Bali earthquake: 'Scary' 7-magnitude tremor hits Indonesia sparking fear of tsunami


A large earthquake has struck the holiday island of Bali, sparking fears of a tsunami.

Initial reports from the Indonesian island say the magnitude of the quake is 7 on the Richter scale, and terrified tourists have described fleeing to safety.


Model Christine Teigen, who is in Bali with husband John Legend, posted on Twitter in the aftermath of the tremor: "Bali. Trembling. So long."

She had moments earlier written: "MASSIVE earthquake."

And her tweets continued: "Oh man. We are on stilts. It felt like a ride. 15 solid seconds of 'hooooooly s*** this is happening'".

There are no details yet about casualties or damage caused by the earthquake, which happened at around 7.45pm local time.

People have shared their experiences on social media.



Writing to Mirror Online from the town of Ubud in Bali, Kate Dunlop said people had started to run out into the street.
She wrote: "It was scary seeing everyone flee like that. In the street, we could still feel the earth trembling under our feet. As I type, we are now experiencing a little aftershock."
And Cally Charles, who is in Jimbaran on the island with her boyfriend, told Mirror Online that she was in a lift when it happened.
She said: "The whole lift was shaking!
"We got to the top level of our hotel (rooftop bar) people were holding onto tables and chairs.
"We ran down the stairs to the lobby where loads of people were stood outside. It was the scariest moment of my life!!"
Terrified tourists also shared their experiences on social media.
Teresa Palmer posted on Twitter: "Woah! Anyone else feel that earthquake in Bali? Hope everyone is okay. Staying in a treehouse and we were SWAYING!"
And Natasha Hussain wrote: "Earthquake in Bali for one minute, at around 7:45pm local time. We were in the car, road was jammed. Everyone ran out of their cars to the side of the road. Nervous atmosphere."
Another Bali resident posted: "Back in the house now. That was an attention getter. Strongest quake we’ve felt in the 13 years we’ve been here. Much stronger than the last one in Lombok that we felt in Bali Hope everyone in Lombok is safe."
The United States Geological Survey has said it was a 7-magnitude quake which struck at Indonesia's Lombok island, sending tremors across the region.
The tsunami warning issued in the aftermath covers North Lombok, East and North Bali, the north side of East Java, Southeast Madura, South Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi.
