For pleading guilty to stabbing her husband to death with a kitchen knife over Premier Lotto tickets, popularly called Baba Ijebu, Justice Josephine Oyefeso of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced a 29-year-old housewife, Onyinyechi Akunne, to seven years imprisonment.
The convict, Onyinyechi, was said to have stabbed her 35-year-old husband, Abuchi Akunne, with a kitchen knife during an argument on March 28, 2015 at their residence located at No. 85, Idimu Road, Ejigbo, Lagos.
She was initially charged for murder but was commuted to a charge of grievous bodily harm and pleaded guilty to it.While delivering judgment, Justice Oyefeso rejected a clause in the plea bargain agreement where it was proposed that the housewife should serve a sentence of community service instead of a prison term.
The judge said, “in view of the defendant’s plea of guilty, I find her guilty of one count of grievous bodily harm and I hereby sentence her to seven years imprisonment starting from the March 28, 2015 when she was sent to prison.
Prior to sentencing, her counsel, Mrs. P.O. Onu, pleaded for mercy, stated that “the defendant is a first time offender and a mother to a toddler, which she birthed while in prison custody. Her daughter is a year and seven months old and still had a lot to offer to the society.”
Justice Josephine ordered that the convict’s daughter, be removed from the female prison and be kept in the custody of relatives after she’s weaned. The prosecution counsel, Mrs. C.K. Tuiyi-Carena, had told the court that “on the day of the alleged murder, Onyinyechi was preparing a meal while Abuchi was sitting on a chair in their home looking at his ‘Baba Ijebu’ lottery tickets.
“Angered by her husband’s action, Onyinyechi scolded him for his love for gambling and a fight ensued between them. She took the kitchen knife she was using to cut vegetables and stabbed her husband fatally in the chest. The stabbing inflicted a deep cut in Abuchi’s chest, which led to excessive blood loss and his eventual death.”
