Downey, California police officer Ricardo Galvez, 29, was fatally shot while sitting in his car.
Three people, including a teen, were arrested after a police officer in California was ambushed and gunned down while sitting in his car in the department's parking lot, authorities said.
The shooting happened at about 11 p.m. Wednesday in Downey, located in southeast Los Angeles County. The victim, Ricardo "Ricky" Galvez, 29, was on duty but not in uniform at the time of the attack, according to authorities. The two attackers shot into Galvez's personal car before driving away, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lt. John Corina said.

A K-9 police officer searches a vehicle after suspects drove off from Downey police headquarters into the city of Montebello, Calif. on Thursday.
Investigators believe the deadly shooting stemmed from a botched robbery attempt. The suspects are two adults and a 17-year-old.
A fellow Downey police officer heard the shooting and followed the suspects into the city of Montebello, where the attackers ditched their car, Corina said at a press conference. Authorities later interviewed people in the area before making arrests.
Galvez was a five-year veteran of the department and former U.S. Marine. He was not married, and according to the department, is survived by his mother, brother and sisters.
Downey Police Chief Carl Charles, speaking at a press conference, reflected on Galvez's dedication to his job.
"His smile was infectious, and his professionalism was always on display," Charles said.
