History was made in Geneva this week as Christie’s and Sotheby’s auctioned off two important diamonds—the Oppenheimer Blue and the Unique Pink. The resulting price of each shattered auction records for colored diamonds.
After 25 minutes of bidding today, Christie’s Geneva sold the 14.62-carat Oppenheimer Blue, the largest and arguably the highest-quality fancy blue diamond ever to come to auction. It sold for $57.5 million, surpassing its $45 million estimated price and eclipsing the previous auction record ($48.5 million) set by another blue diamond, the Blue Moon of Josephine, last November.
On May 17, Sotheby’s Geneva sold the 15.38-carat, pear-shaped Unique Pink for $31.6 million, making it the most expensive fancy vivid pink diamond ever to sell at auction. The diamond was sold to a private buyer from Asia who placed the winning bid over the telephone. (christies.com; sothebys.com)
