He was playing at the Stadium of Light, but it was five-year-old Bradley Lowery's smile that lit up the night.
The Sunderland fan, who is fighting terminal cancer, enjoyed a night to remember as he smashed a penalty past Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in the warm up to last night's Premier League match. The bravery of young Bradley, from Hartlepool, who has been struck down by neuroblastoma for a second time has struck a chord across the country.
After beating the disease in 2013, it returned in June this year and doctors now say tragically he has only months to live.
But refusing to be beaten, Bradley beamed as he was invited to be a special mascot at Sunderland on Wednesday night.
He met players including Diego Costa, Jermain Defoe and Cesc Fabregas.
And after smashing the ball past Begovic, he led the Black Cats out to rapturous applause.
The scorecard displayed the back of a Sunderland shirt with 'Lowery' and the number five on it.
And fans of both sides paid an emotional tribute by joining together to sing “there’s only one Bradley Lowery" at the five-minute mark.
Clubs across the country have shown their support with Everton donating £200,000 towards his treatment back in September.
Chelsea ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Cesc Fabregas' goal.
