A Russian Instagram model, who risked her life dangling from a 1,000ft-high Dubair skyscraper for a photoshoot, has been forced to sign a statement vowing to never do it again.
Viki Odintcova, 23, was held up only by the hand of a male assistant as she leaned out into thin air from the 1,004-foot tall Cayan Tower in Dubai in a bid to get the perfect Instagram shot.
The Russian model first tilted backwards over the huge drop, before dangling high above the ground from the arm of her bearded helper.


Her video and photos went viral and was brought to the attention of the local police, who dragged her into custody.

Despite the telling off, Ms Odintcova said the police should have thanked her for highlighting safety issues at the Cayan Tower.
The Instagram queen, who has more than three million followers on social media, admitted that she was a bit nervous before the stunt.

Agony of an Oxford Prof in Lagos

ALL the way from Oxford University where he is a Professor of Economics, Paul Collier, bearded like one of my favourite English writers D.H. Lawrence, had flown down to Lagos to give a lecture on how to develop Lagos into a modern city, as part of the annual birthday lecture series of Prof Pat Utomi’s Centre for Values in Leadership held on February 6, 2017. It was a lecture greeted with a standing ovation at the Muson Centre, Lagos. Governor Ambode of Lagos State was there, furiously taking down notes totaling four pages. Among the guests was the Ooni of Ife who came with his sizeable entourage, dressed in white.

At the end of the lecture, the exhausted Prof Collier carrying a heavy bag was mobbed by autograph-seeking youths who had some questions for him. As the English professor was leaving the hall, a rogue whom he mistook for one of the Ooni’s people asked to assist him with carrying the bag. He handed it to him trustingly and like magic, the thief vanished into the thin air in a twinkle of an eye, with everything gone—money, passport, air ticket and most painful of all, a laptop filled with the professor’s writings. “My soul is missing,” a distraught Prof. Collier told me, a day after. I had gone to interview Prof Utomi for a book I am writing on one of the icons of African business when I stumbled on this piece of shaming story about Nigeria. It is really, really shameful and embarrassing to think of how Nigerians have totally lost their sense of dignity. As he sat there moping and waiting for a miracle to happen, Collier initially didn’t want to talk.

60,000-year-old microbes found in Mexican mine: NASA scientist

NASA scientists have discovered living microorganisms trapped inside crystals for as long as 60,000 years in a mine in Mexico.

These strange ancient microbes have apparently evolved so they can survive on a diet of sulfite, manganese and copper oxide, said Penelope Boston of NASA’s Astrobiology Institute in a presentation over the weekend at a conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

“This has profound effects on how we try to understand the evolutionary history of microbial life on this planet,” she said.

They were discovered in the Naica mine, a working lead, zinc and silver mine in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua.

The mine is famous for its huge crystals, some as long as 50 feet (15 meters).

As a neonatal nurse searched for a patch of skin to put yet another line into her daughter’s frail body, Julie turned to her and asked: ‘How on earth do you do this job?’

‘Her reply has stuck with me ever since,’ says Julie. ‘She told me: “I used to work in an adult intensive care ward before I came here. If these babies were adults, they would have given up by now. But babies keep fighting. They never give up.” ’

Thirteen years later, Julie’s baby has proved that nurse right — time and time again.

From those dark early days when they feared the worst and a diagnosis of cerebral palsy when Isabella was 18 months old, she has grown into a happy, confident teenager — an inspiring feat, especially as Julie and her husband Phil, the former Manchester United and England footballer, were told their daughter would never walk, talk or lead a normal life.

Not only can Isabella walk, run, dance and play sports, she has just achieved another dream: to be signed by a top modelling agency.

Nigeria to face Burkina Faso in London

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Burkina Faso in a friendly game on Monday, March 27.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have been looking to arrange friendly games for the Super Eagles to prepare them for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

According to the media officer of the Super Eagles Toyin Ibitoye, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Burkina Faso in London in March.Before that game, a friendly against Senegal has been confirmed for Thursday, March 23.

“The two teams that the Super Eagles will play have been confirmed. Nigeria will face the Teranga Lions of Senegal on March 23rd and then meet Burkina Faso on the 27th,” Ibitoye said.

“Both games will be in London and it will provide us with a stern test as we prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.”

In a recent interview, Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles Gernot Rohr revealed that he wanted two friendlies against teams that are similar to South Africa and Cameroon whom Nigeria will face for the qualifiers for AFCON 2019 and 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Invisible particles in the air we breathe may elevate the risk of dementia by 92 per cent, experts have warned. Toxic fumes from cars and power plants are infiltrating brain cells, causing them to swell in response. This leaves the brain at risk of succumbing to the devastating condition, according to a new study.

Experts believe that dangerous levels of pollution in cities could actually be responsible for a fifth of global dementia cases. And scientists also discovered the risk was greater for women – especially if they possess a well-known “dementia gene”.

Researchers from the University of Southern California, United States (U.S.), analysed data of 3,647 women between 65 to 79 who didn’t have dementia.

“Microscopic particles generated by fossil fuels get into our body directly through the nose into the brain,” said study co-author Professor Caleb Finch.

Dubai to launch flying drone taxis in July

The chairman of the city's road in Dubai and Transport Authority , Mattar Al Tayer has revealed that Dubai will have autonomous taxi drones zipping around its skyline this summer. Speaking at the recent World Government Summit, a gathering of tech and government leaders at Dubai, he said:

'I am glad to inform you that hopefully, we will be able to have these drones available, starting July 2017.'

The country which plans that a quarter of all journeys in the city will be autonomous by 2030, will have people sit inside the drones without fearing for their lives.

According to Huffington Post, the flying taxis manufactured by Chinese drone-making firm EHang can carry a person weighing up to 100 kilograms (about 220 pounds) along with a small suitcase.

Baby needs N3.5m for open heart surgery

An eight-month-old baby, Mubarak Anuoluwapo Jayesimi, has been diagnosed with symptomatic congenital heart disease.

He requires N3.5 million to undergo an open heart surgery in India. All was well and rosy for Mubarak, who was born on May 25, 2016.

However, that changed two weeks after when his mother, Mrs. Monsurat Jolayemi, became disturbed about his breathing pattern. She said: “After two weeks, I noticed that he was breathing quite fast.

The breathing was not normal, it was too fast. So we took him to the nearest hospital to us in Ikorodu, Dele Hospital.”

Dele Hospital was the beginning of the journey for Mubarak’s parents. There, the doctors explained that their child’s condition was beyond their capacity.

Thus, they were referred to the General Hospital at Ikorodu. At the General Hospital, they were told there was no space and were further referred to Massy Children Hospital, Lagos Island. It was at Massy Children Hospital that they were told that baby Mubarak has a hole in his heart.

Five killed in Melbourne plane crash

Five people have died after a light plane crashed into a shopping centre in Melbourne, Australia.

The charter flight appeared to have had a “catastrophic engine failure” shortly after taking off from the small Essendon Airport, said Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane.

Everyone on board is believed dead.

“At this stage the advice we have is there are no fatalities other than on the aircraft itself,” said the commissioner.

“Looking at the fireball, it is incredibly lucky that no-one was at the back of those stores or in the car park of the stores, that no one was even hurt.”

The shopping centre was not open to the public at the time.

“Today is a desperately sad day,” Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said.

Bhavnalo Kant, 20, was impaled by a spiked railing after he hit a speed bump while riding his motorbike, lost control and was thrown into the air. The gruesome accident which happened near Raja Ki Mandi railway station Agra, India, saw the biker landing on a spiked railing which punctured his chin from beneath and came out through his mouth.
Kant's passenger landed on the road when the bike crashed and seeing what had happened to Kant, he ran to the police station to alert the police.

Drought in Somalia: Time is Running Out

Four-year-old Safia Adan lies in Baidoa Regional Hospital in southern Somalia with a tube through her nose. She is suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration. At her side her worried grandmother looks up to explain that Safia first became sick after drinking water from the local well.

"The water had changed colour but we still drank it," says her grandmother. "We stopped after Safia became sick. We brought her to the city because we knew you get could get good treatment here."

They were lucky – seven people from their village are now confirmed dead and the hospital has seen a surge in children suffering from water-borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea.

They are the latest victims of the on-going drought ravaging Somalia that has left more than six million people, half the country’s population, facing food shortages and has seen water supplies become infected with bacteria rendering them undrinkable.

Arsene Wenger hints at staying at Arsenal despite fans disgust and anger

Trump Organization lawyer Michel Cohen hand-delivered a "peace" plan for Russia and Ukraine to former national security adviser Michael Flynn before Flynn was asked to resign, the New York Times reported on Sunday.

The plan, which involved lifting sanctions on Russia, was drafted by Cohen — a close confidante of President Donald Trump who has served as his organization's special counsel since 2007 — and Felix Sater, a Russian-American real estate developer who has helped the Trump Organization scout deals in Russia.

Sater, a businessman formerly linked with the Mafia who has boasted of his "relationship with Trump," told the Washington Post last May that he "handled all of the negotiations" for the Trump Organization's dealings in Russia in the mid-2000's.
