A brutal stabbing in a famous art gallery was mistaken for a dramatic installation piece by witnesses.
A woman was stabbed in the arm and neck by a woman with a utility knife during a fight at Art Basel Miami Beach in Florida, on Friday.
The attack happened close to an installation by Miami artist Naomi Fisher and partner Agatha Wara.
The artist was at her exhibit at the time, and told the Miami Herald she heard a scuffle and later saw a woman being wheeled away by paramedics.
But people she spoke to in the aftermath told her they initially thought the stabbing had been part of the show.
"A guy walked up to me and said, ‘I thought I saw a performance, and I thought it was fake blood, but it was real blood,’” Fisher said.
The paper also reported others believing the police tape cordoning the crime scene was an installation.
Art Basel Miami Beach spokeswoman Sara Fitzmaurice said in an email to The Associated Press Friday, “The attack was an isolated incident that was immediately secured. Our thoughts are with the victim.”Art Basel Miami Beach is the extension of the annual contemporary art fair in Basel, Switzerland, and is attended by thousands.
Miami Beach Detective Kathleen Prieto said the victim is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Siyuan Zhao, 24, from New York, has been charged with attempted murder.
Detail's of Zhao's arrest sheet were tweeted by WPLG reporter Liane Morejon , which claimed she shouted "I had to kill her and two more! I had to watch her bleed!" as she was patted down by police officer
