Barely four weeks of the killing of Mr.
Chucks Ogu, a Journalist with Independent Television and Radio, a
privately owned Television Station in Benin, was gruesomely murdered,
another Journalist, Mr. Sashua Edeghagba has been killed by suspected
armed robbers on Tuesday in Benin City, Edo State Capital.
Edeghagba, a crime Correspondent
with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Bronze FM, Benin
City, was shot dead on Tuesday night by unknown gunmen at number 12,
Dawson lane off Dawnson street, Benin City, Edo State.
While Police said late Chucks Ogu's
death is a case of "mistaken identity", that of Edeghagba was explained
by the Police as a case of stray bullets from a robbery scene.
Reports have it that the late
Edeghagba met his untimely death when he went to fix his car only to run
into a robbery scene where himself together with a Policeman were
shot.
Confirming the incident, Edo State
Commissioner of Police, Mr Olayinka Balogun, said the robbers fired
sporadically into the air to scare away people after alarm was raised by
neighbours who got wind of the robbery.
“There was a robbery incident
Tuesday night and one of the victims they robbed was a policeman, who
the robbers did not identify as so, since he was in mufti.
"During the robbery, neighbours who
got wind of it raised alarm and started pursuing the robbers who at the
same time started shooting sporadically to pave way for their escape.
“In the process, their bullets hit a
policeman and another person who was later identified as a journalist.
They were not the direct target of the hoodlums,” Balogun added.
Also speaking on the incidence,
Bronze FM Controller of News and Current affairs, Mr Olufemi Fulani,
said Edeghagba was killed by armed robbers who stormed the area where he
had gone to fix his car, only to be met by the unfortunate incident.
"There was a robbery operation going
on near the place where Edeghagba went to repair his car, it was learnt
in a desperate bid to escape when neighbours raised the alarm over the
robbery operation, the robbers purportedly shot sporadically to scare
people away, and in the process shot a policeman and Edeghagba", Fulani
said.
The corpse of the late Journalist
has since been deposited in an undisclosed mortuary, while the policeman
was said to be receiving treatment in a yet unknown hospital.
