An explosion collapsed at least 2 buildings in Manhattan's East Village

East Village Fire
An explosion rocked the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan shortly after 3 p.m. on Thursday, causing a massive fire and a partial building collapse.
CBS New York cites FDNY officials who say 19 people were injured, four of them critically.
The station says 5 members of the FDNY were among the injured.
The FDNY said more than 200 emergency responders arrived on the scene to battle the 7-alarm blaze, which erupted near St. Marks and East 2nd Avenue.
NBC New York is reporting that law enforcement has told them a work crew hit a gas line inside a sushi restaurant and that started the fire.
The Department of Building lists open complaints relating to an explosion for 121 2nd Avenue and a fire at 123 2nd Avenue (built in 1900).
Here's a map of the location:

Authorities told DNA Info that the explosion was consistent with a gas explosion. ConEd shut off gas in the East Village area of 2nd Avenue as a precaution that is taken in any emergency situation involving a fire, a spokesperson told Business Insider. ConEd has also sent crews to investigate the situation.
The explosion caused the collapse of a five story apartment building, according to FDNY, and the subsequent fire apparently spread to two other buildings. City building and fire officials say so far at least 2 buildings have collapsed.
Karen Kolatka was at Middle Collegiate Church on Second Avenue between 6th and 7th Street, directly across from the explosion. "We saw the biggest flames shooting out beyond the roof ...the smoke was almost as wide as the block."
A man who was nearby when it happened told us, "it was the loudest boom I ever heard. There was debris everywhere and people running and screaming."
A nearby NYU student told us, "I breathed a little in and it was complete smoke. It was really bad."

"Everything's blocked from [St. Mark's Place] to 7th" an NYPD officer on the scene told Business Insider. "They're afraid more buildings are going to collapse."
"We heard a big sound, then three or four people fell on the street," Shameem Noor, a cashier at a restaurant about a block away, told Reuters.
"People were running and screaming," he said. "There's a big fire on the roof and black smoke

Twitter just launched Periscope, its hot new streaming app

Twitter has launched Periscope today, the livestreaming app it acquired back in February.
Livestreaming has become a hot topic in recent weeks: Meerkat, a similar app, has seen a slew of media attention, explosive growth, and recently raised $12 million at an estimated $40 million valuation. Twitter acquired then-unlaunched Periscope back in February for a rumoured $75 to $100 million.
Periscope lets users easily stream footage from their devices to their followers. Viewers can comment and send "hearts" to the streamer. The footage can be then replayed later — a key difference to Meerkat, where the footage is gone for good once the stream is over.
A large part of Twitter's appeal is its popularity with celebrities, and it looks like the company's hoping this star power can provide a similar draw to Periscope. "Breaking Bad" actor Aaron Paul, astronaut Chris Hadfield, magician David Blaine, high-profile businessman Mark Cuban and skateboarder Tony Hawk are among those already using the platform.
Twitter has also been limiting Meerkat's access to the network, seemingly in anticipation of the Periscope launch.
Periscope videos aren't integrated directly into Twitter — you have to install the separate app. Greater integration may come later, however. Twitter also owns Vine, a 6-second video app, and the clips can be embedded directly into users' Twitter timelines and viewed without leaving the main app.
Here's what it looks like to browse streams on Periscope:

Jeremy Clarkson could be banned from America

Jeremy Clarkson

The fact that Yorkshire police are investigating Jeremy Clarkson's alleged assault on a BBC producer — which sent the producer to the hospital with a bloody lip — raises an unlikely but tantalising scenario: Jeremy Clarkson could end being banned from working in America because US immigration law prevents convicted criminals from working in the country, according to The Telegraph.
That would hobble his career considerably. The US is the world's biggest TV market.
To be clear, that is an incredibly unlikely scenario. The incident — in which Clarkson is accused of punching producer Oisin Tymon after the latter failed to give him  hot steak dinner — is incredibly minor. It's hard to believe that the police would bother bringing charges, or that the prosecution service would take it all the way to trial.
The case will probably go away on its own.
Even if Clarkson could not enter the US again, it probably would not reduce his appeal as a TV star. If Clarkson went to work for ITV, it could raise the value of that company by £2 billion, analysts say. Part of that value may be tied to Clarkson's ability to promote his shows to foreign audiences — and not being able to to go to America, would handicap that.
The obvious wrinkle here is that Clarkson has already admitted he attacked Tymon and tried to apologize for it, according to the BBC's internal investigation. That admission would make it a lot easier to extract an assault conviction from the presenter, in theory.
And the fact that Clarkson allegedly used anti-Irish language while attacking Tymon ads a little legal icing, too: Assaulting people based on their identity is a hate crime. It could be very difficult to gain a work visa in the US for a person convicted of a hate crime in the UK.
Again, this would be merely the least-likely, worst-case scenario.
In the meantime, Clarkson would be well-advised not to enter the US through Boston or New York, where US law enforcement officials are frequently of Irish-American extraction.

WXYZ-TV reports that two other children, ages 11 and 17, have been taken from the home and placed with protective services.
Detroit mother was arrested Tuesday after the frozen bodies of a boy and girl were found in a deep freezer in the family’s home, police said.
Court officers found the children’s bodies while carrying out an eviction order at the 3-bedroom home in the apartment complex just east of downtown. An autopsy will determine how they died.
Police initially reported a woman’s body was found in the freezer, but later said it was actually the bodies of the two children in a plastic bag.
The boy was about 11 and the girl was 14, said police Chief James Craig who called it a “terrible find.”
The woman was not in the apartment when the court officers or police arrived. “One of the community members here … approached our officers and advised that they knew where the parent was located,” Craig said.
The children’s mother was found in a nearby apartment and questioned. She was arrested later Tuesday. Her name has not been released.
Two of the woman’s other children, ages 11 and 17, were found at a neighbor’s home and placed in protective custody.

Neighbor and friend Tori Childs said she hadn’t seen the two dead children in about a year.
“I haven’t seen them since they were playing with my step-kids,” Childs said.
Childs’ mother, Carrie McDonald, also lives in the low-income housing complex. McDonald said she spoke by phone Tuesday morning with the 36-year-old woman.
“She told me this morning, ‘Ms. Carrie, if you don’t never see me again just know that I love you,'” McDonald said. “I love her. The mother is a beautiful person. She was just going through some things.”
The woman’s four children were not in Detroit schools. Friends said she was home-schooling them.
“She took her kids out of school because she thought something was going to happen to them,” McDonald said.
The woman has lived in the complex at least 10 years. She was unemployed, was having money troubles and had gotten behind on her rent. Friends knew about the impending eviction.
“She was really behind, but she didn’t have it,” Childs said, referring to money to pay the rent.
Court records show a judgment filed last month against the woman for $2,206 owed to the complex.
Investigators were preparing information to present to the Wayne County prosecutor’s office for charges. The Associated Press was unable Tuesday to determine if she has an attorney.

David Beckham proves he's still got it as he shows off buff body in Miami

Hello there!
David Beckham just proved he's still very much got it!
The former footballer was pictured enjoying some rest and relaxation in Miami on Tuesday and looked rather handsome doing so.
Wearing just a pair of bright red trunks, the 39-year-old was showing off his heavily tattooed torso and bulging biceps.
SplashTopless David Beckham
The scowling star was also sporting a very impressive bushy beard and a pair of ray bans.
Presumably in a bid to protect himself from the sun, he also had a white T-shirt wrapped around his head (who needs caps, eh?).
Earlier on in the week Becks was seen touching down at Miami International Airport with close pal David Gardner, who has just welcomed a child with Liv Tyler.
SplashTopless David Beckham
Wife Victoria and the kids were nowhere to be seen.
The star is in town to work on his MLS soccer team plans after announcing last year that he planned to front an expansion team.
He's currently still trying to secure a site as there's currently no stadium in the city

Germanwings Airbus A320 plane crash: Why did jet fall out of the sky? 4 most likely causes

Germanwings Crash
Planes do not crash. They just don't. Especially when cruising at 38,000ft.
So why did a Germanwings Airbus A320 fall out of the sky yesterday and what are the probable causes?

Latest updates on the crash

Pilot error

The aircraft flies on autopilot and follows the course inputted into the Flight Management Computer.
These days the captain, despite having several thousand flying hours "on type", does very little manual flying. Modern commercial aircraft are complex computers, monitored by trained pilots.
This does ask questions of a pilot's ability to control an aircraft manually and some in the industry are looking into an area of increasing concern known as "automation addiction".
Planes are so safe and flying is so routine that pilots get very little hands-on experience. But there is nothing to suggest this in this case.

Mechanical failure

The Airbus is a brilliant but complex aircraft. Even starting it up and preparing it for flight requires significant training.
The fly-by-wire system means the hydraulic flight control surfaces react to computer commands delivered by the pilot's joystick or autopilot.
The Germanwings A320 might have suffered a rapid depressurisation of the cabin, or the cockpit, or both.
This may have required the pilot to quickly fly down to a breathable altitude, 10,000ft, which over the Alps would have been unfortunate.
The black box flight recorders will shed light on whether the aircraft may have skimmed the mountain tops.

Bad weather

Whilst modern aircraft can operate safely in bad weather, a dramatic thunderstorm might just be too uncomfortable for passengers.
There is a small chance of airframe damage in a bad storm but it is unlikely. The plane was on a steady track at an altitude well above the weather. Investigators will look at the weather charts in those final moments.
Pilots would normally radio ahead if they wanted to change course or altitude due to bad weather. This was the case with the Indonesian AirAsia crash in December 2014. They were also flying an Airbus A320.

Terrorism

This was effectively ruled out very early on in this incident.
Germanwings is a subsidiary of Lufthansa and no known terrorist organisation has taken issue with Germany in recent years.
Since 9/11 airports are safer than ever, with multiple screening taking place of both passengers and cargo.
Cockpit doors are now closed and locked at the same time as the aircraft doors. Some airlines require cabin crew to guard the cockpit door when the pilot exits.
No chances are taken and Germanwings has an excellent safety record in this regard.
Smuggling an explosive device on board is relatively impossible in this region. Security is simply too tight.

Suspended Jeremy Clarkson 'will be sacked by BBC today after Top Gear fracas'

Jeremy Clarkson
Jeremy Clarkson
Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson will be sacked after a BBC investigation has found the did physically attack a producer on the popular show, according to a new report.
The Director General of the BCC, Lord Hall, is expected to make the announcement on Wednesday after an internal investigation was conducted during Clarkson’s recent suspension from the BBC show, the Telegraph has reported.
On Tuesday, the newspaper reported that 54-year-old Clarkson will be thanked for his contribution to the popular car show, but that his recent behaviour is unacceptable at the BBC.
Despite the alleged expected departure of Clarkson, the BBC plans to continue to broadcast Top Gear on BBC2, and is already reportedly speaking to new hosts.

The Telegraph claims that senior executives at the BBC have approached Radio 2 Breakfast Show host Chris Evans about taking over the reins despite him insisting that he will not replace Clarkson.
Lord Hall is expected to praise Clarkson for his work on the show and call him a “brilliant broadcaster” in his announcement.
It is unclear at this time whether his fellow hosts James May and Richard Hammond will stay on the programme.
Clarkson is said to be contemplating a deal with Netflix, the home of huge TV shows such as Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards as it continues to become increasingly popular around the world.
Speaking today, the suspended BBC host has said he does not expect to find anything out today about his future at the corporation.

The star has been left in limbo for two weeks since the BBC announced his suspension following what it described as "a fracas" with producer Oisin Tymon.
Clarkson and Mr Tymon have given evidence to an internal BBC investigation, led by Ken MacQuarrie, into what happened and the star's future is expected to be decided this week.
Clarkson left his London flat in a taxi around 4.40pm and when asked if he had heard from the BBC today he told reporters: "Nothing. Not a sausage."

He added: "So I'm really sorry but I don't think you're going to find anything out today."
Earlier this week, we reported that his fate of is set to be decided imminently, according to one of the corporation's senior executives who said the allegations had to be "dealt with in a very serious way".
Clarkson has been left in limbo for two weeks since the BBC announced his suspension following what it described as "a fracas" with producer Oisin Tymon.
Both Clarkson and Tymon have given evidence to an internal BBC investigation, led by Ken MacQuarrie, into what happened and the star's future is expected to be decided this week.
Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper said: "I think if my son or daughter went to a place of work where they were shouted at, abused and someone threw a punch at them I would want there to be an inquiry and for that to be dealt with in a very serious way and that's what the BBC is currently doing."
Speaking to reporters on Monday, he said he thought a decision was "about 24 hours away".
A BBC spokesman said: "No decision has been made. When we have an outcome we will announce it."
Clarkson, alongside co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond, was scheduled to take part in four live Top Gear shows in Norway this week, but it was announced on Sunday they had been postponed.
On the same day, Clarkson described his week as "turbulent" and claimed he was joking when he appeared to criticise BBC bosses during an expletive-laden rant at a charity event.
The beleaguered presenter had appeared to suggest he may be sacked from the BBC Two show and criticised the corporation's executives.
Clarkson said that he was told off by his lawyer after his on-stage speech at the charity gala in north London was captured on video.
But he said in The Sunday Times that it had all been in good humour, writing: "It was all meant in jest and anyway it worked.
"By being brief, controversial and a bit sweary I woke the room up and the auction prize I was offering - one last lap of the Top Gear test track - raised £100,000."
Clarkson had told those gathered at the charity event: "To be in the audience of Top Gear there was an 18-year waiting list. You know the BBC has f*themselves, and so who gives a f***?
"It was a great show and they f* it up."
He is reported to be considering new shows, including a programme about a novice trying to run a farm.
Clarkson tweeted his thanks to supporters of a petition, delivered by tank to BBC headquarters in London on Friday, but declared in his column in The Sun that "protest never works".He wrote at the weekend: "Woodwork tasks today. Being jobless allows you to revisit old interests, learn new things, and listen to the radio more. Sold the telly."
May had previously told his fans: "I've been given some heavy gardening work today. Temptation to cut my own head off with the chainsaw may prove too strong. #StillUnemployed."
The corporation's internal investigation into Clarkson's conduct is being handed over to the director-general, and could be resolved as early as tomorrow.
The BBC has not commented on when the investigation will be completed but it is understood that they want it finished as soon as possibl
