NURSE ARRESTED FOR ABORTION

he police in the Garu-Tempane district of the Upper East Region have arrested Duut Nawang, a nurse at the Kpikpira Health Centre in connection with the death of a 20-year-old female student of the Tempane Senior High School, Georgina Kombat.

The 29-year-old male nurse, according to a DAILY GUIDE source at Garu, was arrested following a confession by a friend to the deceased, Afia, who revealed to the parents of the deceased that she and Georgina went to the suspect, Duut Nawang, for an abortion to be carried out for the deceased.
According to the source, Georgina allegedly collapsed after she was injected by the nurse and died soon after.

After a failed attempt to dump the deceased in a septic tank close to the health centre, the suspect allegedly carried the deceased on a bicycle and rode about five miles through the dark from Kpikpira to Tempane and dumped the body some 100 metres away from the girls’ hostel of Tempane Senior High School.

The police are still investigating the incident to ascertain the level of involvement of the suspect.

The Garu-Tempane Police Commander, Richard Ebo Appiah, could not be reached on phone at the time of filing this report.

Georgina’s body was found at the school around 3am on Wednesday, March 21, 2012.

Georgina Kombat’s father said his daughter left school to collect money from him at Kpikpira, a Bimoba community in the Garu-Tempane district, over the weekend, but had to stay home until Tuesday evening when he was able to raise the amount required for her.

According to him, he asked Georgina to stay and go to school on Wednesday morning since it was too late and dangerous for her to travel from Kpikpira to Tempane, about five miles away.

While the deceased was at home that Tuesday evening, she had a call on her phone from one Daniel.

A brother of the deceased’s received the call instead of Georgina herself, but the caller immediately hung up.

The phone was later handed over to the deceased by the brother and she left home to collect a book from one Bismark that evening.

As soon as she left, Afia came to the house to ask of her but was told she had left to collect a book from Bismark.

Nothing was heard about her throughout the night until the body was found on Wednesday, March 21 on the school compound
