Brilliant medical student found dead in halls just months after starting dream degree at Oxford University
A superfit medical student has been found dead just months after starting a dream degree at Oxford University .
Tributes have been paid to Isobel Mogg, known as Issie, 19, after she died suddenly and unexpectedly in her college halls of residence.
The "very special" student, who ran for east Wales, had won a place at the university after achieving four A* A-levels and passing an interview.
But she was found dead last month at New College, Oxford, whose former students include actor Hugh Grant, playwright Dennis Potter and chef Rick Stein.
Her family are not disclosing her cause of death but the university confirmed it was "unexplained but not suspicious."
Her parents Di and Steve, and sisters Alex, 21, and Sadie, 17, were described as devastated after her death.
Her family said: "Issie was in her first year at New College and had embraced every aspect of university life and from studying with her wonderful group of medics to learning how to row and had made so many friends within such a short space of time.
"Issie's love of sport from a young age meant that she had the opportunity of competing at many sports; swimming enabled her to compete at all levels including Welsh championships and she continued to do early morning swims during her A-level studies.
"Running was another sport that Issue loved and she competed at both track and cross country representing East Wales. She had continued to run at New College and this combined with rowing gave her a huge amount of pleasure.
"We have been overwhelmed and deeply touched by the tributes paid to Issie and the love and support given to us as a family. Issie was an inspiration to all those she know and the positivity and zest for life she showed was a reflection of how Issie was each and every day.
"She had a wonderful attitude to life and learning and will be deeply missed by her family, friends and the many people whose hearts she touched."
Issie was a member of Brecon Athletic Club where she managed to compete at a high level whilst juggling her time to study for her exams.
Derek Osborne, a club member, said: "Issie ran cross country, track and road for the club regularly between 2012 and late 2016 before easing back to concentrate on her A levels.
"Without doubt Issie was one of the most pleasant, humorous and committed athletes that we have ever had in our club. Issie will be sorely missed by fellow athletes and coaches and our thoughts are with her family."
Oxford's New College warden, Miles Young, said: "We are shocked and stricken by this loss. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Issie's family, and to all who knew her.
"The college has come together to help her many friends here cope with their grief. Issie was a giver. She contributed so much in her brief time here, and we are conscious that we have lost someone very special."
She died on January 26 and a service will take place In Issie's home town of Crickhowell, South Wales, at St Edmund's Church on February 23.
New College President Conleth Burns said: "Issie brought people together with her laugh, her smile and her love for those around her. Issie touched many hearts at New College."
