Fire guts TheNews office, UNILAG medical hostel

The headquarters of the weekly magazine, TheNews, located at Acme Road, Lagos, was yesterday evening gutted by fire. The fire reportedly affected the last floor of the two-storey building.
Sources say the fire, which started around 6:30pm, was caused by a power surge.
No one was injured in the fire but valuable property was destroyed in the unfortunate incident.
A source said, “The fire was very ferocious. I think the fire was caused by power surge. When the power supply was restored, the voltage was high and some employees did not switch off their systems.”
Also on Wednesday, the male hostel of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Idi Araba, was gutted by fire.
It was learnt that the fire started from room 648 and spread to room 647 on the third floor of Block 6 Alliakilu Hostel.
One of the occupants of room 648 told one of our correspondents that they were not able to salvage any of their property.
The student who declined to be named said, “Around 10am, I was playing basketball when I saw students running all over the place. When I got to the hostel, I noticed that it was my room that was on fire.
“We tried to put out the fire but it was so intense that it soon spread to the next room. The fire was raging because we couldn’t get a fire extinguisher which was in the hostel manager’s room.
“Also, there’s no water on the third floor so students had to go downstairs to get water which we used in fighting the fire.”
Another student attributed the fire incident to a power surge.
According to the student: “There were electric sparks in the room in April while we were attempting to install a ceiling fan. Some wires got burnt in the process. A few months later, a socket in the room sparked and it caused a blackout on the entire floor.
“After that incident, engineers came to repair it but since then, no permanent solution has been found. The engineers demanded money for the repair from us and after giving them, they didn’t solve the problem.”
The college public relations officer, Sunday Odejimi confirmed the incident but blamed the students for not reporting any act of extortion to the relevant authorities to be properly addressed.
He reportedly said, “Everybody knows the power situation in the country. If they had problem, why didn’t they report to the appropriate authorities?
“If they were being extorted as claimed, they should have reported to the students union which would have relayed the problem to the authorities.”

3 Crushed To Death In Lagos As Container Falls

Three persons were yesterday crushed to death when a 40-feet containerized vehicle fell on a Mazda car on the Badagry-Seme Expressway.
The accident which occurred at about 1.15 p.m., was attributed to the bad road which has been a nightmare to commuters and other users of the road.
The containerized vehicle with registration number XT 339 AKD was said to be conveying some goods when it lost control and fell on the car, with four occupants. Three of the passengers died instantly, while the driver was in a critical condition.
The accident caused a heavy traffic while passers-by went on an immediate rescue mission of the trapped persons, before officials of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, came to the scene of the accident.
Three of the passengers pulled out from the crushed car had already died. The driver of the truck, reports say fled immediately the accident occurred.
According to eyewitnesses, the bad portion of the road has been left because of the on-going reconstruction and that the danger has been there all along.
“For the fact that the road is no longer manageable, road users often drive against traffic to avoid container carrying trucks; now it has claimed lives,” exclaimed a regular road user.
The accident attracted a lot of condemnations of the government towards its people, with an eye-witness saying; “This is an indication that we are all driving on a time bomb. It could be I or you tomorrow”
As at the time LASTMA officials arrived the scene of the accident with a towing van in order to lift the container off the compressed car, a large number good spirited Nigerians, who swung into action almost immediately the accident occurred, had already evacuated the passengers on board the car with registration number UK 641 KJA.

Another Nigerian Man Caught With $320,000 At International Airport

Another Nigerian has been arrested with $320,000 cash at the Murtala Muhammed Airport.
The man, Onwuekwe Chidi was about to board a Qatar plane to Doha, when he was arrested.
Mr Epowei Charles, the Area Comptroller, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMI) Customs Command, said though Chidi declared the money, he could not explain the source of the currency or show adequate proof of his business to customs officials.

“The passenger and the money had been handed over to officials of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for further investigations,” Charles said.
In the last 3 months, the Customs and the EFCC have seized close to $11million from Nigerian travellers, especially to Dubai and Doha.
Just last week, Akinyele Adetula, a staff of FAAN, on whom was found $1.4million forfeited a quarter of the money to the Federal Government after trial in Lagos.
The trophy for the biggest cash smuggling belongs to Abubakar Sheriff Tijjani. The lanky dollar courier had $7,049.444, in his possession when he was arrested 27 September, 2012. He forfeited only a quarter of the undeclared $2.5million.
Analysts said the huge forex cash Nigerians are taking to other climes, suggest a heavy flight of much needed capital that can be deployed to better productive uses.
