The Heartland of Sex Trafficking (A Dark Business in The Midwest)

The Midwest remains stubbornly fertile ground for sex trafficking

Human trafficking is a major industry in the U.S., but one of the problems in identifying what it is is because it looks like many things to many people. In the Midwest, trafficking is dominant because of the intersection of federal interstates that easily transport victims through a circuit that can span all the major cities in just a week, spurred by online advertising that authorities say is difficult to stop. This new series will look at the sex trafficking of minors, labor trafficking found on major farm operations. A third story will look at how trafficking has hit Cook County, Illinois, the heart of Chicago, and how a local sheriff there has made stopping it one of his highest priorities.

Indonesia Stock Exchange collapse: Dozens injured as mezzanine floor gives way above Starbucks

Fire swiftly engulfed a shuttle boat Sunday afternoon used to ferry patrons to a casino ship off Florida’s Gulf Coast, forcing the crew and dozens of passengers to jump into chilly waters close to shore, authorities said.

Fifteen people complaining of chest pain, smoke inhalation and other minor injuries were taken to the hospital to be checked, authorities said, adding no injuries were life-threatening after the huge fire consumed the boat close to a residential neighborhood.

Port Richey Chief of Police Gerard DeCanio said all 50 passengers and the crew reached land safely as the fast-spreading flames devoured the shuttle boat. Huge flames leaped from the vessel and a dark plume of black smoke cut across sunny skies on an unusually chilly winter day in the Tampa Bay region.

“It looked pretty dramatic because the shuttle boat burned really fast,” DeCanio told The Associated Press by phone.

What You Need to Know Before Getting a Tattoo

Image result for What to look for in a tattoo

It’s important to have your core idea fleshed out before setting up a consultation — unless you’re coming in for lettering, which often only requires you to decide on a font. During the consultation, your artist can work out the finer details. You can show them any images you’ve saved as inspiration and figure out placement and pricing.

Depending on the time they have available, the artist may create a mock-up of your tattoo on the spot or a few days later, but ultimately, the final results will depend on several factors:

how much of your body you want to dedicate to the art
how feasible the tattoo placement is
how well the colors you want will show up on your skin tone
how much time you want to spend with the artist
Here’s more on what you should consider when designing your next tattoo:

Depression : Those January Blues Are Real. Here’s How to Avoid Them.

Do Antidepressants Help in the Long Run?

If you feel depressed in January, it’s not just in your head.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and post-holiday blues can hit hard after the parties and tinsel fade away.

The disorder, in fact, affects at least 10 million people in the United States.

Experts say that these January blues can be caused by a number of reasons.

However, there are also many life-changing ways to avoid these seasonal downswings.

“You can shift your thought patterns, so you won’t be subjected to them,” Dr. Don Mordecai, Kaiser Permanente’s national leader for mental and behavioral health, told Healthline.

The Psychology of Inequality ( Researchers find that much of the damage done by being poor comes from feeling poor )

n 2016, the highest-paid employee of the State of California was Jim Mora, the head coach of U.C.L.A.’s football team. (He has since been fired.) That year, Mora pulled in $3.58 million. Coming in second, with a salary of $2.93 million, was Cuonzo Martin, at the time the head coach of the men’s basketball team at the University of California, Berkeley.

Victor Khalil, the chief dentist at the Department of State Hospitals, made six hundred and eighty-six thousand dollars; Anne Neville, the director of the California Research Bureau, earned a hundred and thirty-five thousand dollars; and John Smith, a seasonal clerk at the Franchise Tax Board, earned twelve thousand nine hundred dollars.

I learned all this from a database maintained by the Sacramento Bee. The database, which is open to the public, is searchable by name and by department, and contains precise salary information for the more than three hundred thousand people who work for California. Today, most state employees probably know about the database. But that wasn’t the case when it was first created, in 2008. This made possible an experiment.

Japanese astronaut apologizes for spreading 'fake news' after claiming to have grown 3.5 inches while in space

Norishige Kanai japan astronaught

Japanese astronaut Norishige Kanai, on a mission to the International Space Station, apologized on Wednesday for saying he had grown 9 cm (3.5 inches) while in space and expressing concern about whether he'd be safe on his return to Earth.

Most astronauts "grow" during protracted space missions because their spines extend in the absence of gravity, but the gains are usually limited to a couple of centimeters (inches) maximum and disappear once they are back on the ground.

The 41-year-old Kanai, who went to space last month for a nearly six-month mission, posted on Twitter on Monday that he had "a big announcement."

"My height's been measured here in space and somehow, somehow, I've grown 9 cm! In only three weeks I've really shot up, something I haven't seen since high school," he tweeted.

Lishavsky who ran a shoe repair shop was detained in June last year in Komsomolsk-on-Amur after one foster girl complained to a teacher who alerted police.

At least 13 killed in Southern California mudslides

At least thirteen people have been killed in mudslides in Southern California according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff, with numbers of fatalities expected to rise.

Ibuprofen linked to male infertility, study says

Image result for ibuprofen infertility

What is ibuprofen?
Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

Ibuprofen is used to reduce fever and treat pain or inflammation caused by many conditions such as headache, toothache, back pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps, or minor injury.

Ibuprofen is used in adults and children who are at least 6 months old.

Ibuprofen has a negative impact on the testicles of young men, a study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found. When taking ibuprofen in doses commonly used by athletes, a small sample of young men developed a hormonal condition that typically begins, if at all, during middle age. This condition is linked to reduced fertility.

Advil and Motrin are two brand names for ibuprofen, an over-the-counter pain reliever. CNN has contacted Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, the makers of both brands, for comment.

Update your iPhone, iPad and Mac NOW! Apple issues update to protect users from 'Spectre' chip flaw

The latest updates, 11.2.2 for iOS and 10.13.2 for macOS High Sierra, are available now for iPhones, iPads, and Macs to protect users. Pictured, a boy makes faces while testing out the Animoji feature on an iPhone X at the Apple Store Union Square on November 3, 2017, in San Francisco, California.

Apple has released an updated version of its operating system software to fix a major microchip security flaw that affected nearly all computer chips made in the last decade.
Last week, Alphabet Inc's Google and other security researchers disclosed two major chip flaws, one called Meltdown affecting only Intel Corp chips and one called Spectre, that left computing devices vulnerable to hackers.

'iOS 11.2.2 includes security improvements to Safari and WebKit to mitigate the effects of Spectre,' the firm said.
The technology giant also released software updates for its Mac, Apple TV and Apple Watch.

The iPhone maker had said on Thursday it will release a patch for the Safari web browser on its iPhones, iPads and Macs.
Apple had also said that there were no known instances of hackers taking advantage of the flaw.

'For our customers' protection, Apple doesn't disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are available,' the company said on its website.
The iOS update is available for iPhone 5s and later, iPad Air and later, and iPod touch 6th generation, it said.

Here's How Alcohol Can Damage DNA and Increase Cancer Risk

Here's How Alcohol Can Damage DNA and Increase Cancer Risk

Scientists think they know how alcohol damages DNA and increases the risk of cancer.

Researchers in England conducted the study in mice, however, experts say that the mechanisms linking alcohol to DNA damage are the same in mice and men. Indeed, earlier studies have shown strong links between alcohol and certain cancers in humans; in addition, the International Agency for Cancer Research classifies alcohol consumption as "carcinogenic to humans."

What wasn't clear, however, was how alcohol did its damage. [7 Ways Alcohol Affects Your Health]

The study, which was published Jan. 3 in the journal Nature, took a precise look at how exposure to alcohol, and the compounds that result when the body breaks down alcohol, cause damage to chromosomes in blood stem cells. These stem cells are crucial for replenishing cells lost throughout the life span, but once they are damaged, they can spread the damage further. (Stem cells can divide and replenish cells for long periods of time.)

What is diabetes mellitus?

Diabetes mellitus is a disease condition in which there is a chronic rise in the level of blood glucose as a result of abnormal glucose (blood sugar) regulation, resulting from insulin deficiency or insulin poor performance. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2.

What are the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?

Both types are characterised by abnormal elevated blood glucose (sugar) above the physiologically normal range. Type 1 results from destruction to insulin-producing cells (beta -cells of islet of Langerhans) of the pancreas. It also results from the low-level of insulin in the glucose-regulating hormone. It is also referred to as juvenile diabetes (common in children).

Explaining Meltdown with parallel worlds, libraries, and a bank heist

Security vulnerabilities are always tricky to explain. People are supposed to be scared of them, because their data could be compromised, but the very nature of security problems means they involve obscure technical details that we usually don’t have to think about at all.

So, enter the analogy. A number of fun, strange, possibly useful analogies have sprung up this week to try to explain the major Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities that Google has discovered. Like any analogy, they fall short of perfectly detailed explanation, and will typically break if you push them too far, but they can still be a helpful way to get a vibe for how these exploits actually work.
The best knowledge we have on how these exploits actually work, in gory technical detail, are the two PDFs published by Google which explain the Meltdown and Spectre attacks in research paper form.

Arsene Wenger to rotate Arsenal squad at Nottingham Forest in FA Cup gamble amid hectic fixture list

Arsene Wenger has admitted he will have to gamble on the FA Cup because of Arsenal’s figure pile-up.
Wenger says he plans to “rotate” his line-up at Nottingham Forest on Sunday but is expected to field a stronger team for the Carabao Cup semi final at Chelsea next Wednesday.
The FA Cup has been Wenger’s salvation during his Arsenal reign as he won it for a record seventh time in May and that helped him stay for another two year contract.
Wenger will have to hedge his bets at Forest and plans to use David Ospina in goal, hinted Ainsley Maitland-Niles might play in midfield and is likely to pick a mix-and-match XI similar to what he has done in the Europa League.

After the fender-bender, Falce and a man police identified as Alonzo Leron Smith got out of their cars, exchanged words and motioned at each other. Smith then delivered a single punch to the face and Falce fell backward, his head hitting the pavement.
