Max Roach, a founder of modern jazz who rewrote the rules of drumming in the 1940’s and spent the rest of his career breaking musical barriers and defying listeners’ expectations, died early today in Manhattan. He was 83.

His death was announced today by a spokesman for Blue Note records, on which he frequently appeared. No cause was given. Mr. Roach had been known to be ill for several years.

As a young man, Mr. Roach, a percussion virtuoso capable of playing at the most brutal tempos with subtlety as well as power, was among a small circle of adventurous musicians who brought about wholesale changes in jazz. He remained adventurous to the end.

Mikel pays $4,000 to rescue Dream Team over unpaid bills

 yet another fresh scandal, Chelsea star Mikel Obi has had to dole out $4,000 to ensure the Nigeria Olympic team caught their flight to Salvador after the hotel in Sao Paulo held the entire team to ransom over the bills incurred by additional officials.

Armstrong, of no relation to Lance Armstrong, overcame a late push by Russia's Olga Zabelinskaya to earn gold with a time of 44.26.42.

Armstrong turns 43 on Thursday and was the final cyclist to take off and the oldest competitor in the race.

Armstrong retired after winning gold in the 2012 London Olympics but earlier this year decided to make a comeback.But it wasn't a smooth ride for her to reach the Summer Games. It was eventually decided -- a week prior to heading to Rio de Janeiro -- that Armstrong's spot was secured.

Independent athlete wins gold for first time in Olympic history

When Kuwait's Fehaid Al-Deehani learned that his country had been suspended by the International Olympic Committee, he likely thought his Olympic dreams were over.

But Al-Deehani, along with seven other athletes, was allowed to compete under the Olympic flag as an independent athlete -- and he was sure to make the most of it.

Al-Deehani won gold in the men's double trap on Wednesday -- the first gold medal by an independent athlete in Olympic history.

An officer in the Kuwaiti army, Al-Deehani is competing in his sixth Olympics but has never before won gold (he won bronze in 2000 and 2012 while competing for Kuwait).

He defeated Italy's Marco Innocenti in the final match after beating American Joshua Richmond in a shoot-off

Fehaid Al-Deehani won the first ever Olympic gold medal by an independent athlete.

Despite competing as an independent athlete, Al-Deehani maintains his Kuwaiti pride. He was reportedly asked by the IOC to carry the Olympic flag during the Rio opening ceremony, but he refused.

"I am a military man and I will only carry the Kuwait flag," Al-Deehani said. "I cannot carry the IOC flag."
