Motivational blogger Karyn Washington commits suicide, aged 22

Karyn Washington, the young beautiful lady who founded the blog For Brown Girls has committed suicide. Karyn killed herself at her home on April 8th. She was just 22.

Her friends say the popular blogger, who founded the blog three years ago to 'celebrate the beauty of dark skin while combatting colorism and promoting self love', suffered from depression and mental illness for many months before taking her life. Friends say the depression started after she lost her mum to cancer in 2013.

Karyn, who motivated thousands everyday through her blog, never shared her problems with her fans and readers, who were most shocked when news of her death hit headlines. Continue...

Blogger Ty Alexander wrote on his blog
"I wanna pout for a few minutes. I wanna bubble-snot cry. I wish someone had told Karyn Washington that she didn’t have to be strong. She didn’t have to hold the world’s glaring eyes on her shoulders. That asking for help was ok. No matter how you ask for it, it’s ok. People say all the time, You’re so strong! That’s so far from the truth. I AM WEAK!!! I think that’s what has gotten me through. I don’t judge myself for bursting into tears in the middle of a meeting. I don’t judge myself for eating the entire pint of butter pecan ice cream (although I just signed up for Crunch)! And I cannot judge myself for not being able to save Karyn."
Karyn spread words of hope to thousands of women everyday. Messages such as this one, which she shared last year while watching her mother deteriorate from cancer:
"I am empowered by other strong women and girls. Even by those who don’t necessarily know they are inspiring. Women who are doing what they can to uplift others around them and make a difference in their community motivate me to do the same. I think it is so important for women no matter what complexion, race, or religious background to be united in making sure our voices are heard — that we are being leaders and positive role models to the younger generation."
May her soul rest in peace, Amen.

Multi-billionaire businessman, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, is expected to appear before Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court on 5 and 6 May for the continuous hearing of a $48million land suit filed against him by Oba Otudeko’s Honeywell Group.
The Nigeria Ports Authority, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Dangote Industries Ltd., Dangote and Greenview Development Nigeria Ltd are defendants in the suit which has been filed since 2006.
Otudeko is claiming $48m against the defendants as damages for a breach of contract over the 10.8 square metres piece of land within the Lagos Ports Complex, known as the 5th Apapa Wharf Extension.
The suit was first filed before Justice Ramat Mohammed. The matter was transferred to Justice Abang upon Mohammed’s retirement from the bench.
The plaintiff averred that by an agreement, NPA leased the land to him for five years for N2.2m yearly.
He said the land was to be used for the setting up of a bulk food handling facility, adding that in keeping with the agreement, it paid the amount and additional N290,000 for survey, but the BPE suddenly suspended his pre-existing rights, and granted the concession to Greenview Development Ltd. belonging to Dangote.

Pistorius "using emotions as an escape", prosecutor says

* Prosecutor loses patience with repeated bouts of tears
* Sprinter faces life in prison if convicted of murder
* Ruthless cross-examination going into fifth day
By Helen Nyambura-Mwaura
PRETORIA, April 14 (Reuters) - The prosecutor in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial on Monday accused the track star of using motional breakdowns under cross-examination to evade answering questions about the night he killed his girlfriend.
The Olympic and Paralympic sprinter, who faces life in prison if convicted of murdering Reeva Steenkamp, says he shot the 29-year-old model in a tragic accident, firing at what he thought was an intruder hiding behind a locked toilet door.
The athlete has broken down numerous times during the 22-day trial, including retching into a bucket. He burst into tears again on Monday morning when recounting the moment he screamed at what he thought was a burglar, prompting the judge to call a 30-minute adjournment.
"Get the fuck out of my house! Get the fuck out of my house!" a trembling Pistorius said when asked to state precisely what he screamed at the perceived intruder.
He then burst into tears as family members in the public gallery rushed to comfort him

Towards the end of the day, he again began to cry when answering questions about the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
State prosecutor Gerrie Nel, whose reputation as one of South Africa's toughest attorneys has earned him the nickname 'The Pitbull', said the athlete was just putting on an act to avoid having to answer his questions.
Nel questioned why Pistorius would get upset when being asked about whether he did or did not open doors leading from his bedroom to a balcony to shout for help minutes after the shooting.
"I cannot see how that can cause you to be emotional because you cannot remember how to open a door. We're not talking about Reeva," Nel said, referring to previous breakdowns, which have usually been when he describes the shooting.
"You're not using your emotional state as an escape are you?" Nel said, raising his eyebrows and shaking his head.
The murder trial has captivated South Africa and millions of athletics fans around the world who viewed Pistorius, known as the 'Blade Runner' because of the carbon-fibre prosthetics he uses on the track, as a symbol of triumph over adversity.
His disabled lower legs were amputated as a baby but he went on to achieve global fame, winning Paralympic gold medals and reaching the semi-finals of the 400 metres in the 2012 London Olympics against able-bodied athletes. (Writing by Joe Brock; Editing by Angus MacSwan)

Man Kills Roommate Over Cooking Pot In Lagos

Emeka James
The deceased Emeka James
The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 20-year-old man, Ngwuta Nweke, for allegedly killing his friend in their apartment in the Sawmill area of Ebute Meta.
Police say the suspect strangled Emeka James during an argument over a cooking pot on March 22, 2014.
Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said:
“On the fateful day, around 12.30pm, Nweke strangled James who lived in an apartment at Kadara slum, close to Sawmill, Ebute Meta, during a fight over a cooking pot.
“The corpse has been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, while the matter is under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.”
The suspect, however, told the police that he did not mean to kill his friend, but only strangled him in a bid to overpower him in a free fight.

He said:
“James is the owner of the apartment, I only started living with him about a month before the incident. I sell fuel pump for a living at Idumota and I did not have the money to secure an accommodation so James took me in.
“On the day of the incident, I had some stew in a pot and James told me to empty the pot because he wanted to make use of it. I told him that I could not pour the stew anywhere and he should be patient, but he got angry.
“In a fit of rage, he picked up the pot and poured the stew into a dirty container. I also got angry and we started fighting.
“I grabbed him from behind and as we were struggling, we both fell to the ground. When I got up, I realised that James was no longer breathing.”

It was learnt that the deceased was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.
The matter would soon be charged to court.
