The shooter who left five dead and eight wounded  at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Friday has been identified as 26 year old, Esteban Santiago. An Iraq war veteran, who had been discharged from the Alaska Army National Guard last August for unsatisfactory performance.

The suspect, according to eye witnesses reportedly retrieved a gun from a checked bag, walked into the airport bathroom to load it, walked back out  and started shooting without saying a word.
A fellow passenger said he had gotten into an argument with a passenger on one leg of his trip from Alaska, which ended with a Delta flight to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, according to a CBS News report that quoted federal law enforcement sources.

His brother told AP that he had been receiving mental support from a facility in Alaska.

Scientists find the source of the most mysterious message in the universe

vla.jpg
A mysterious signal coming from deep in the universe has finally been traced to its source.
Fast Radio Bursts, or FRBs, have only been heard 18 times and have been a puzzle to scientists since they were detected in 2007. Nobody knows where they could be coming from or how they might be triggered, with speculation ranging from a huge star, jets of material shooting out of a black hole – or even aliens.
FRBs are powerful but very short radio waves, which last no more than a millisecond.
The first was found by Australia's Parkes telescope in 2007. Since then, 17 have been heard, but only one of them has been heard repeatedly.

Queen 'nearly shot' by Buckingham Palace guard while walking late at night

the-queen-getty-2.jpg
It is one of the perks of being a member of the archaic hereditary UK monarchy that you have armed guards watching over you at all hours.
But that apparently almost backfired for the Queen when she decided to take a late-night walk around the palace grounds and came close to being shot.
From time to time her majesty is said to struggle to sleep. During a spell of insomnia, the 90-year-old will occasionally put on her coat and go for a short stroll, an ex-guardsman told The Times.Late one night, he said he was patrolling inside the perimeter of the Palace walls when he spotted a figure in the darkness.
Thinking that he had caught a potentially dangerous intruder, sneaking into the Royal residence at 3am, he shouted: “Who’s that?”
But to his surprise, it was actually the Queen.
“Bloody hell, Your Majesty, I nearly shot you,” he is reported to have said, on impulse.

Young woman and her fiancé doused with acid by vindictive ex two months to their wedding

Sa Sokha had dreams of being an Apsara dancer, and her March wedding was all planned out. But the 18-year-old now wonders if that future is possible after a cruel acid attack left half of her face badly burned.

On Monday, January 2, she and her fiancé, Welder Kea Samnang, 22, fell prey to a vindictive attack, allegedly carried out by Samnang’s former lover, Pach Chansereiroth, 25.

Heng Chakrya, a plastic surgeon at Preah Kossamak Hospital, said Sokha sustained severe acid burns to the right side of her face and injuries to her back and chest. Samnag was being treated for serious injuries to his head, back and chest.

Today on her hospital bed, she lies flat in “Hello Kitty” pajamas, her face is swathed in white bandages with small gaps for her mouth and eyes.

'It is still painful,” she said, quietly. She hasn’t had anything to eat since the attack on Monday.
"I cannot speak much or it will hurt my mouth."
Sokha’s desire for a career in traditional dancing, with its emphasis on grace and beauty, has dwindled to only half-hopes.

Top US spy chiefs will testify in Congress Thursday on alleged Russian interference in the US election as President-elect Donald Trump continued to question intelligence that Moscow was behind the hacking of Democratic party computers.
The American public could get a better idea of the strength of the evidence on the alleged hacking as the Senate Armed Services Committee holds a hearing led by strong Russia critic John McCain, who on Wednesday called Moscow’s actions to subvert the US presidential vote an “act of war.”
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers are due to testify amid a heated rift between Trump and the intelligence bodies he will rely upon for crucial advice when he become president on January 20.

Trump says hackers can't be caught after a cyberattack — here's why that's wrong

donald trump

Even though hackers responsible for the cyberattack on the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton's campaign weren't caught in the act, it doesn't mean they can't be identified as President-elect Donald Trump has asserted.
Michael Borohovski, a cybersecurity expert with experience working with the intelligence community and Chief Technology Officer of Tinfoil Security, says investigators have methods of uncovering the identity of attackers long after they're gone.
“It’s actually significantly harder to catch somebody in the act than it is to catch somebody after the fact,” Borohovski told Business Insider. “Unfortunately it’s not like in the movies where as soon as someone is attacking, big red alarms go off.”
In a Fox News interview last month, Trump cast doubt on the CIA's recent findings that Russia was involved in cyberattacks against the Democratic Party to help him win the election, calling it "ridiculous" and an excuse for the opposing party's loss.

A top Egyptian government official has killed himself in jail after being arrested in connection with a corruption investigation, reports say.

A gag order on all media over the corruption case has now been issued.
Mr Shalaby's resignation came after a procurement manager at Egypt's State Council, the umbrella organisation for the country's administrative courts, was arrested.
Gamal al-Din al-Labban was charged with receiving bribes worth millions of Egyptian pounds.

Daughter of key figure in S. Korean scandal arrested in Denmark

The daughter of one of the central figures in a South Korean influence-peddling scandal that led to President Park Geun-hye’s impeachment will face extradition proceedings in Denmark after Danish police arrested her on an Interpol request from Seoul.

Danish police said they had held Chung Yoo-ra on Sunday evening in the northern Danish city of Aalborg after identifying her as someone “wanted by the police for extensive financial economic crime in South Korea”.
Chung, a 20-year-old equestrian competitor, is the daughter of Choi Soon-sil, a friend of Park accused of colluding with the president to pressure businesses to contribute to non-profit foundations.
The scandal has drawn hundreds of thousands of protesters onto the streets of Seoul for weekly demonstrations, and could result in Park, 64, becoming the first democratically elected South Korean leader to leave office early.
