Japan's Ocean Spiral Proposed As Giant Underwater City That Can Protect 5000 people

A Japanese construction company has put forward its proposal to solve the issue of rising property prices – start building cities in the ocean. The famously ambition Shimizu Corporation has unveiled its template for a modern-day Atlantis, a self-sufficient community that sits on or just under the surface of the sea. The Ocean Spiral project envisages using huge spirals to connect each watertight residential sphere to the ocean floor, where it would create power in the form of methane-producing micro-organism factories.
Other rare earth materials could also be mined from the seabed, and transportation to get down there would come in the form of spheres travelling along the length of the spiral.
People – as many as 5,000 – would live in a sealed transparent ball at the top of the spiral. It would generally sit above the surface to take advantage of sunlight, but could be retracted under the waves in the event of bad weather.

If you’re thinking it all sounds a bit farfetched, Shimizu has said the first city could be ready for residents by 2030. It would take just five years to build and cost 3tn yen (£16bn) – with later units significantly less. Shimizu’s Hideo Imamura said:

“This is a real goal, not a pipe dream. The Astro Boy cartoon character had a mobile phone long before they were actually invented – in the same way, the technology and know how we need for this project will become available.”

Floyd Mayweather's Exotic Car Collection

Floyd Mayweather, Jr.'s nickname is "Money" for a good reason. He's practically made of cash. According to Forbes, the flamboyant boxing legend made more than $105 million in 2014 alone.  And boy, does he know how to spend it!
Money Mayweather recently tweeted out photo of his jet along with a collection exotic cars with the words "Welcome to my world."
For those who are curious, here's a breakdown of everything in Money's photo — and their approximate values:
A. Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano — $350,000
B. Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet —  $170,000
C. Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 — $400,000
D. Ferrari 458 Italia Spider — $260,000
E. Floyd "Money" Mayweather — networth est. $280 million.
F.  Ferrari 458 Italia Spider — $260,000
G. Gulfstream GIII — est. $2 million.
H. Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport — $1.9 million
I. Bugatti 16.4 Veyron — $1.3 million
J. Bugatti 16.4 Veyron —  $1.3 million
The total value of Mayweather's exotic car collection is roughly $5.94 million. For a guy with an estimated networth of more than $280 million, this is a drop in the bucket. After all, we're talking about the same guy who reportedly keeps $123 million in a single bank account
Mayweather doesn't claim to be an automotive collector in the same realm as a Jay Leno or a Jerry Seinfeld. Rather, he seems to be a guy who enjoys having nice things around — multiple copies of the same nice things. At the end of the day, driving the same Bugatti everyday of the week would be...uncivilized.

Health watch : Random gene mutations primary cause of most cancer Study (Bad luck' can cause cancer)

Ever marvel at someone who smoked and still lived to be 90? Just plain good luck, researchers say. And those who live like Puritans and get cancer anyway?
That's bad luck -- and it's the primary cause of most cancer cases, says a Johns Hopkins Medicine research study.
Roughly two-thirds of cancers in adults can be attributed to random mutations in genes capable of driving cancer growth, said two scientists who ran statistics on cancer cases.
That may sound jaw-dropping. And Johns Hopkins anticipates that the study will change the way people think about cancer risk factors.
They also believe it could lead to changes in the funding of cancer studies, with a greater focus on finding ways to detect those cancers attributed to random mutations in genes at early, curable stages.
    Smoking can still kill you
But, no, that's not permission to smoke or to not use sunblock.
Some forms of cancer are exceptions, where lifestyle and environment play a big role. Lung cancer is one of them. So is skin cancer.
And, if cancer runs in your family, this unfortunately doesn't mean you're in the clear. Some cancers are more strongly influenced by genetic heritage than others.
"The remaining third (of cancer cases) are due to environmental factors and inherited genes," the Kimmel Cancer Center said in a statement on the studypublished Friday in the magazine Science.
In fact, all three factors work together.
"All cancers are caused by a combination of bad luck, the environment and heredity, and we've created a model that may help quantify how much of these three factors contribute to cancer development," said cancer researcher Bert Vogelstein.
    Compounding matters
An unhealthy lifestyle can compound matters, but more for some cancers than for others, the scientists said.
"Changing our lifestyle and habits will be a huge help in preventing certain cancers, but this may not be as effective for a variety of others," medical statistician Cristian Tomasetti said.
He placed heavy emphasis on early detection.
Stem cells in our organs divide constantly to replenish damaged tissue. Sometimes there are random mistakes in the replication of DNA, small mutations, Vogelstein said.
Some genes, when they mutate, are more apt to promote cancer growth.
"The more these mutations accumulate, the higher the risk that cells will grow unchecked, a hallmark of cancer," Vogelstein said.
Scientist have known this for a long time, but what the study reveals was how big of an influence it is.
"The actual contribution of these random mistakes to cancer incidence, in comparison to the contribution of hereditary or environmental factors, was not previously known," says Vogelstein.
Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, told CNN the study was "good science" that backed up what many scientists already thought.
"This is actually just confirmation of something that we have known for probably 20 years," he said.
"As we have learned more and more about cancer ... we've come to realize that a number of cancers start purely because of mutations that happen that are just unexplainable. Bad luck is, unfortunately, the right way to explain it."
Those cancers that develop have escaped at least three fail-safe systems in the body that deal with these cell mutations, he said; these are programmed cell death, or apoptosis, DNA repair enzymes and certain cells in the immune system.
    Cell division and statistics
For their study, the two scientists came up with an average total number of cell divisions in 31 different tissues within a human lifetime. And they looked at the cancer risk in each of those tissues.
They determined that the more a tissue's cells divide, the higher the chance cancer could develop in that tissue.
"Our study shows, in general, that a change in the number of stem cell divisions in a tissue type is highly correlated with a change in the incidence of cancer in that same tissue," says Vogelstein.
Colon tissue, for example, divides much more than other intestinal tissue, and cancer in the colon is much more prevalent there, the study said.
With colon tissue, the scientists took environmental influences into account.
Doing the math overall, the two scientists arrived a rate at which cancer risk can be explained by the cell divisions. It was 65%, they said.
    Lifestyle
But the researchers drew a line between one group of cancers and another. Of the 31 they looked at, they determined that 22 were basically "bad luck" cancers.
But nine others appeared at rates noticeably higher than could be expected from cell division alone -- which the researchers said is probably due to habits, pollution or genetics.
No surprise: Lung cancer and skin cancer were two of them, they said. Smoking and too much sun exposure are still strongly linked to those cancers.
Brawley said the study's findings should be no reason to alter behaviors shown to lessen the risk of cancer.
"We have good epidemiological data to show that people can reduce their risk of cancer and I would encourage them to do those things," he said.
They include not smoking, managing their weight so they don't become obese and taking physical exercise, he said.
As for the suggestion the study's findings may prompt changes in funding, Brawley said he would be pleased just to see more money go into research.
"Only 10% of the grants submitted to the NIH (National Institutes of Health) actually get funded because we have such a shortage of money," he said.
"We invested in the United States last year $5 billion in cancer research. I would like to see more."

7-year-old survives plane crash that kills 4 in Kentucky

The knock was faint. But, alerted by his two dachshunds, Larry Wilkins went to his door. He opened it to see a young girl, her lips quivering, her nose bloodied, her arms and legs scratched up.
Her name was Sailor Gutzler and, somehow, she was still alive.
"She told me that her mom and dad were dead," Wilkins said. "And that she had been in a plane crash."
The girl's sister and cousin also died when their Piper PA-34 aircraft went down Friday evening in western Kentucky. Even with the plane upside down, the 7-year-old made it out and trekked three-quarters of a mile in the dark through what Wilkins described as "very, very rough territory," mired with fallen trees, creeks, ditches and blackberry briars.
Sailor was barefoot except for one sock and was dressed for Florida -- shorts, no coat -- not for slogging through the January cold of Kentucky. Wilkins got her on his couch and called 911, alerting authorities that a plane had gone down and there was at least one survivor.
Kentucky State Police troopers arrived in about 10 minutes. Sgt. Dean Patterson said the girl was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
"She's a terribly brave little girl, I'll tell you that," Wilkins said. "I can't imagine a 7-year-old doing that."
      FAA: Pilot reported engine problems
The plane Sailor was on had left the warm, sunny climes of Key West earlier Friday, heading for Mount Vernon, Illinois, a city roughly 80 miles east of St. Louis.
Until something went wrong. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen explained that air traffic controllers "lost contact with a Piper PA-34 aircraft ... shortly after the pilot reported engine problems and (said) that he was diverting to the Kentucky Dam State (Park) Airport."
The twin-engine aircraft didn't make it, crashing in Lyon County, about 30 miles east of Paducah, and less than 10 miles from the airport.
Two National Transportation Safety Board members left Washington late Saturday morning for Kentucky, agency spokesman Keith Holloway said. They will join FAA investigators there to try to find out what caused the crash.
Kentucky State Police identified the dead early Saturday as Marty Gutzler, 48; Kimberly Gutzler, 46; and 9-year-old Piper Gutzler -- a husband, wife and their daughter. Also killed was 14-year-old Sierra Wilder, the survivor's cousin. All were from Nashville, Illinois, a community of just over 3,000 people.
Lt. Brent White told CNN affiliate KFVS that first responders "worked tirelessly to find this wreckage and hopefully salvage the lives of those that were on board."
"But, ultimately, it just wasn't meant to be."

Patterson, with the state police, said that members of the National Transportation Safety Board were expected to arrive later in the day. Inclement weather was hampering the investigation, he said in a statement. "Officials have indicated a minimum of two days to conduct an investigation at the scene," he said.
Their bodies were removed and the plane was covered early Saturday morning, Lyon County Judge Executive Wade White said.
Photos from Marty Gutzler's Facebook page showed photos of his smiling daughters, political posts and his family sitting in a small plane with him at the controls. The latest one is of him and his wife celebrating New Year's Eve at a Key West resort.
The Rev. Matthew Wietfeldt of Nashville's Trinity Lutheran Church said those killed -- whom he's known for four years -- "will be deeply missed."
"The Gutzlers were a wonderful family and wonderful members of our congregation and community," Wietfeldt said.
Kent Plotner, an attorney representing the family, said in a statement, "The Gutzler family mourns the loss of Marty, Kim and Piper Gutzler and Sierra Wilder. We are devastated by this loss, but are confident that they rest in God's loving arms. We ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time. Please pray for us, especially for Sailor Gutzler."
Police: 'It's just really a miracle'
How the youngest person on the plane managed to emerge alive also hit close to home for many like trooper White, who has a 8-year-old girl of his own.
"When I saw ... what appeared to be a 7-year-old child that had walked through this dense forest and through some really tough terrain and some awfully poor conditions tonight and survived this," he said, "it's just really a miracle."
Wilkins believes Sailor saw his street lights through the woods and, thankfully, found him -- in one of only three homes in his neighborhood that are occupied in winter. White, the Lyon County executive, said the fact she went that way "saved her life."
"Any other direction could have ended badly with the cold weather," he said.
Sailor was released from Lourdes Hospital in Paducah just after 1 a.m., state police said.
Thinking about what the 7-year-old went through and what comes next brings tears to Wilkins' eyes, he said.
"I just feel so sorry for that little girl, I can't understand it," Wilkins said. "I just can't imagine (going through) that, for someone that young."

photos: girl gang beat up man's girlfriend, shaved her head and wrote 'I got my ass whooped' on her face

      Moment

A teen in Ohio says she was ambushed by six women who took turns brutally beating her on Christmas Eve — then spread photos and videos of the attack on social media to humiliate her.

Cheyanne Willis, 19, says she was pulling into the parking lot of a suburban Cincinnati mall with her then boyfriend, Quincy Gardner, when he parked and pulled her out of the car. A group of six women, including two she knows, was waiting for her and allegedly took turns kicking and beating Willis, slamming her face on a car hood and shaving her head...

Online footage shows Cheyanne Willis being visciously attacked by a group of women on Christmas Eve ...below...
Willis is heard pleading and crying in a video of the incident while others in the group shout angrily, according to the station.

The attackers wrote 'I got my a** whopped' on her forehead with eyeliner and signed their names, the video shows.

Willis is seen before the attack (left) and with her head partially shaved (right) while being treated for for a concussion following the attack

Willis says they took her purse with $50 and her cell phone, then destroyed her driver's license and threatened to kill Willis if she reported the crime.
'I am scared to leave my house still,' Willis, who was left with a black eye and multiple concussions, told DailyMail.com on Friday.
'I still haven't been to sleep— I hate to fall asleep because I have nightmares.'

Willis says her then-boyfriend Quincy Gardner (pictured) took her to the place where she was ambushed. He's been charged with robbery over the incident
On Facebook, this woman—identified by Willis as Cheyenne Fisher—says she 'slapped her up' over a stolen car. Fisher has been charged with robbery over the incident

Willis says she's afraid of leaving her house now and jumps 'at every noise.'
''I wanted to just die,' she told WCPO. 'I really wish they would have killed me.
'I don't want to be here no more, honestly.'

Looks like they hammered out all their issues -- child custody and divvying up assets -- during the delay ... because the divorce was quickly finalized on December 3.

Diggs and Menzel were married for 10 years and have a five-year-old son named Walker.

A source connected to the couple says the break-up has been as amicable as these things can be ... and they've both remained committed to raising their son together and peacefully.

Bodies recovered from AirAsia crash site

The bodies of two victims of the AirAsia plane crash have been returned to Indonesia's Surabya airport from where the ill-fated jet took off three days ago before plunging into the Java Sea.
The two coffins were taken from an air force plane on Wednesday to a military ambulance to be transported to a hospital for examination and identification.
Relatives of passengers and crew also gave their DNA to help identify bodies as they were recovered.
The bodies of at least five other people have so far been recovered and are being taken back to the airport.
Many families have been left waiting for news as bad weather hampered search efforts.
Officials had hoped to recover most of the bodies, but rough conditions made it difficult for helicopters to fly over the area in the Java Sea where several corpses and debris from the ill-fated Airbus A320-200 were found a day earlier.
Stormy weather had temporarily forced Indonesian search teams to suspend the recovery of the bodies of 162 people aboard the ill-fated AirAsia plane which crashed into the Java Sea. Search efforts resumed later on Wednesday evening
Wednesday's weather also prevented divers from searching the crash zone for sunken remains, with waves of two to three metres high and strong winds.
US-based The Wall Street Journal newspaper reported that Indonesia's search-and-rescue agency obtained a sonar image it says may be the body of the missing plane at the bottom of the Java Sea.
The newspaper quoted the agency as saying that the image appeared to show an aircraft upside down in 24-30 metres of water.

      'Worst nightmare'
Indonesian President Joko Widodo said his priority was getting bodies off the bottom of the Karimata Strait in the Java Sea, where rescuers retrieved a plane door and other debris on Tuesday, so victims could be identified.
"I feel a deep loss over this disaster and pray for the families to be given fortitude and strength," Widodo said in Surabaya on Tuesday after grim images of the scene in the Java Sea were broadcast on television.
Widodo said AirAsia would pay an immediate advance of money to relatives, many of whom collapsed in grief when they saw the television pictures of debris and a body.
AirAsia Chief Executive Tony Fernandes has described the crash as his "worst nightmare".
At least 30 ships and 21 aircraft from Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and the United States have been involved in the search.
Flight QZ8501 went missing after air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft while travelling to Singapore from Surabaya in East Java on Sunday.
Shortly before disappearing, AirAsia said the pilot of the plane had asked permission from air traffic control to change course and climb above bad weather in an area noted for severe thunderstorms.
The airline said most of the passengers on board Flight QZ8501 were Indonesians, with three South Koreans and one person each from Singapore, Malaysia, Britain and France.
