A woman who shot her attacker dead may have inadvertently killed a serial killer, police have said.
Neal Falls died last week after being shot with his own gun by a sex worker he had tried to strangle, American media reported.
Now officers in Charleston, West Virginia, believe 45-year-old Falls may have been responsible for the murders of several female escorts in the past year.
In an interview with Oregon TV station KPTV, the would-be victim said Falls turned up at her home after answering an escort ad she had placed.
"I knew he was there to kill me," the woman said. "I could tell that he had already done something because he said that he was going to prison for a long time. And that's when I knew he was gonna kill me."
The woman told the station she escaped by reaching for a rake as Falls strangled her, causing him to drop his gun.
She grabbed the gun and shot him.
When police arrived they found a potential "kill list" in Falls' pocket - a list of names of sex workers who all advertised on the same escort website.
Police also released an image of the "kill kit" found in the back of Falls' Suburu - including knives, axes, a machete and cleaning products.
A Charleston police spokesman told the Huffington Post: "We have been able to locate most of them and they were all on a website advertising for escort services.
"The stuff that we found is so alarming that we want law enforcement across the country to be aware of it.”
It is believed Falls, from Oregon, worked as a security guard but did not have any previous criminal convictions.
Police will now enter Falls' DNA into the national crime database to see if any matches are found.
At least six women - all with a history of drug addiction and sex work - have gone missing from the town of Chillicothe, Ohio in the past year, according to the Washington Post.
Four of their bodies have been found, almost all of them dumped in nearby streams and creeks.
