Samsung's virtual-reality kit, Gear VR, finally launches

Samsung is making a big jump into virtual reality, and it hopes early adopters will follow along.
The company's first virtual-reality headgear, the Gear VR Innovator Edition, was made available on Monday through AT&T's and Samsung's websites for $199, but only in the US. It launched with 17 apps, including a few from partner Oculus, which Samsung worked with on the product, and a few other games.
Gear VR represents Samsung's attempt to raise awareness and interest in virtual-reality technology, a burgeoning area pioneered by Oculus. The headset requires a Galaxy Note 4smartphone to act as the display and brains, while developer kits created by Oculus utilize a PC. The Gear VR's "Innovator Edition" moniker, like Google Glass' "Explorer Edition," suggests limited volumes as Samsung essentially runs a beta test with willing early adopters.
"Our metric for success is for people to like our product, engage with it and build up daily habits," said Nick DiCarlo, vice president of immersive products and virtual reality for Samsung. "It's not selling lots and lots of units."
DiCarlo declined to say how many Gear VR units Samsung expects to sell.
With Samsung's once-mighty smartphone business starting to dent its profits, and the tablet market cooling, the company is looking elsewhere for an injection of growth. Virtual reality is an area that has garnered excitement, even if there is no clear indication of consumer interest. In July, Facebook purchased Oculus for $2 billion. Sony is pushing into VR with its Project Morpheus headset, intended to be an extension to its PlayStation 4 video game console.
Samsung wants to get in on the ground floor, coming out with the Gear VR before Oculus itself comes out with its own product. And it appears Samsung is willing to play the long game on this bet.
"We're in this for the long haul and it's about getting a lot of lessons learned fast so we can make something that can scale in the future," DiCarlo said.
The user base will likely be limited to start. The "Innovator Edition" tagline suggests the Gear VR will appeal to early VR enthusiasts, developers or people in the industry interested in creating video in that format.
DiCarlo wouldn't say when he thought the Gear VR or virtual-reality technology would hit the mainstream. "I'm not in a rush," he said.
The Gear VR is being shown around at select malls across the country, as well as hit festivals and confabs like the Consumer Electronics Show, DiCarlo said.
Games include Anshar Wars, a multiplayer space shooter, and theBlu, an exploration of undersea life, Samsung said.
DiCarlo hinted at broader compatibility with future Samsung devices. He said that the Galaxy Note 4 represented the baseline equipment required for the virtual reality to work, specifically its screen density and processing power. Future devices, presumably running on superior specifications, would work.
"We're treating the Note 4 as the minimum, and we'll be building from there," he said.

HOMICIDE : Wife Kills Husband Over N10 Tom-Tom Sweets

Detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigations Department, Homicides Section, Panti, Yaba, Lagos State have arrested a housewife for allegedly stabbing her  to death over N10 TomTom sweet.
The suspect, Aminat Aiyemobola, 22, a mother of two, was said to have stabbed her husband, Babatunde Aiyemobola, 40, to death, using a kitchen knife.
The incident, which occurred at 4, Magbon Alade Street, Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State on October 12, 2014, left many residents gasping in shock.
The incident was reported to the police by the elder brother of the deceased.
Aiyemobola was said to have been asked by his  to give her N10 so that she could buy TomTom for their little daughter.
But the deceased allegedly refused.
Instead, he chided her for always buying sweet for their kid, adding that she was teaching the girl to have a sweet tooth.
Soon, the couple started quarreling over the issue.
The argument was said to have degenerated into name calling.
And before anyone knew what was happening, the angry woman stormed into the kitchen and came out with a kitchen with which she stabbed her husband three times on the chest.
While undergoing interrogation, Aminat told homicide detectives that she did not know what came over her, leading to her picking the knife.
Aminat reportedly said to her interrogators: “I love my husband.
“He was a very caring man to me and my children.
“Oga, I don’t know what came over me.
“We love each other.
“We’ve been living happily as husband and wife.
“In fact, I don’t know whether I’m under a spell.
“God please forgive me.”
The deceased was a casual worker with an Indian company in Nigeria.
The matter would soon be charged to court.

Yesterday evening,  Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima led the pack of supermodels who took to the catwalk to strut their stuff at the 2014 Victoria's Secret show.
The lavish event took place at London's Earl's Court.
The renown supermodels dazzled in $2million(N358,000,000) Dream Angels Fantasy Bras.
Each of this year's designs was made by Mouawad jewelers using 16,000 rubies, diamonds and sapphires, all of which are strung together with 18 karat gold. The ornate ensembles pictured above) took the designers more than 1,380 hours to make.

The highlight of the annual Victoria's Secret catwalk event is always the reveal of the Fantasy Bra, of which this year there were two, each of them designed and made by Mouawad for the lingerie brand.
Adriana, 33, wore the blue and silver version of the swanky lingerie, while Alessandra, also 33, had the pleasure of wearing the red bra, which was covered in even more body jewellery than her colleague, accentuating her enviably trim shape, flat stomach and muscular yet lean thighs.
Each of the women - who have been Victoria's Secret Angels for years (Adriana since 2000, Alessandra since 2004) - were adorned with large, flowing capes matching the colour of their underwear, adding to the drama of the moment.
Ed Sherida, Taylor Swift and Popstar Arianna Grande performed at the event.
See more photos below;
