Take a look inside the dirty process that produces one of the world's most valuable illegal drugs

Colombia cocaine production
Coca plants grow just two months a year amid the lush greenery of the Colombian countryside. But the cocaine those plants produce powers a multibillion dollar industry that has spread around the world.
Despite the reputation for decadence and sophistication that has been built up around cocaine, the production process is simple.
Local farmers, sometimes families aided by neighbors, pick leaves by hand and then put them through a complex and noxious process to eventually turn those leaves turned into coca paste.
That paste can then be sold to traffickers, either Colombia's left-wing rebel group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) or one of the many gangs that have proliferated in the 20 years since the fearsome and powerful Medellin cartel of Pablo Escobar disintegrated in the wake of Escobar's ignominious death in 1993.
Despite intense and often violent efforts by Colombia (with strong backing by the US) to reduce coca cultivation, the trade has seen a resurgence in recent years.
The photos below, taken by the Associated Press' Rodrigo Abd, document the coca-paste-production process, revealing the humble beginningsof one of the world's most lucrative illegal drugs.

In the past month, Turkey has moved to normalize relations with Israel, Russia, and now — according to comments made by Turkey's new prime minister, as well as a Foreign Policy reportpublished Wednesday — with the Assad regime in Syria.
"It is our greatest and irrevocable goal: Developing good relations with Syria and Iraq, and all our neighbors that surround the Mediterranean and the Black Sea," Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Wednesday.
"We normalized relations with Russia and Israel," Yildirim said. "I'm sure we will normalize our relations with Syria as well. For the fight against terrorism to succeed, stability needs to return to Syria and Iraq."
A new report published the same day in Foreign Policy claims that two members of Turkey's Homeland Party — a nationalist movement "with an anti-Western and anti-American platform" — have been meeting with Syrian government officials over the past year to discuss "how to prepare the ground for Turkey and Syria to resume diplomatic relations and political cooperation."
They say they have been relaying the outcomes of these meetings to high-ranking Turkish military and Foreign Ministry officials.

UNIBEN’s Black Axe becoming a leading drug gang in Italy

Black Axe, a fraternity that started at the University of Benin in the 1970s, is on its way to becoming one of the leading drug gangs in Palermo, Italy.
Prosecutors in the Sicilian capital of Palermo are warning that a new alliance between the mafia and “Nigerian criminal gangs moving in from Libya” could herald a new era of organised crime, UK Guardian is reporting.
“The neighbourhoods under mafia control have changed profoundly in recent years due to the growing presence of foreigners, especially Nigerians coming on boats,” Leonardo Agueci, Palermo’s deputy chief prosecutor, was quoted to have said.
“Among them, there [are a small number] of people who want to transfer their illegal trafficking, linked to prostitution and drug dealing, to Sicily. And the mafia was quite happy to integrate them into their criminal business.”
In Ballarò, a mafia stronghold market area in the historic centre of the city, a whistle is traditionally used by Italian dealers working for Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian mafia, to attract customers, who are offered hashish, marijuana and cocaine.

Near E. 66th St. in Central Park, teenagers from the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens walked around in groups, hunting for the creatures that tended to lurk near statues of the author Walter Scott, the legendary sled dog Balto and a memorial to the 107th Infantry in World War I.

Teresa and Theresa May - know the difference
Theresa May will be our new Prime Minister - but not everyone has figured out how to spell her name just yet.

But there is no sign of Theresa May spelled with an "h", the woman who will take over from David Cameron imminently and is the daughter of a vicar.
Instead a very different woman is trending - Teresa May: glamour model, soft porn actress and veteran of the Prodigy's video for Smack My Bitch Up.

Mother jumps on car bonnet as thief drives off with her kids inside

A man who stole a car in San Bernardino, Calif., late Sunday night with two small children in the back seat was followed and ultimately arrested because of the vigilance of three good Samaritans, police said.
San Bernardino police Lt. Rich Lawhead said, at around 11:30pm late Sunday night, a mother who had her 2 young children strapped in their car seats in the back of the vehicle, ran into a convenience store to buy them some drinks. The woman left her car running, the air conditioner on and parked directly in front of the market window so she could see the car from inside the store.

Unknown to her, a local transient, 21 year old Steven Young, was watching her from outside. As soon as the mother took her eyes off the car for a minute, Young jumped into the vehicle and began to reverse the car. The mother who was leaving the store just as the gray sedan was backing up, jumped on the bonnet of the car to try and stop the driver from fleeing with her children in it.

Young allegedly swerved left and right until the mother was shaken off, then he sped off with the car with the children in it, police said.

Johannesburg (AFP) - Two South African brothers arrested on terrorism charges were plotting to blow up the US embassy in Pretoria and Jewish institutions, and planned to join the so-called Islamic State, police said Monday.
The 23-year-old twins, Brandon-Lee and Tony-Lee Thulsie, appeared briefly in a Johannesburg magistrate court after being arrested at the weekend.
"It is alleged that they wanted to bomb the US embassy and Jewish facilities in the country," Hangwani Mulaudzi, spokesman for South Africa's elite police, the Hawks, told AFP.
The United States and Britain warned last month of possible imminent "terrorist" attacks by Islamic extremists in South Africa's major cities.
The two men, who are accused of planning to join the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria, will remain in custody and return to court on July 19 to allow for further investigation.
