Kidnappers release doctor in warri

WARRI—A medical doctor with the Central Hospital, Warri, Delta State, Dr. Ngozi Chukwuebulim, who was kidnapped by gunmen, last Sunday, has been released by the kidnappers after the identity of one of them was exposed.

Vanguard also gathered, yesterday, that the leadership of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, in the state, has simmered down over the feud with the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Otumara, while the intervention of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, averted a statewide industrial action, which was observed by nurses only at the Central Hospital, Warri.

A source told Vanguard that Commissioner Otumara met with the leadership of NANNM in the state, where an agreement to bury the hatchet was reached.

A source told Vanguard that the kidnappers of Dr. Chukwuebulim initially demanded N50 million ransoms before they would release the medical doctor, who was seized on her way from church, but her vehicle, which was also taken away, was found in a house somewhere in Warri.

People were said to have been sent to locate the family of the kidnapper hid the vehicle in the house, while they were in a hideout making demand for ransom. They threatened the mother of one of the kidnappers, that she would be kidnapped if her son did not release the medical doctor.

The kidnapper’s family called him on his mobile phone and relayed the threat message to him and knowing that the game was up, the kidnappers asked for N1 million to free the doctor, but their colleague, whose mother had been threatened prevailed on his gang members to release the doctor.

A text message was sent by the chairman of Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Delta State to members, yesterday, confirming her release. He said she was “safely released.”
