Is Lagos the Most Dangerous Party City on the Planet?

03
it was midnight on Saturday and the club was heating up. Some men were decked out in black tie, others in Ankara print caftans and matching fezzes. They leaned on the bar in double-breasted sports coats and Windsor knots, and glided across the dance floor in high-dollar sneakers, draped in silver and gold chains, eyeballing women of all shapes and shades who dazzled in designer gowns, slinky dresses, short shorts or miniskirts, by turns accentuating or revealing ample curves, long legs or an elegant neckline.
It was my second night in Lagos, Nigeria, and once more I was in a room of clinking glasses and rumbling bass, a room filled with Nigeria’s upper crust bouncing to indigenous Afro-pop. Everything was washed in hot pink. Beams from a bank of rotating lights glinted off gaslight chandeliers and mirrored ornaments behind the bar. Bottles of Dom Pérignon set in buckets of dry ice left vapor trails as they streamed from the bar in the arms of statuesque African beauties conveying them to booths manned by oil or telecom executives, real estate developers, entrepreneurs and their guests.
Many of them, still in their 20s and 30s, were already millionaires, and all of them were hustlers. This was Lagos (pronounced “lay-gos”) after all, and one conceit is that everybody here has three hustles: An oil mogul may also own a restaurant while bankrolling a recording session with an up-and-coming MC. On the street level it’s no different. In this export-dependent, corrupt, dangerous city, whether you’re living high or low, one job never feels like enough.

One Killed, Two Injured as Two Buildings Collapse in Lagos

One Killed, Two Injured as Two Buildings Collapse in LagosTwo buildings collapsed in Ikorodu and Bariga areas of Lagos State killing one and injuring two people.
While the building at 19 Shogbawon Street, Bariga was a storey building, the one at Ikorodu was a three-storey building under construction.
The building at Bariaga last year collapsed killing one person before it was rebuilt by the owner of the structure.
Confirming the incident, the Information officer of NEMA, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye said the buildings collapsed at the early hours of today following an early morning downpour.
He noted that the building had been sealed by the Lagos state government through the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, to avert any further causality.
Farinloye added that one person identified as Joe was also rescued from the debris by the combined team of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) and National Emergency management Agency, NEMA and other security agencies.
He stated that the person rescued had been admitted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, even as he stated that rescue operations had completed and the premises cordoned-off.

Beach parties, movies, and shopping: Lagosians celebrate the New Year

Holiday makers in Lagos on Tuesday ensured that the New Year’s day celebrations were remarkable in the city.
In separate interviews, different people said that the holiday gave them an opportunity to kick back from the hectic life that Lagos has become. One speaker, Ali Yakubu, was grateful for the time spent with his family. Speaking at the Bar Beach, Mr. Yakubu said, “I believe that the best thing for me and my family is to come around here at the Bar Beach and have a nice time with them.
“We are also gathered here to thank the Almighty for giving us live to witness the arrival of a New Year,” he said.
On his part, Yinka Adefeko said that members of his immediate family had a tradition of spending the New Year holiday at the Bar Beach. Adefeko however complained about touts at the beach. He asked that the State Government to pay more attention to the provision of security for people using the beach. Adefeko explained that the rate at which touts were issuing different kinds of tickets to defraud the fun seekers at the arena could cause harm to tourism in the state.
On her part, Omolola Akolade, a trader at the Bar Beach said, “the turnout of picnickers this year is not different from past years because people would always come out to enjoy themselves in appreciation for being alive. But most of them came with their food and drinks. They stop by Shoprite and eateries to get what they need to enjoy while we are experiencing low patronage.”
Other popular spots including the Silverbird Galleria, the Palms Shopping Mall, the National Theatre, O-Zone Cinemas and the Ikeja Shopping Mall were all filled to capacity.

Photo:Chris Brown live in Lagos

The hottest R&B star Chris Brown performed in Lagos on Saturday, December 22nd with a bunch of other Nigerian artistes like Wizkid and others at the Expo Hall in Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
I’m still buzzing from last night’s (22nd December) Chris Brown concert which went down at the Expo Hall, Eko Hotel, Lagos. Say what you want about Chris Brown ( but not on this blog cos we are Team Breezy), Rihanna/Karrauche drama, legal issues aside…the 23 year old R and B bad boy was made for the stage!
I got there late so I missed all the Nigerian acts. But CB performed an energetic set for nearly 2 hours. For part of his set he brought on stage EME superstar Wizkid, who performed the Azonto remix, the crowd went buck wild as the two performed together and even busted out some azonto moves! Chris Brown can dance o! Play anything and that boy will dance…chai!
Wiz wasn’t phased by the fact he was sharing a stage with one of the most sought out performers in the world right now…he held his own, and I am so proud of him!
Asides the dancing, singing and teasing, Chris Brown at some point during his set started smoking weed, probably from nearby bar beach…LOL. He’s such a bad boy, I can see why Rihanna can’t stay away from him.
OMG people it was MAD! That’s all I can remember for now cos I am still recovering from my crazy christmas weekend! But I’ll definitely be keeping you posted with more gossip haha!

22 Year Old Acid Victim Chika Egbo Dies

Sulaimon and Chika
Twenty two-year-old Chika Egbo, who was bathed with acid by her fiancé, David Sulaimon, in Ikotun, Lagos, died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, in the early hours of Thursday.
Her death is coming six weeks after the November 5 attack that left her without the use of her nose, eyes and mouth.
She was fed through a pipe, connected to her neck.
At the hospital on Thursday, Chika’s father, Matthew, stood at the front of the mortuary, looking forlorn.

Matthew told PUNCH Metro, amid sob, “Her body has been transferred to the mortuary. She died around 1am today (Thursday).

“I looked at her about four days ago and realised her eyes had changed. The doctors later told me the eyes were condemned. She really suffered these past three days. I prayed to God that if it was His wish, God should take her life so that her suffering would cease. She suffered so much.

“The police have come to get the necessary details. The investigating police officer said he had to go to the court in order to prepare documents that will authorize an autopsy.”

He added that he wished the process would be hastened to enable him to take the body of his daughter for burial after the autopsy.

Chika’s death coincides with the hearing of the case at an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, on Thursday, where Sulaimon is facing trial for the assault.

At the court, Chika’s family was represented by three lawyers, Mr. Nnabuike Edechime, Mr. Ben Edechime and Mr. Vincent Onwo, who are handling the case pro bono (free of charge).

The lawyers had expressed their concern about the bail granted the accused person when he was first arraigned.

They also informed the court that the victim had died.

But the Chief Magistrate, Mr. O. Olatunji, said the offence (attempted murder), which Sulaimon was charged with, was bailable.

He however said he did not approve his release since he could not perfect the bail conditions.

It was learnt that Sulaimon had remained in custody since he was first arraigned.

The prosecution applied to the court for a substitution of the attempted murder charge for murder.

Olatunji adjourned the case till January 9, 2013 for the hearing on the charge substitution.

Chika, a student of the Enugu State College of Education, fell in love with Sulaimon and had a child for him.

Their relationship had gone sour, after which Sulaimon allegedly invited her to Lagos from her Enugu base under the pretext that his mother wanted to see her.

Sulaimon poured a substance believed to be acid on Chika, resulting in extensive burns on the upper part of her body.

Chika underwent three surgeries to remove the destroyed tissues and reconstruct her face.

Matthew said Chika’s mother had not been informed about her daughter’s death. He said she would probably be informed on Friday (today).

2 suspected armed robbers killed by police in Ikeja

Two armed robbers were yesterday killed by policemen during an exchange of gunfire around Allen Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos.
The killed armed robbers were part of a six-man gang of criminals who specialize in terrorizing customers of popular eateries in the Lagos metropolis.
Two other members of the gang were also arrested at the end of the gun battle with the police.
According to reports, four cut-to-size double barrel guns and 20 live ammunition were recovered from the robbers.
The robbers were said to be in the process of attacking a popular eatery around Ikeja when the police got a distress call and quickly positioned themselves to secure the area.
Lagos State Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ngozi Braide, confirmed the report saying two other members of the gang escaped with bullet wounds.
She urged members of public to be on alert and always report suspicious movement around their areas to the police.
