52 car racers bag 6-month jail terms in Kano

Fifty two car racers in Kano have been summarily sentenced to six months imprisonment for attacking policemen.
The Kano State Police Command had earlier charged the 52 youths to court for pelting police officers who attempted to stop them from participating in car race during the just concluded New Year celebrations.
A statement by the spokesman of the command, Magaji Majiya, said the youths were arrested along Zoo Road area of the city in the early hours of January 1, planning “deadly car races”.

“On 01/01/2017 at about 0005hrs these youth converged to commence car racing along Zoo Road Kano but on seeing the deployed Policemen along the road, they started pelting them with stones. 52 suspects were arrested and two cars confiscated to the police station,” Mr. Majia, a DSP, said.
He added that “all the suspects were charged to court, where they pleaded guilty and (were) summarily convicted to six months imprisonment or a fine of N10,000 each”.
He said the Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Yusuf, has warned against violating the laws of the state, adding that car races were banned in order to protect lives and property of the citizens.
