PASSERBYS in the Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg were subjected to a spectacle earlier today when a woman stripped naked and hugged the statue of Madiba as a way of paying tribute to the icon.
Nelson Mandela, the world's most popular man over the last century, passed away in December last year and just before his death, a statue was erected in his honour. Placed in the Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg, the statue attracts a lot of visitors on a daily basis and a tourist resort has built up around it.
Today, a young African woman shocked other tourists and local people when she stripped stark naked and leant against the statue. According to staff working at nearby restaurants, the woman’s actions, caused a huge frenzy.
Male waiters got their orders wrong and a male customer was hit on the head by his wife for getting up to take a closer look. Nelson Mandela Square marketing manager Megan Meas, said a security guard had asked the woman to put on her clothes, which she did before leaving the square without answering any questions.
Ms Meas said: “This was an unauthorised incident conducted by a private citizen in her personal capacity on our property.”
Khotso Tladi, a chef at the nearby Baglios restaurant, added: “She didn’t have a nice body, everything was saggy and she had hair. Afroman was better.”
It does not appear that the woman was charged with any offence and her whereabouts are currently unknown. After she was left the square, life returned to normal with tourists taking pictures of the statue as usual.
