San Francisco tour bus crashes, injuring 20 people

San Francisco tour bus crashes, injuring 20 people

What began as a serene tour through one of the nation’s most picturesque cities turned into a two-block ride of terror when an open-air tour bus careened wildly out of control in San Francisco’s Union Square, running down a bicyclist, striking two pedestrians and smashing into several moving cars before it plowed into scaffolding lining a construction site.
Twenty people were hurt, six critically, when the big blue bus with at least 30 people aboard raced through one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations Friday afternoon, leaving chaos and carnage in its wake.
“Everybody was asking what’s going on,” said Bay Area resident Hoda Emam, who rounded a corner leading into Union Square moments after the bus struck the scaffolding, bringing it down in a twisted heap of metal and other debris.
She saw paramedics sprinting toward the injured while emergency vehicles pulled up with their sirens blaring.

Hollande says Paris attacks an ‘act of war’ by Islamic State group

Speaking in a televised address to the nation on Saturday, French President François Hollande accused the Islamic State (IS) group of conducting a series of attacks in and around Paris late Friday that left at least 127 people dead.

Speaking from the Elysée presidential palace the morning after France saw its worst day of violence since World War II, Hollande said the attacks were “an act of war" committed by the Islamic State group’s "terrorist army”.
The French president said the atrocities were, “against France, against the values that we defend everywhere in the world, against what we are: A free country that means something to the whole planet."
The Islamic State (IS) jihadist group claimed responsibility on Saturday for the series of apparently coordinated attacks in and around Paris.

Why France has become a prime target for terrorists

Here's how Amazon changed its home page to mark the Paris attacks
Many experts aren't surprised that Islamic terrorists targeted France in attacks that killed at least 127 people and injured hundreds more in Paris.
John Schindler, the national-security columnist for the New York Observer, tweeted on Saturday: "Jihadists with Balkan small arms were shooting up France in 1995 ... got no idea why anybody is surprised by last night's horror."
Attackers used guns and bombs at several sites across Paris on Friday, including the Stade de France and the Bataclan concert hall, where a shooting rampage and hostage situation left more than 100 dead. Eight attackers have died — seven after killing themselves using explosive vests, according to Reuters — and authorities are now searching for accomplices.

 story
A woman told police an abductor raped her up to six times a day while she was held captive over a five-week period in rural Alaska, with the last attack committed as she heard a military evacuation helicopter landing near the man’s remote cabin to take her to a hospital.
The woman said Daniel Selovich, who goes by the nickname Pirate, used duct tape to bind the two together at night and placed a rope around her neck so she couldn’t run away, Alaska State Trooper Matthew Iverson wrote in an affidavit.
She said, “It would be better for her to run away from the cabin and possibly be eaten by a bear than continue being physically and sexually assaulted by Daniel,” Iverson wrote.
Selovich was arraigned this week on kidnapping, sexual assault and assault charges in Fairbanks Superior Court. No pleas were entered. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Nov. 20. Calls to the Public Defender’s Office in Fairbanks, which is representing Selovich, weren’t immediately returned.

De La Hoya to Mayweather: 'As for your fights? We've already forgotten them'

Oscar De La Hoya, the Hall of Fame fighter whose Golden Boy Promotions has become one of boxing's leading promoters, shredded Floyd Mayweather in an open letter, saying that he was "boring" and that "the fight game will be a better one without you in it" in the wake of his recent retirement.
In the letter, which appears in the December edition of Playboy magazine, De La Hoya took all kinds of shots at Mayweather, the former pound-for-pound king who retired following his expected rout of Andre Berto on Sept. 12.
"You did it. You made it to the 49-0 mark, a milestone that you like to say only the great Rocky Marciano reached but that was actually achieved by others, including my idol Julio Cesar Chavez -- but who's counting," De La Hoya wrote. "And now you're retiring. Again. (The first time was after our fight in 2007.) This time you say it's for real. You're serious about hanging up the gloves. On to bigger and better things. So I'm writing to you today to wish you a fond farewell. Truth be told, I'm not unhappy to see you retire. Neither are a lot of boxing fans. Scratch that. MOST boxing fans. Why? Because the fight game will be a better one without you in it."

Pentagon officials say they are '99 per cent' sure they have assassinated British Islamic State executioner Mohammed Emwazi in the terror group's capital of Raqqa.
The 27-year-old from London, who became the face of ISIS in their sickening beheading videos of Western hostages including two British aid workers, was 'evaporated' by a missile as he climbed into a vehicle.
A senior US defence official told Fox News: 'We are 99 per cent sure we got him. We were on him for some time.'
The Kuwaiti-born militant, who moved to the UK when he was six years old, was blown up in a 'flawless' and 'clean hit', another defence source told ABC News.
However, there is a good chance his death will never be confirmed if his body has been incinerated and spies may have to rely on intercepting chatter from the jihadi militants to verify the reports.

More high-ranking college officials are resigning over racial tensions on campus

Claremont McKenna

Protests over racial tensions at another college campus in the US have led to the resignation of a high-ranking school official.
Mary Spellman, the dean of students at Claremont McKenna College — a private, liberal-arts school in Claremont, CA — has relinquished her post.
Spellman's resignation Thursday comes after students began protesting over a perceived racial bias on campus.
According to a report from the campus magazine, Claremont Independent, Spellman's resignation was the result of students' concerns that Spellman and other school officials "had not done enough to create a safe space on campus for students from marginalized backgrounds."
Claremont Independent reports the protests were bolstered by ongoing anguish over perceived racial prejudice within the small, private institution.
