Jose Mourinho has stood by his criticism of Eva Carneiro in his pre-match press conference ahead of the sides tough away trip to Manchester City.
In light of the recent criticism from Premier League managers and doctors alike, the Chelsea boss addressed the issue during his pre-match press conference.
‘First of all I want to say I have a fantastic medical department led by Dr Paco Biosca, I have a good relationship with them.‘ Mourinho said as he was reading out a ready prepared statement.
‘They tell me they have never been praised as much as they have done by me in the last couple of years.’
“Dr Jon Fearn and Dr Eva Carneiro will not be on the bench, but doesn’t mean for the rest of the season,” he said.
“My decision does not mean they won’t be on the bench in the future.
“If you want to speak to me about football, I’m here. If you want to ask about other things, I’m not here.”
The Chelsea boss removed Carneiro and fellow doctor Jon Fearn from the match-day staff after they ran onto the pitch to treat Eden Hazard without Mourinho’s permission.
Although the law clearly states that this is what every doctor must do, when requested by a referee or player, Mourinho remained furious.
He said: “Jon Fearn and Dr Carneiro will not be on the bench, but that doesn’t mean they cannot be in the future. It is my decision.”
When asked if he regretted taking such a harsh line with Carneiro, Mourinho said he had an “open relationship” with his medical staff that was “open to disagreement.”
Football’s governing body FIFA have also gone public in their disgust at the medical department's treatment by Mourinho.
Professor Jiri Dvorak, who is the chief medical officer for FIFA, said that managers had no right to tell their staff whether they could go onto the pitch to treat a player.
Carneiro herself took publicly to Facebook about the incident saying: “I would like to thank the general public for their overwhelming support. Very much appreciated.”
