Police pay compensation to 7 women led into 'abusive' and 'deceitful' relationships with undercover officers

Scotland Yard apologised to seven women who were deceived into "abusive, deceitful, manipulative and wrong" relationships with undercover police officers.
The Metropolitan Police said it has reached a settlement with the women over civil claims relating to the "totally unacceptable" behaviour of a number of officers working for two now disbanded units.
Assistant Commissioner Martin Hewit said: "I acknowledge that these relationships were a violation of the women's human rights, an abuse of police power and caused significant trauma.
"I unreservedly apologise on behalf of the Metropolitan Police Service. I am aware that money alone cannot compensate the loss of time, their hurt or the feelings of abuse caused by these relationships."
A woman who had a child with a man she did not know was an undercover copbanked £425,000 from the Metropolitan Police.

The Macina Liberation Front emerged in central Mali recently and has claimed responsibility for the attack in August in Sevare that killed 13 people.
There is growing speculation that MLF represents the new Boko Haram - the Islamist insurgent in Nigeria.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack however.

Houston toddler burned to death playing in oven while left home alone with her other young siblings: police

Gina Dennis, the grandmother of J'zyra Thompson, told KPRC-TV that she doesn't know what happened when the children were left alone at the northeast Houston apartment.
A 19-month-old Houston girl was burned to death by an oven when the toddler’s mother and her mom’s boyfriend left three children home alone, police said.
A juvenile court judge ordered the two other children and another one of their siblings, aged 3, 3, and 5, into foster homes Wednesday in a custody hearing a day after J’zyra Thomspon died, Texas Child Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin told the Daily News.
No one from J’zyra’s family showed up for the hearing, Olguin said. Efforts to contact her relatives were unsuccessful.

Police officer in California ambushed and shot dead while sitting in his car; suspects taken into custody following manhunt

Downey, California police officer Ricardo Galvez, 29, was fatally shot while sitting in his car.
Three people, including a teen, were arrested after a police officer in California was ambushed and gunned down while sitting in his car in the department's parking lot, authorities said.
The shooting happened at about 11 p.m. Wednesday in Downey, located in southeast Los Angeles County. The victim, Ricardo "Ricky" Galvez, 29, was on duty but not in uniform at the time of the attack, according to authorities. The two attackers shot into Galvez's personal car before driving away, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lt. John Corina said.

A small Canadian diamond company has announced the discovery of the world's second-biggest gem-quality diamond ever recovered.
Lucara Diamond Corp. said the 1,111-carat stone was found at its Karowe mine in north-centralBotswana.
The Type IIa diamond measures 65 millimetres by 56mm by 40mm.
The biggest gem-quality diamond ever found is the Cullinan diamond, a 3,106-carat stone found in the Premier mine in South Africa in 1905.
It was cut into several polished gems, the two largest of which are part of Britain's crown jewels.

The mastermind behind the Paris terror attacks is dead after his body was found "riddled with bullets" in the apartment at the centre of yesterday's armed siege.
Abdelhamid Abaaoud was identified by forensics efforts after yesterdays six-hour stand-off between terror suspects and police on the St Denis area of Paris.
The 28-year-old Belgian extremist was shot dead by a police sniper.
The Paris prosecutor Francois Molins revealed his body was found inside the apartment "riddled with bullets".
He was first hit by the sniper bullet then blown up by several grenades.
Terror suspects in the flat fired 5000 rounds during the operation during which Abaaoud's cousin Hasna Ait Boulahcen, 26, blew herself up.Mr Molins confirmed: "Abdel Hamid Abaaoud has just been formally identified, after comparing fingerprints, as having been killed during the raid.
