American boy wakes up after being declared brain dead

Trenton McKinley is on the road to recovery despite a horrific accident

A 13-year-old boy who suffered skull fractures in an accident and was declared brain dead by doctors regained consciousness after being declared dead and his parents signed paperwork to donate his organs to save five other children.

Trenton McKinley is now recovering at home in Alabama.

He was taken to hospital in March when a utility trailer he was riding turned over and crushed his head. He suffered severe brain trauma and seven skull fractures.

At one, his mother was told he would not recover.

"He was dead a total of 15 minutes," Jennifer Reindl told CBS News. "All I saw was a stretcher with his feet.

"They actually stapled that side shut so they could get him back breathing. When he came back they said he would never be normal again."

She added that she agreed to sign donation papers when she was told her son's organs could save five lives.

"We said yes, that also ensured that they would continue to keep Trenton alive to clean his organs for the donation," she added.

"The next day he was scheduled to have his final brain wave test to call his time of death, but his vitals spiked so they cancelled the test."

Now Trenton is on the road to recovery although he will need multiple rounds of surgery to rebuild his skull and still suffers seizures.

He said he believed he was in heaven while he was unconscious.

"There's no other explanation but God," he said. "There's no other way that I could have came back."
