Construction worker posing as neighborhood watch volunteer brutally raped drunken woman in West Village stairwell, prosecutors say

A construction worker posing as a neighborhood watch volunteer brutally raped a drunken woman in a West Village stairwell last month — and the entire 15-minute ordeal was caught on tape, prosecutors said.
The video evidence led a Manhattan grand jury to indict Ivan Ramos, 22, on two counts of rape and three counts of criminal sexual act.
He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday.
Ramos, who has a lengthy rap sheet, posed as a good Samaritan when he approached the 29-year-old victim on April 15, assistant district attorney Craig Ortner told the judge.
Ramos offered to accompany the woman to an ATM so she could get cab money, the prosecutor said.
The woman, who was too drunk to remember her PIN, asked him to take her to the police, but Ramos took her down a stairwell on Perry St. and sexually assaulted her, the prosecutor said.
A judge granted the prosecutor’s request to increase his bail to $500,000.
“We’re going to wait on the results of any DNA testing, which I’m sure will vindicate him,” Ramos’ lawyer, Mel Reiss, said.

Another Journalist murdered in Benin City

Barely four weeks of the killing of Mr. Chucks Ogu, a Journalist with Independent Television and Radio, a privately owned Television Station in Benin,  was gruesomely murdered, another Journalist, Mr. Sashua Edeghagba has been killed by suspected armed robbers on Tuesday in Benin City, Edo State Capital.

Edeghagba, a crime Correspondent with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Bronze FM, Benin City, was shot dead on Tuesday night by unknown gunmen at number 12, Dawson lane off Dawnson street, Benin City, Edo State.
While Police said late Chucks Ogu's death is a case of "mistaken identity", that of Edeghagba was explained by the Police as a case of stray bullets from a robbery scene.
Reports have it that the late Edeghagba met his untimely death when he went to fix his car only to run into a robbery scene where himself together with a Policeman were shot.
Confirming the incident, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Olayinka Balogun, said the robbers fired sporadically into the air to scare away people after alarm was raised by neighbours who got wind of the robbery.
“There was a robbery incident Tuesday night and one of the victims they robbed was a policeman, who the robbers did not identify as so, since he was in mufti.
"During the robbery, neighbours who got wind of it raised alarm and started pursuing the robbers who at the same time started shooting sporadically to pave way for their escape.
“In the process, their bullets hit a policeman and another person who was later identified as a journalist. They were not the direct target of the hoodlums,” Balogun added.
Also speaking on the incidence, Bronze FM Controller of News and Current affairs, Mr Olufemi Fulani, said Edeghagba was killed by armed robbers who stormed the area where he had gone to fix his car, only to be met by the unfortunate incident.
"There was a robbery operation going on near the place where Edeghagba went to repair his car, it was learnt in a desperate bid to escape when neighbours raised the alarm over the robbery operation, the robbers purportedly shot sporadically to scare people away, and in the process shot a policeman and Edeghagba", Fulani said.
The corpse of the late Journalist has since been deposited in an undisclosed mortuary, while the policeman was said to be receiving treatment in a yet unknown hospital.

Ryan Seacrest buys Ellen DeGeneres’ mansion for $49m

Ellen just got $49M richer
US TV host and network producer Ryan Seacrest has bought talk show host Ellen DeGeneres‘ 9,200 square-foot Beverly Hills mansion for close to the $49 million asking price, according to TMZ.

‘Entertainment is not a hobby’ – D’banj (drops new single Go down’ – D’banj)

Last weekend, D’banj traveled to Ghana for the SoundCity Ghana Re-Launch Party which took place on Saturday,  May 12, 2012.
He granted popular Ghanaian blogger Ameyaw Debrah an exclusive interview where he talked about working with Kanye West, his new label, touring in the UK and a new Vodafone music portal.

Right now, D’banj must be proud of himself.
And if it had to be for a sole purpose, we could say he would be glad his ‘Oliver twist‘ single which was released a few days back is doing pretty well. ‘Oliver twist‘ is currently number nine on the iTunes UK charts.
We however can’t stop anticipating his fourth studio album –  obviously delayed because of the Mo’hits brouhaha and his US and UK activities.
D’banj has been recording other tunes and one of them has now leaked. Tentatively titled ‘Go down’, the unfinished song sounds like a throwback D’banj. The singer vocally expresses himself more than he has done in recent releases. Decent cut.
Let’s hope official releases will follow, and that the long-awaited album will drop soon

BREAKING NEWS: Man accused of murdering parents, siblings, to die by hanging

A Kano state High Court this morning sentenced Garba Bello Aliyu - on trial since September 2010 for the murder of his parents and three siblings - to death by hanging for each of the five murders.

The court found him guilty this morning and passed the sentence shortly after. His lawyers led by Ahmed Raji, have said they will pursue their client's appeal to its logical conclusion through all the courts of the land.

Garba Bello Aliyu was taken to court by the Kano State Justice Department after being arrested by the police on September 13, 2010, over the alleged killing of his father, Garba Bello; an officer then with the State Security Services (SSS) his mother, Habiba Garba, his younger brother Khalifa, and two sisters, Hafsat and Murjanatu.

The lone survivor of the killings, his eleven years old brother, Farouk Garba Bello had told the court at the commencement of the trial in 2011 that his brother, Bello Garba murdered their father, his mother and 3 siblings. He had escaped by taking refuge in a toilet, he claimed.

Bello had also made a confessional statement to the police after his arrest which he later claimed was made involuntarily, after operatives of the SSS had threatened him into admitting the offence.

LeBron James' brilliant destruction of Pacers can't mask his maddening habits

MIAMI – Early in the fourth quarter of Sunday's Game 1 win, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra looked the NBA's MVP in the eye and said, "You cannot get tired."
Normally, LeBron James starts the final quarter on the bench, but the coach decided the game was too close, Chris Bosh was out with an injury and, as Spoelstra put it, "We needed him."
James did not get tired. He had 16 points in the fourth quarter alone to help his team run away from the Pacers. The newly minted MVP was unstoppable down the stretch.
But why did it even come to this?
Game 1 was surprisingly close throughout, and the Heat didn't take control until the final minutes. James scored only six points in the first half. He attempted two free throws. It seemed like every play was James hustling the ball up court, slamming on the brakes, peeling back and then throwing it to someone else. That's even what happened leading up to Bosh's injury: James was close enough to the basket to finish or draw a foul, but he deferred and Bosh got hurt underneath the glass. This isn't to say James is responsible for a teammate's injury – he wasn't – but a bull in a china shop shouldn't be so hesitant to, you know, break some things.

That's what's so maddening about James. He's an MVP who isn't always MVP-ish. Even Wade said Sunday, "Sometimes he starts out aggressive, sometimes he don't."
Why?
Lebron James totaled 32 points and 15 rebounds in the Heat's Game 1 victory over the Pacers. (Getty Images)We all know the answer: James wants to be the consummate teammate. But Wade, who is a consummate teammate, is almost always ferocious. "Flash" bolted for the basket from the beginning of Game 1 like a dad who saw his infant about to fall down the stairs. He went to the line 14 times and made 13 of his tries. There's no reason James shouldn't do the same. The calls that went for Pacers center Roy Hibbert in the first round went against him Sunday, so it's not like the referees aren't going to give him the benefit of the doubt. James himself calls the Heat "an attack team," and it shouldn't take a close playoff game and an injury to a teammate for him to attack. Go to the rack, go to the stripe, go to the Finals. Period.
The Pacers deserve credit for hanging so tough. But the Heat had leads of 35 points or more in their first two games against Indiana this season. The Pacers were playing in their first ABC game since 2006. In a home game, after an MVP ceremony which the visitors were forced to watch, the Pacers should have been bulldozed. James should have had plenty of time to "get tired" in the fourth quarter. Bosh's injury put the Heat in a spot, but Miami was losing the entire time the starting center was in the game.
Hibbert said it best of LeBron: "He's like a freight train coming. You can't second-guess. You have to get between him and the basket. You're going to get called for the foul or you're going to get dunked on."

When an All-Star center faces that kind of prisoner's dilemma, the game should be impossible for him. And in the end, it was. James was phenomenal in a fourth quarter that traditionally hasn't belonged to him. He never had to make a clutch shot, which is what everyone is waiting to see in these playoffs, but he was dominant. His defense was suffocating. Danny Granger was held to seven points and didn't seem like he was anywhere on the floor. It just seems strange that James' surge took so long. Even at the end of the third quarter, with the game going back and forth, James false-started on a drive, faded away and shot an airball. The home crowd, all decked out in white MVP headbands to cheer their superstar like 19,000 John McEnroe worshippers, groaned in frustration.
Watching James is like watching a Ferrari stuck in traffic. You know what it can do, and you want to see it happen, but the driver just revs and moves along. Meanwhile the other guy, Wade in the black Lambo, veers into the breakdown lane and guns it, well aware that he can pay any ticket.
Is the bar too high for James? Are the expectations too far-fetched? Isn't 32 points in a playoff game enough? Sure. But LeBron James has three MVPs now, and no less than David Stern put his name in the same sentence on Sunday as three-time winners Magic and Larry. James is that talented. He's perhaps the most gifted basketball player ever. But instead of being the gift that keeps on giving, he's the gift that keeps refusing to take.

Man executed for attack on Iranian nuclear scientist

Iran has executed a man who was convicted of killing one of its nuclear scientists, state-run Press TV reported Tuesday.
Majid Jamali Fashi was convicted of the January 2010 killing of Massoud Ali Mohammadi, an Iranian university professor and a nuclear scientist. Prosecutors also accused Fashi of working for Israel's spy agency Mossad and said he was paid $120,000 by Israel to carry out the hit.
Israel does not comment on such claims.
The killing was among a series of attacks against Iranian nuclear scientists in recent years.
In January, Iran sent a letter to the United Nations secretary general alleging that the killings of the scientists were terrorist attacks that followed a clear pattern.
"There is firm evidence that certain foreign quarters are behind such assassinations," the letter said, "It is highly expected from the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and President of the Security Council of the United Nations, as well as all other relevant organs and bodies, to condemn, in the strongest terms, these inhumane terrorist acts."
Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, another nuclear scientist, was killed in a blast in Tehran in January of this year after a motorcyclist placed a magnetic bomb under his Peugeot 405 automobile. Mohammadi and one other scientist were killed in a similar fashion in the last two years.
With no one claiming responsibility, the killings remain shrouded in mystery.
In January, Mohammad Khazaee, Iran's U.N. ambassador, blamed Israel for the attacks.
"They are trying to assassinate the Iranian scientists to deprive Iranians from the right of using peaceful nuclear energy," Khazaee said. "We believe that these terrorist attacks are supported by some elements -- especially within the Israeli regime, as well as some quarters around the world."
Some in Iran have pointed to the United States, but U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has rejected the claims.
"I want to categorically deny any United States involvement in any kind of act of violence inside Iran," she said in January.

Ten persons, including the Divisional Police Officer for Abraka, Mr. Steve Chigbufue, were reportedly killed by suspected armed robbers in Delta State on Monday.
The development coincided with the killing of one person during a clash between factions of the Edo State Drivers’ Welfare Scheme as well as the quizzing of some senior bank officials following Friday’s failed bank robbery in Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.
Chigbufue and four other policemen were said to be on their way to the police headquarters in Asaba when they ran into the suspects who were on a robbery operation at Igbodo in Ika North Local Government Area of the state.
Also killed was an Assistant Superintendent of Police, John Danladi, reputed to have foiled many robbery operations in the state.
In another robbery in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state, a gang of about eight were said to have stormed the Ibusa community and killed four policemen and one army officer.
Eyewitnesses said the eight heavily armed youths stormed the town in a red Toyota Camry and a bus.
They moved straight to raid two banks where an undisclosed sum of money was said to have been carted away by the hoodlums.
When the police got information about the robbery operation, they were said to have stormed the scene where a gun duel ensued.
The confrontation reportedly left five members of the gang dead while the others escaped through Ogwashi-Uku.
Danladi, one of the security officials who was killed in the raid, our correspondent learnt, was ordained a pastor on Saturday at the Tree of Life Church, Ogwashi-Uku.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Charles Muka, who confirmed the deaths, said during the gun battle a Ghana-Must-Go bag of ammunition were recovered from the fleeing hoodlums.
Meanwhile, a disagreement between factions of the transport workers during a protest march by the Edo State chapter of Action Congress of Nigeria over alleged plans by the Peoples Democratic Party to rig the July 14 state governorship election.
The conflict was said to have degenerated to a free-for-all resulting in the death of one Wilfred Omonigho, while several others sustained injuries.
Sources said the police decided to quiz the bank officials to know how information got to the suspected robbers that huge sums of money arrived the banks.

Anolue, UK-based Nigerian, inaugurated as Mayor of Enfield

Anolue
A United Kingdom-based Nigerian, Mrs. Kate Anolue, has been officially inaugurated as the new Mayor of the London Borough of Enfield.
Anolue, a midwife and the second black female Mayor of Enfield, hails from Nanka in Anambra State.
The Europe Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria reports that although the position of Mayor in UK is mostly ceremonial, it places a distinction on a serving councillor who is respected by all the political parties.
She followed her father’s desire for her to become a nurse and moved to Edmonton more than 20 years ago, starting her training in May 1972, eventually qualifying as a midwife.
In an interview with NAN, Anolue said she would devote most of her time to civic functions, including presiding over full council meetings, as well as acting as returning officer during elections.
She said she would also devote her time to giving attention to vulnerable children and young people.
“I will also want to raise money for children’s charities. I have spent all this time delivering babies, I need to know that someone is looking after them,” she said.
Anolue said although this was a big responsibility; it was a dignified and honourable thing to do.
Commenting on the appointment, Head of Chancery at the Nigeria High Commission in the UK, Mr Ahmed Umar, described Anolue as “a true representative of Nigeria.”
He said, “Councillor Anolue is a very dedicated, hard working, committed and passionate Nigerian. She is always willing to serve at all times,” Umar said.
He urged other Nigerians in the UK to emulate her patriotic zeal and dedication to service.
