs various actions in humans, such as triggering the onset of labor, reducing stress and helping group members recognize individual members.

But in all mammals, one of its key roles is to help a parent and infant bond. For instance, when rodent pups are separated from their moms, they emit a series of ultrasonic noises that spur moms to release more oxytocin and to scoop up their pups and behave in a more nurturing way. This, in turn, leads to the release of more oxytocin and, as a result, more attachment behavior in pups.

In humans, both moms and babies get a spike in oxytocin during breast-feeding, and they will spend hours gazing at each other, each fueling the release of oxytocin in the other, various studies have suggested.

For domesticated dogs and wolves, however, eye contact isn't normally a bonding behavior. Rather, dominant dogs stare down canines lower in the group's hierarchy, and pups that are nervous will look away, said Evan MacLean, an evolutionary anthropologist at Duke University who was not involved in the new study.

Kikusui and his colleagues wondered exactly what dogs are getting out of their affectionate gazing at humans. In the new study, which is detailed today (April 16) in the journal Science, the team measured the oxytocin levels of dogs and their owners before and after the pairs spent 30 minutes together.

After the owners spent quality time gazing into their dogs' eyes, petting and talking to the furballs, both the people and dogs showed increases in the levels of oxytocin in their urine. What's more, the more oxytocin rose in humans, the more it did in dogs as well.

In similar experiments with wolves, the researchers found no such interspecies-oxytocin loop — even though the wolves were interacting with people who had raised them from pups.

In a second experiment, the researchers spritzed an oxytocin nasal spray into dogs' nostrils and found that female dogs stared longer at their owners afterward, and that both the pups and the humans showed a rise in oxytocin as a result.

The findings suggest that the oxytocin feedback loop can cross species boundaries, at least between man and his best friend. 

"This tells us something about our relationships with dogs," MacLean, who wrote a Perspectives article in the same issue of Science, told Live Science. "In many ways, they're similar to our relationships with people."

Partners in evolutionary change

The findings may help explain one of the most puzzling stories in human history: how a predatory, fearsome wolf transformed into man's best friend. Kikusui speculated that, at some point early in the domestication of dogs, a small group of naturally more friendly dogs may have gazed at their human counterparts for bonding. In doing so, the dogs unwittingly tapped into the natural human system designed for parent-child bonding.

Humans and dogs may have co-evolved this ability in order for love to flourish across species, Kikusui speculated. In follow-up research, they hope to identify the genes involved, in both humans and dogs.

MacLean, however, doesn't think humans necessarily needed to undergo genetic changes to get an oxytocin boost when they lock eyes with their canine companions.

"Originally, this kind of bonding mechanism was very important between mother and infant, and then we've probably already recycled those same mechanisms in our relationships with other individuals," MacLean said. Therefore, the human ability to bond via eye contact is already very flexible and easily repurposed, he added.
