The most expensive private home in America will hit the market this spring in Los Angeles for a cool $500 million.
The Bel Air mansion was designed by Paul McClean, the same architect who built the $88 million estate Beyoncé and Jay-Z bought in 2017. McClean's contemporary homes have also sold to the Winklevoss twins, Calvin Klein, and Swedish DJ Avicii.
Los Angeles real estate developer Nile Niami bought the hilltop property in 2012 for $28 million and gutted the original 10,000 square-foot house to make room for the mega-mansion, which he dubbed "The One," according to the New York Times.

An Indian man charged with making an airport bomb threat says he was misheard when asking about his Bombay-to-Delhi flight.
Vinod Moorjani, 45, is accused of saying "bomb hai" [there is a bomb] during a call with the authorities at Mumbai International Airport on Sunday.
But he says he was asking about the status of his "Bom-Del" flight. Mumbai was formerly known as Bombay.

Matthew Walker: My name is Matthew Walker. I am a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California Berkeley and I am the author of the book, "Why We Sleep."

Should we actually be taking naps during the day? Well, we certainly know from evidence in my own sleep center and that of many other scientists that naps can give you benefits for both your brain and your body. But naps can actually be a double-edged sword because whilst we're awake during the day, we're building up sleepiness or sleep pressure. So that when you try to fall asleep at night, you'll fall asleep quickly and then you'll stay asleep. And when we sleep, we actually release that sleepiness, almost like a valve on a pressure cooker, so that we wake up the next morning feeling refreshed.

Celebrities Who Faced Prostate Cancer

In early October 2016, actor and comedian Ben Stiller, now 51, shocked fans and colleagues when he announced he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer two years earlier.

But he wasn’t alone: More than 200,000 American men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). It occurs when cells in the prostate – a male gland that produces seminal fluid – start to grow uncontrollably. In many cases, it’s a slow-growing cancer, and treatments range from careful monitoring to surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, the NCI says.

The American Cancer Society advises most men to begin testing for prostate cancer at age 50. Screening is recommended at age 45 for African Americans and those with a close relative who was diagnosed with the disease before they were 65; those with more than one close relative should start tests at 40.

Leukaemia treatment can be made more effective by using a drug for iron overload

Chemotherapy for one type of leukaemia could be improved by giving patients a drug currently used to treat an unrelated condition, new research shows.

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is an aggressive cancer that stops healthy blood cell production. Chemotherapy is the standard treatment, but improvements are needed as the five-year survival rate in patients older than 60 is only 5-15 per cent.

Now, by studying how leukaemia cells infiltrate bone marrow, where blood cells are created, researchers led by a team from Imperial College London have made a crucial discovery.

Studying mice and human samples, they found that certain areas in the bone marrow support blood stem cells, and when these are overtaken by leukaemia cells, these stem cells are lost and production of healthy blood is significantly reduced. This can cause anaemia, infection, and bleeding in patients, and affects the success of chemotherapy.

NASA Astronaut, 1st to Fly Untethered in Space, Dies at 80

NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless, the first person to fly freely and untethered in space, has died. He was 80.

He was famously photographed in 1984 flying with a hefty spacewalker's jetpack, alone in the cosmic blackness above a blue Earth. He traveled more than 300 feet away from the space shuttle Challenger during the spacewalk.

“The iconic photo of Bruce soaring effortlessly in space has inspired generations of Americans to believe that there is no limit to the human potential,” Sen. John McCain said in a statement. The Arizona Republican and McCandless were classmates at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Diet rich in apples and tomatoes may help repair lungs of ex-smokers, study suggests

A study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found the natural decline in lung function over a 10-year period was slower among former smokers with a diet high in tomatoes and fruits, especially apples, suggesting certain components in these foods might help restore lung damage caused by smoking.

The researchers found that adults who on average ate more than two tomatoes or more than three portions of fresh fruit a day had a slower decline in lung function compared to those who ate less than one tomato or less than one portion of fruit a day, respectively. The researchers inquired about other dietary sources such as dishes and processed foods containing fruits and vegetables (e.g. tomato sauce) but the protective effect was only observed in fresh fruit and vegetables.

Argentina submarine: Police raid navy and German company offices

Argentine police have raided navy shipyards as a probe into repair irregularities deepens. One of the two German companies implicated in the sub's repairs, Ferrostaal, has also had its local offices searched.
Argentine police searched through navy headquarters and state-run shipyard offices on Wednesday in a bid to investigate the disappearance of a submarine last month.
A judge ordered the searches to help probe alleged irregularities with repairs on the German-built submarine.
The searches came after the navy appeared to implicate two German companies Ferrostaal and Hawker, for electrical repair problems with the submarine. Argentine authorities on Wednesday also searched the Buenos Offices of Ferrostaal.

Ukraine arrests official who doubled as 'agent of Russian intelligence'

Ukraine's state security service (SSU) on Thursday arrested a government official they claim was doubling as an "agent of Russian intelligence." The official formed part of Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman'sinner circle, according to authorities.
"Together with the Security Service of Ukraine, an official in the government's secretariat was found to be working for a long time in the interests of the enemy state. He was detained," Groysman said in a post on Facebook.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian authorities are aware of the arrest, "but we have no information," reported state-owned TASS news agency.

Authorities did not provide a name or position for the suspect, but local media reported that Stanislav Yezhov, the premier's assistant, had been detained a day earlier.
Yezhov reportedly accompanied Groysman on all international trips during his time as assistant, and previously worked in the president's office and the Ukrainian embassy in the US. Ukraine's state security service said he had been recruited by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).

The unidentified women gangsters who are currently on the run, like to take Selfies before committing their crimes, including recording and live streaming their horror acts on social media.
In the footage released by the Brazilian authorities, with the hope of finding the notorious killers, one of the members is seen stuffing clothes into their victim's mouth, before she and another member began to stab her repeatedly, while the third woman filmed the horror scene.

There is no method that has been proven to prevent the occurrence of dementia later in life, according to an analysis of numerous studies.

A team of researchers from the Minnesota Evidence-based Practice Center wanted to see whether vitamins and supplements, brain training, prescription medications, or physical activity can help in preventing dementia.

The researchers wanted to analyze possible interventions for dementia because the number of dementia patients is expected to rise sharply as the population ages.

The team, however, found that none of the interventions was successful and nothing seemed to prevent the condition after analyzing four systematic reviews and their findings. The researchers published their paper in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

One of the first notable losses of the year came in January with the passing of legendary actress Mary Tyler Moore. The television icon who starred in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" was one of the most beloved actresses in modern history. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in her early thirties and went on to become an advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Female pioneers who helped shape our history were lost this year, including Clare Hollingworth, a veteran war correspondent widely known for breaking the news that WWII had started, died at the age of 105 in January.

Norma McCorvey was also among the year's deaths. She was the person behind the anonymous "Jane Roe" in the landmark Roe v. Wade case, which ultimately led to the legalization of abortion in the United States in the 1970s. McCorvey eventually split from pro-choice activists and joined the pro-life movement to advocate against abortion, despite her role in its legalization.

Amber alert issued for Houston baby after mother stabbed to death

Authorities have issued an Amber Alert for an infant girl in Houston who was reported missing after her mother was found fatally stabbed. Police initially believed the infant girl was with her father, but Houston police said later that they had found the father in San Antonio, but the 6-week-old baby was still missing.

Houston police said Thomas Bernardez "stated he was not involved in the murder."

Pastor to give money from sale of 709-carat "Peace Diamond" to the poor

An African pastor's miracle discovery of a massive uncut diamond has just been sold at auction so the community leader can bring clean water and medical supplies to his village, CBS Denver reports. The 709-carat "Peace Diamond" was discovered in the village of Koryardu in March.

The diamond's owner, Pastor Emmanuel Momoh, vowed to sell the gem in order bring the struggling village the relief it needed.

"The Peace Diamond will greatly improve the lives of our people as it will bring clean water, electricity, schools, medical facilities, bridges and roads to our villages and the Kono District," Momoh said in a statement, obtained by Forbes.

After an initial offer for the world's 14th largest diamond was rejected by Sierra Leone's government in May, the stone went back on the auction block and sold for $6.5 million in New York on Dec. 4. The hefty price tag, which is actually $1.3 million less than the offer in May, was paid by British jeweler Graff Diamonds.

World 100m champion Justin Gatlin caught up in fresh doping scandal involving his coach and agent

Anti-doping and athletics chiefs are investigating claims that members of world 100 metres champion Justin Gatlin’s team offered to sell performance-enhancing drugs .

The Athletics Integrity Unit and the US Anti-Doping Agency are seeking urgent answers from Gatlin’s camp after it was claimed his coach Dennis Mitchell and agent Robert Wagner offered to supply testosterone and human-growth hormone to an undercover reporter.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper alleged that, in an undercover investigation, Mitchell and Wagner had offered to supply banned drugs for an actor training for a film.

Undercover reporters visited Gatlin's Florida training camp and they claim the pair offered to supply and administer testosterone and human growth hormone.

22-year-old mauled to death by her pit bulls while taking them for a walk

A 22-year-old Virginia woman was mauled to death by her two pit bulls while taking them for a walk near her home. They then stood guard over her body after killing her.

Bethany Lynn Stephens was taking her dogs out for a walk in Goochland, in the US state of Virginia, when they attacked her. Bethany’s dad called the emergency services at 8pm on Thursday after she hadn’t returned from walking the dogs. Then he went looking for her in the area where she often walked the dogs and found the disturbing scene. Bethany was found with horrific head and throat injuries while the dogs stood guarding her body aggressively.

More than 6,500 inmates are linked to increase in smuggling of drugs, weapons and phones into prisons

More than 6,500 prisoners linked to organised crime gangs are helping orchestrate smuggling rackets behind bars, a new study has found.
One in every 13 of England and Wales' 85,500 inmates are involved in, or have connections to, gangs sneaking drugs, weapons and mobile phones over the walls.
The figure, calculated by the National Crime Agency and the Prison Service, reveals for the first time the scale of a problem fuelling a surge in violence and disorder in jails.
Justice Secretary David Lidington used a keynote speech yesterday to warn that smuggling gangs were attacking prisons to exploit the 'captive market'.
Illegal operations to sneak contraband into jails had changed from 'crude and opportunistic' to 'sophisticated and systematic' – including the use of new technologies including smartphones and drones.
He said: 'The fact is, our prisons are facing a clear and present danger from well-organised individuals and criminal networks.
'These are networks that are every bit as professionally operated as a legitimate business but they happen to be engaged in criminal activity.

Amtrak issues statement on its train derailment that killed at least six people and injured 100 others on its first day of service

Yesterday an Amtrak passenger train derailed outside Tacoma, Washington on a new service route. Authorities said at least six people were killed and more than 100 people were injured and taken to hospitals.

Amtrak President and Co-CEO Richard Anderson said they will "do everything" in their power to support passengers, crew members and their families in the train derailment.

A victim of a horror crash which claimed the lives of six people was a drug dealer who once led police on a terrifying 120mph chase.

Kasar Jehangir was in a high-powered Audi S3 with three friends which slammed head-on into a taxi in Birmingham on Sunday.

The 25-year-old and pals Tauqeer ‘Tokx’ Hussain, 26, and Mohammed Fasha 30, died in the crash.

Taxi driver Imtiaz Mohammed, 33, and his two passengers - a man aged 42 and woman aged 43 - were also killed.

Zakkria Khan, 22, who was in the Audi, survived the crash and remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

It emerged tonight that Jehangir had only recently been released from prison.

Breast Cancer in Young Women

Breast cancer is more common in older adults. At age 30, a woman’s risk of getting the disease is 1 in 227. By age 60, a woman has a 1 in 28 chance of receiving this diagnosis. Although the odds are much lower for younger women, they can and do get breast cancer. More than 13,000 women ages 40 or under will be diagnosed this year.

When breast cancer is diagnosed at a young age, it’s more likely to be aggressive and to spread quickly. Young women may not get a diagnosis right away because many organizations don’t recommend regular mammogram screenings until age 45 or 50. It’s also harder for doctors to find breast cancer in young women than in older women because younger women have denser breasts. This means that they have more breast tissue than fat tissue. Tumors don’t show up as well on mammograms in women with dense breasts.
