A mother charged with murdering her three-week-old son after allegedly throwing it out of a fourth-floor window claimed an "evil spirit took over the child's body".
Rashida Chowdhury's shocking admission was revealed by prosecutors when she was appeared in court on Saturday night charged with murder.
Prosecutors in Queens, New York, said Chowdhury, 21, confessed to throwing tiny Rizwan Ahmad out the window of her Richmond Hill Apartment in a crazed bid to save him from an evil spirit.
Chowdhury, who wore a blue t-shirt and a blank expression, was remanded in custody with bail and placed on suicide watch.
The New York News reports one family member broke down in tears in the courtroom as Chowdhury left.
Chowdhury was arrested one day after her child was discovered in the courtyard below their 115th St. apartment, police said.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said: “This a truly horrific and disturbing case of a mother accused of killing her helpless infant son.
“He fell more than 40 feet to the pavement and died. The alleged actions of the defendant are totally incomprehensible.”
Little Rizwan, wearing his blue and white onesie, died at the scene.
Police were investigating whether the mum was battling post-natal depression in the days after the boy’s delivery, according to sources.
If convicted of murder, Chowdhury faces up to life in prison. She was charged with two murder counts - intentional murder, and murder of a victim under the age of 11.
Shortly before the arrest was announced, the city medical examiner ruled the victim’s death was a homicide.
The child was killed by “blunt impact of head and torso with skull fractures,” the medical examiner said on Friday.
