Fire guts TheNews office, UNILAG medical hostel

The headquarters of the weekly magazine, TheNews, located at Acme Road, Lagos, was yesterday evening gutted by fire. The fire reportedly affected the last floor of the two-storey building.
Sources say the fire, which started around 6:30pm, was caused by a power surge.
No one was injured in the fire but valuable property was destroyed in the unfortunate incident.
A source said, “The fire was very ferocious. I think the fire was caused by power surge. When the power supply was restored, the voltage was high and some employees did not switch off their systems.”
Also on Wednesday, the male hostel of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Idi Araba, was gutted by fire.
It was learnt that the fire started from room 648 and spread to room 647 on the third floor of Block 6 Alliakilu Hostel.
One of the occupants of room 648 told one of our correspondents that they were not able to salvage any of their property.
The student who declined to be named said, “Around 10am, I was playing basketball when I saw students running all over the place. When I got to the hostel, I noticed that it was my room that was on fire.
“We tried to put out the fire but it was so intense that it soon spread to the next room. The fire was raging because we couldn’t get a fire extinguisher which was in the hostel manager’s room.
“Also, there’s no water on the third floor so students had to go downstairs to get water which we used in fighting the fire.”
Another student attributed the fire incident to a power surge.
According to the student: “There were electric sparks in the room in April while we were attempting to install a ceiling fan. Some wires got burnt in the process. A few months later, a socket in the room sparked and it caused a blackout on the entire floor.
“After that incident, engineers came to repair it but since then, no permanent solution has been found. The engineers demanded money for the repair from us and after giving them, they didn’t solve the problem.”
The college public relations officer, Sunday Odejimi confirmed the incident but blamed the students for not reporting any act of extortion to the relevant authorities to be properly addressed.
He reportedly said, “Everybody knows the power situation in the country. If they had problem, why didn’t they report to the appropriate authorities?
“If they were being extorted as claimed, they should have reported to the students union which would have relayed the problem to the authorities.”

3 Crushed To Death In Lagos As Container Falls

Three persons were yesterday crushed to death when a 40-feet containerized vehicle fell on a Mazda car on the Badagry-Seme Expressway.
The accident which occurred at about 1.15 p.m., was attributed to the bad road which has been a nightmare to commuters and other users of the road.
The containerized vehicle with registration number XT 339 AKD was said to be conveying some goods when it lost control and fell on the car, with four occupants. Three of the passengers died instantly, while the driver was in a critical condition.
The accident caused a heavy traffic while passers-by went on an immediate rescue mission of the trapped persons, before officials of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, came to the scene of the accident.
Three of the passengers pulled out from the crushed car had already died. The driver of the truck, reports say fled immediately the accident occurred.
According to eyewitnesses, the bad portion of the road has been left because of the on-going reconstruction and that the danger has been there all along.
“For the fact that the road is no longer manageable, road users often drive against traffic to avoid container carrying trucks; now it has claimed lives,” exclaimed a regular road user.
The accident attracted a lot of condemnations of the government towards its people, with an eye-witness saying; “This is an indication that we are all driving on a time bomb. It could be I or you tomorrow”
As at the time LASTMA officials arrived the scene of the accident with a towing van in order to lift the container off the compressed car, a large number good spirited Nigerians, who swung into action almost immediately the accident occurred, had already evacuated the passengers on board the car with registration number UK 641 KJA.

Another Nigerian Man Caught With $320,000 At International Airport

Another Nigerian has been arrested with $320,000 cash at the Murtala Muhammed Airport.
The man, Onwuekwe Chidi was about to board a Qatar plane to Doha, when he was arrested.
Mr Epowei Charles, the Area Comptroller, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMI) Customs Command, said though Chidi declared the money, he could not explain the source of the currency or show adequate proof of his business to customs officials.

“The passenger and the money had been handed over to officials of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for further investigations,” Charles said.
In the last 3 months, the Customs and the EFCC have seized close to $11million from Nigerian travellers, especially to Dubai and Doha.
Just last week, Akinyele Adetula, a staff of FAAN, on whom was found $1.4million forfeited a quarter of the money to the Federal Government after trial in Lagos.
The trophy for the biggest cash smuggling belongs to Abubakar Sheriff Tijjani. The lanky dollar courier had $7,049.444, in his possession when he was arrested 27 September, 2012. He forfeited only a quarter of the undeclared $2.5million.
Analysts said the huge forex cash Nigerians are taking to other climes, suggest a heavy flight of much needed capital that can be deployed to better productive uses.

Singapore cabbie returns $900,000 to Thai couple

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean taxi driver has been heralded as a hero after he returned Sg$1.1 million ($900,000) in cash to a vacationing Thai couple who left the money in his cab.

Sia Ka Tian, 70, was shocked to find the money in a black paper bag on the back seat on Monday after he dropped the couple off at a shopping centre.

"When I saw the money, I thought, trouble is here. I was sure there was at least $200,000 in the bag," the Straits Times quoted the 31-year veteran in the taxi business as saying.

But when he brought the money to transport company ComfortDelGro's lost-and-found office, his stunned colleagues counted Sg$1.1 million in thousand-dollar bills.

"The money is unimportant to me. It doesn't belong to me, so how can I use it?" he told the newspaper.

The Thai couple reported the loss to the transport company and Sia was waiting for them when they arrived to claim the money.

The report did not say what the couple were doing with such a large sum.

The driver received an undisclosed cash reward from the grateful couple, whose names have been withheld, and the company also plans to give him an award for good service.

"Finding one million dollars in cash is not an everyday affair and in fact, we wonder how many people would have possibly been tempted" to pocket it, company spokeswoman Tammy Tan said.

"We are immensely proud of him and are glad that the passengers recovered their money."

It was the most valuable item returned by a cabbie working for the company. In 2009, another taxi driver returned five kilograms (11 pounds) of gold bars worth Sg$377,000.

Man, 62, Arraigned For Defiling Step Daughter In Ogun State

The police in Ogun on Monday arraigned a 62-year-old man, Alabi Ibrahim, before a Magistrate court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, for allegedly defiling his 10-year-old step daughter.
The suspect was arraigned in Court 4 before Magistrate M.O Olayinka in a case with charge number MA/918c/2012 brought against him by the Ogun State Commissioner of Police.
The suspect had earlier evaded arrest when police attempted to interrogate him and allegedly took refuge in the home of a top politician in the town.
He was however later arrested, interrogated and subsequently charged to court.
A Non-Governmental Organisation, Child Protection Network, had reported the alleged crime against the 10-year-old girl to the police.
During interrogation, the victim was said to have told the police that the suspect had had sex with her on several occasions.
“Daddy always come when Mummy is not around, and always tell me not to tell anybody or else I would die,” she told police.
The 10-year-old victim was in court in company with her mother during the arraignment of the suspect where the one count of having unlawful carnal knowledge of the girl was read to the suspect.
“That you Alabi Ibrahim, ‘m’, on or before September 2012, at Rounder, Soyoye area, Abeokuta in the Abeokuta Magisterial District, did have unlawful canal knowledge of Oluwadamilola Ayoola ‘f’ 10 years,” the charge read.
The suspect was said to have committed the offence “contrary to and punishable under section 218 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.”
Olayinka, however, remanded the suspect in prison and adjourned hearing of the case to November 29, 2012.

A 34-year-old man died while receiving treatment from a local traditional healer after his manhood allegedly remained up after sleeping with a married woman.

The man has been identified as Shelton Dinganga of Zaranyika Road, Mambo.
According to neighbours, the matter which had been kept as a family secret by the man’s relatives occurred last week. The neighbours said they were shocked when they were only informed about Dinganga’s death and not his illness. They said Dinganga had sex with a relative’s wife and his sexual organ remained erect while his other private parts became swollen.
“Dinganga had suddenly disappeared from public life after coming back from Kwekwe where he had visited one of the family relatives whom he was said to be flirting with. We were shocked when his family members later informed us of his death and burial arrangements on Tuesday morning,” a neighbour told the local press.
The neighbour said it was during Dinganga’s burial at Mkoba Cemetery on Wednesday last week when mourners later got the shocking news that he died when his sexual organ remained erect after having sex with a female relative in Kwekwe.
When our news crew visited the house yesterday, Dinganga’s aunt, Ms Janet Gama confirmed the death.
She, however, refused to shed light on the causes of his death.
“Why do you want to know what caused the death of our relative? Yes he died at home and he had declined to be taken to the hospital but to then narrate the whole issue about Dinganga’s illness and subsequent passing away will not bring his life back,” said Ms Gama.

17-Year-Old Boy Tied Girlfriend To A Tree, Then Molests And Stabbed Her To Death

A teenager has admitted murdering his girlfriend in a brutal attack described to a court as ‘torture’.
College student Hannah Windsor, 17, was tied to a tree, sexually assaulted, strangled and attacked with a knife by Adam Lewis, 18, Liverpool Crown Court heard today.
Lewis, of Wirral, Merseyside, had denied murdering Miss Windsor but changed his plea to guilty shortly before his trial was due to begin.
He also admitted two counts of sexual assault against his victim.
The partially clothed body of Miss Windsor, who was living at a hostel for homeless young people at the time of her death, was found hidden under leaves, twigs and dirt in woodland on Bidston Hill, Wirral, on May 19 this year.
Neil Flewitt QC, prosecuting, described Miss Windsor’s injuries as ‘highly distressing’.
She was restrained and tied to a tree, sexually assaulted, stabbed repeatedly and suffered multiple other knife wounds to her chest, abdomen and back, he said.
Her mouth had been covered with surgical tape and she was strangled with a combination of his hands and a ligature, Mr Flewitt added.
There were also severe wounds in her genital area and evidence of sexual assaults.
‘The nature and extent of the injuries were such that the pathologist concluded Hannah had been the victim of torture,’ Mr Flewitt told the court.
‘In the pathologist’s opinion, some of the wounds have a sexual component.
‘Some of the injuries were caused after death but some were definitely caused during life. ‘It is entirely possible that at some stage during the process, Hannah died and the defendant did not realise she had died and continued to inflict the injuries.’
Members of Miss Windsor’s family, who were sitting in the public gallery, became upset as her injuries were described to the court.
Miss Windsor and Lewis, who were both diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), had met when they were pupils at a Wirral special school.
After leaving school they had been in a relationship for seven months before splitting up and reuniting about six weeks before he killed her, the court heard.
In the days leading up to Miss Windsor’s death Lewis had been hiding from police after a burglary during which he started a fire.
He was sleeping in a tent which he pitched in a woodland clearing on Bidston Hill, a beauty spot on the outskirts of Birkenhead. Police became aware that Miss Windsor knew where Lewis was hiding and warned her not to go and see him, Mr Flewitt said.
‘Tragically, it seems Hannah was determined to ignore the advice she had been given by police and was intending to visit the defendant at his campsite,’ he added.
Miss Windsor was carrying a note from a detective which contained a phone number for her local police station.
The note was later found torn up at Lewis’s campsite, Mr Flewitt said.
‘It may be that the presence of this torn note around the campsite indicated to the defendant that she had been speaking to police and may in part explain why he attacked and killed her,’ the barrister told the court.
Two days after Miss Windsor disappeared Lewis was found by police sleeping rough at a railway station. A search of the police national computer revealed he was wanted for burglary and arson and he was arrested before being released on bail.
While on bail he told his sister he had killed Miss Windsor and his grandfather contacted police.
Lewis was re-arrested and taken to Bidston Hill where he directed police to an area near where Miss Windsor’s body was found.
Lewis’s previous convictions date from the age of 10 when he committed an offence of dishonesty. Other offences included an assault committed when he was 13, the court was told.
He earlier pleaded guilty to the burglary he committed before he killed Miss Windsor. This will be his third burglary conviction and will result in a mandatory three-year jail term, Mr Flewitt said.
The barrister acknowledged that the burglary sentence will ‘pale in comparison’ to the life sentence he will receive for the murder.
In mitigation, Stephen Riordan QC, defending, said Lewis confessed to the murder last Friday during a meeting with his solicitor.
He maintains he suffered a blackout and cannot recall much of what happened.
Mr Riordan said: ‘The time may come, and one hopes it will, when he may face the enormity of what happened. But that time is not yet with us.’
As well as being diagnosed with ADHD, Lewis has a number of ‘mental difficulties’, his barrister said. ‘His mental age is low and his cognitive skills are very poor,’ Mr Riordan told the court.
He added that psychiatric reports reveal the defendant has an IQ in the region of 55 or 56 and a mental age of nine or 10.
He is also considered ‘alcohol dependent’ and ‘shows evidence of harmful use of cannabis’, the court heard. One of Miss Windsor’s relatives walked out of court as Mr Riordan said Lewis offered them his ‘sincere condolences’.
‘He is a very troubled 18-year-old,’ Mr Riordan said. Mr Justice Holroyde adjourned sentencing until 10.30am tomorrow.

Shocking: Gay 15-Year-Old Boy Rapes 65-Year-Old Man

Ben O’Neill pushed his terrified victim, 65, into a field before attacking him, forcing him to perform a sex act on him and then attempting to rape him again.
His elderly victim was unable to fight back as he suffers from a condition which restricts the use of his limbs, Nottingham Crown Court heard.
The judge took the unusual step of naming and releasing a photo of the teenager because of the seriousness of the crime.
O’Neill was jailed indefinitely for ‘public protection’ but must serve at least three-and-a-half years behind bars after a judge heard the drunk and drug-crazed teenager had subjected his victim to the sickening ten minute assault on August 4, saying ‘We’re going to have some fun together.’
He pleaded guilty to three serious sexual assault charges, plus two charges of robbery and charge of theft.
Hours earlier, O’Neill and an accomplice had been involved in the robbery of a mobile phone from a 24-year-man.
The robbery occurred on the site of the old Sherwood Colliery when the pair, who were part of a larger group, followed the 24-year-old.
The first male – who was never identified – hit the victim around the head with a bottle before O’Neill grabbed him in a bear hug.
The victim fell to the floor and was kicked unconscious, although he recalled O’Neill ordering the other perpetrator to stop because the victim was disabled.
The victim later woke up and realised his mobile phone and keys were missing. The next morning, O’Neill was part of a group who entered Cox’s Supermarket in Mansfield Woodhouse at around 6.30am, with O’Neill stealing a bottle of vodka.
Around 90 minutes later and still carrying the stolen vodka, he approached the disabled 65-year-old victim near an allotment site, before escorting him to a field.
O’Neill made the man perform a sex act on him as well committing rape and attempted rape.
Following the ordeal, O’Neill asked the man if he had any money on him and took his mobile phone before throwing it away. He then ordered him lay down until he had left the area.

Man Sets Village Ablaze Over WitchCraft, Kills 111 year Old Woman In The Process

111-year-old blind woman burnt to death
In what seems like a temporary visitation of sheer insanity, A 35-year-old man, Mr. Tyoakaa Ijoho, has allegedly set 10 thatched houses ablaze, killing a 111-year-old blind woman, Mama Martha Gyuse Bonko, in Adambge Village in Vandeikiya Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to eyewitnesses, Ijoho, who lost his father to a snake bite recently, was bitter and had gone to consult an oracle to ascertain the cause of the death of his father.

It was gathered that the native doctor, whom Ijoho consulted, allegedly told him that some of his family members had a hand in the death of his father, a development which prompted him to leave his place of abode in Konshisha Local Government Area of the state and headed straight for his village where he set the houses on fire.
One of the villagers, Abraham Chafa, told journalists that his mother, Mama Mezaga Chafa, aged 75, tried to help the 111-year-old woman out of one of the thatched houses but could not due to her age.
He explained further that his mother, who was not too strong, had to abandon the old woman who was eventually burnt to death by the fire, which Ijoho had set, adding that Ijoho, had left the community 18 years ago only to reappear that fateful day to set the village on fire.
He disclosed further that through the help of able-bodied youths and vigilante men, Ijoho was arrested and handed over to the police in Vandeikya while the body of Mama Martha Gyuse Bonko had been deposited at a private hospital in Tsar Mbaduku.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Daniel Ezeala, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

Lindsay Lohan's Probation To Be REVOKED! Jail Around The Corner?

Lindsay Lohan fail
OH noooo LiLo! This is BAAAD NEWZ!!
New reports reveal that Lindsay Lohan WILL (most likely) be sent to jail for fibbing to the cops!
As you may recall, back in June Lindz made a little boo-boo by LYINGpolice — which is a misdemeanor crime — when she said she was not driving the vehicle, when, in fact, multiple sources reveal she WAS.
Unluckily for the redhead, committing any crime is in direct violation of the her probation and — according to our source — the judge presiding over LiLo's probation case is NOT a fan!
Insiders say El Lay County Superior Court Judge Jane Godfrey plans to revoke Lindsay's probation and set the matter for a full hearing, on grounds she violated her probation in the jewelry case by breaking the law.
We knew the LA city attorney's office wants Linds to serve the MAX amount of jail time for this violation — so it seems no one in the system has her back.
Of course, the heavy hand of the law will not come down on the actress unless the criminal case is filed.
So far, the cops have yet to file the criminal case — but we hear it will be filed soon.
