The 10 Thanos Comics You Should Read Before 'Avengers: Endgame'

Thanos Smile

fter a decade of building hype around the collection of six infinity MacGuffins, and a lot of doubt surrounding Thanos‘ ability to meet fandom’s expectation beyond that space chair he firmly planted himself upon, the Mad Titan finally decimated Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Infinity War. Whatever skepticism percolated in your brain as you walked out of the theater, in the moment, when Peter Parker ashed in the arms of Tony Stark, we were all balling at this impossible cliffhanger villain victory. What was all that fervor about the MCU’s antagonist problem? Solved? Malekith is still trash.

Five minutes into his big coming out party and Thanos was already slaying Asgardians and putting the Hulk in his corner. In a franchise built on protagonists persevering despite their failures, the gargantuan purple mo-cap monster delivered a catastrophic climax in which not only the costumed crusaders had to absorb, but the audience as well. The Russo Brothers twisted the knife even further when they closed the nightmare on a contented smile from the righteous maniac. Thanos won.

A year later, and we’re eagerly anticipating the big fix that will return Black Panther, Spider-Man, and the Guardians of the Galaxy to their billion dollar sequels. In a universe populated with Time Gems, Quantum Realms, and Captain Marvels, Phase 3 will not be the end of The Avengers. Duh. The mighty will return, and Thanos will have that smug smile wiped from his face. Of course, yes, we’re all worried about Steve Rogers. He sure does fetishize that sacrifice play.

'Stand By Me' is Stephen King's Most Personal Confrontation with Death

Stand By Me

n 1986, a Stephen King novella, The Body (originally published in the Different Seasons anthology), was adapted into a feature film. This is not strange in itself — King is a prolific author, and his works have been adapted to film for decades — but while he is known as the King of Horror, this story was much more mundane.

Stand by Me, directed by Rob Reiner, is one of the best coming-of-age films ever to grace the big screen. It follows four boys’ end-of-summer adventure before they head off to junior high. They include Wil Wheaton as protagonist and narrator Gordie Lachance, River Phoenix as strong and sensitive group leader Chris Chambers, Corey Feldman as oddball Teddy Duchamp, and Jerry O’Connell as the begrudgingly included Vern Tessio.

They hear a rumor that the body of a missing boy has been seen not far from their hometown, Castle Rock. They decide that they must be the ones to find the body, and that finding and reporting it will make them town heroes. In a move that is incomprehensible by modern parenting standards, they lie to their parents about camping out in Vern’s field and disappear for almost two days to head off down the train tracks. Underneath the heartwarming quest that they undertake are some of King’s quintessential themes; death and grief underscore the journey.

When they first set out, the boys are giddy about their adventure. They sing, joke, and skip as they start down the train tracks. This walk in the woods provides a welcome distraction from their dysfunctional home lives, but it’s not long before their demons catch up with them. The first encounter with death occurs when a train comes along. Teddy stays on the tracks as the other three move clear because he wants to dodge the train. He stares down the locomotive as it approaches, and his friends don’t seem convinced that he will get out of the way in time. Teddy is furious with Chris for pulling him out of danger’s path. Chris apologizes and tells him that he can “dodge it later.”

Nana Olomu in exile, Accra, Ghana, 1894.

Image may contain: one or more people

Nana Olomu (1852–1916) was an Itsekiri chief, palm oil merchant, freedom fighter and Governor of the Benin River from 1886 to 1894.

Born in Jakpa to Chief Olomu (1810-1884), who had 59 wives and 106 children (53 male and 53 female), Nana Olomu successfully prevented European penetration of the hinterland of the Benin and the nearby rivers until he was captured and sent to exile in Accra in 1894.

Nana Olomu's monopolistic control of trade in the Benin River stifled Urhobo traders and Europeans who now have their share of the trade significantly reduced. He signed a treaty on behalf of his people in 1884 that gave the British rights over Itsekiri. By this treaty, Itsekiri became the first protectorate in the Western Niger Delta, few years before the successive fall of Oba Nogbaisi Ovonramwen of the Benin Kingdom. Olomu was oblivious of a section of the treaty which ended the sovereignty of Itsekiri.

Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ gets first trailer

Joaquin Phoenix as Joker

After several films with mixed results, the DC cinematic universe looks like it might just get the last laugh.

Today, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for “Joker,” the new standalone film for the clown-prince of crime. The film is set to be released on Oct. 4 this year, but you can watch the trailer now:

The character
Thankfully, Joaquin Phoenix appears to be giving the Joker his own unique identity. He isn’t copying Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger’s characters. He is also not taking something completely out-of-left-field like Jared Leto.

This Joker has an element of tragedy to his character, coupled with the growing negativity oozing from Gotham City.

For the first time since Tim Burton’s 1989 film “Batman,” the Joker will be getting a backstory on the silver screen. His true identity in this film will be a failing comedian named Arthur Fleck.

Fans may be turned off by adding a backstory to the character (shrouding him in mystery is the usual treatment). However, the Joker himself gave a bit of insight into his character in the graphic novel “Batman: The Killing Joke.”

“Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another. If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice.”

Basically, you should accept the film as one interpretation of how the Joker went mad, rather than the universal truth.

Warner Bros chairman and CEO, Kevin Tsujihara steps down following sexual misconduct allegations

Warner Bros's chief executive, Kevin Tsujihara is leaving amid claims he tried to secure roles for an actress he allegedly had an affair with.

John Stankey, chief executive of parent company WarnerMedia, said that it was "in the best interest" of the firm that Tsujihara steps down. "Kevin acknowledges that his mistakes are inconsistent with the company's leadership expectations," Warner said.

The firm is conducting an investigation into the allegations. Earlier this month, the Hollywood

Tsujihara's lawyer said at the time that the executive did not have a direct role in the hiring of the actress in any movie. In a letter to staff on Monday, reported by Reuters, Tsujihara did not address the matter.
"It has become clear that my continued leadership could be a distraction and an obstacle to the company's continued success. The hard work of everyone within our organisation is truly admirable, and I won't let media attention on my past detract from all the great work the team is doing" he wrote.

SENTENCED TO DEATH: AN INNOCENT MAN STEPS OUT AFTER 24 YEARS IN PRISON; OLAIDE OLATUNJI SHARES HIS STORY OF SURVIVAL, FREEDOM AND HOPES.

HOW IT STARTED.

I trained as a photographer but back in the 80s I didn’t have enough photography work to sustain me so I worked with my father who traded in cattle. My father was an old man so I joined him and I used to go to the bush to buy the animals. I was married with two sons.

That year, as the time for the Ileya Festival drew closer, we were going to supply some companies with cattle so I had to go and buy them from Niger state. He listed all the things that I was going to buy – cows, rams and goats. I left Lagos on the 30th of May, 1988 to Gwari in Niger state. I had to go inside the bush to select the animals I wanted so that I would get a trailer to convey them to Lagos.

THE ARREST.

Because of the language barrier, I needed an interpreter for the negotiations. We were in the bush when some policemen came and asked me if I was a visitor. I said yes, I was a visitor that I had been coming to the village for many years. The man said they were looking for people who ran into the bush.

I said I didn’t know anything about it that I was selecting rams there. Then they arrested me and took me to the police station even though the interpreter told them I had been coming to the village for some time.

The next day, the 1st of June, they said the case could not be handled at that station and it was transferred to the State CID at Niger. From there they transferred me to Ilorin in Kwara state. All the while, I never knew what they were accusing me of. After a week, some policemen came from Lagos, they said they were from the Anti-Terrorsist squad and they conveyed me and some people that were arrested with me to Lagos.

I was with N325,000 cash which I wanted to use to buy cows at Niger. The money followed me up to Ilorin but when we got to Lagos, I didn’t hear anything about the money again. The Police men did not give me or my family members.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad Is a Complete Reboot

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is going to be a full reboot. DCEU producer Peter Safran broke the news when talking about the upcoming release of Shazam! This isn't entirely a shock since Gunn is gearing up to introduce new characters that were not seen in David Ayer's original movie. Additionally, Will Smith stepped down from the project and Idris Elba is reportedly taking over the Deadshot role this time around for what is rumored to be a pretty dark version of the character from the comics.

In a new interview, DCEU producer Peter Safran revealed a pretty significant piece of news regarding James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. Though there have been some pretty good leaks about the story over the last several weeks, there is still much that we don't know about the project. With that being said, Safran says that we're going to be in for a totally new experience.

How Technology is Hijacking Your Mind

Related image

“It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they’ve been fooled.” — Unknown.
I’m an expert on how technology hijacks our psychological vulnerabilities. That’s why I spent the last three years as a Design Ethicist at Google caring about how to design things in a way that defends a billion people’s minds from getting hijacked.

When using technology, we often focus optimistically on all the things it does for us. But I want to show you where it might do the opposite.

Where does technology exploit our minds’ weaknesses?

I learned to think this way when I was a magician. Magicians start by looking for blind spots, edges, vulnerabilities and limits of people’s perception, so they can influence what people do without them even realizing it. Once you know how to push people’s buttons, you can play them like a piano.

And this is exactly what product designers do to your mind. They play your psychological vulnerabilities (consciously and unconsciously) against you in the race to grab your attention.

I want to show you how they do it.

Hijack #1: If You Control the Menu, You Control the Choices

The 3 Keys to Becoming Irresistible

There’s a routine question asked in job interviews, first dates, table games and so on: What is the most important thing you look for in other people?

There’s variations on this format (i.e. “What’s the most attractive quality you look for in a potential partner?” Or, “What’s your greatest strength?” And so on) but, in general, the answer remains the same: The character trait you hold above all. When pressed, I’ve often stumbled and resorted to something trite and probably not true: honesty, humor, confidence, charisma, etc. Those are fine answers but they’re not in my estimation the correct ones.

And so one day I sat down on my pleather couch, brewed some holy basil tea, queued up some Anderson Paak on the Spotify and really, truly tried to whittle down the essence of what makes truly admirable, special people exactly that. I analyzed people I looked up to, people I was attracted to, and people I just couldn’t dream to be without. And I found that the answer could never be just one thing, and that many of the things I think I admire are manifestations of other, deeper things I admire more. Here are the three components that, when taken together, create a spellbinding supernova of a person — one who can command a room and control their destiny, one who can be both altruistic and intelligent. And so I give them to you and make a case for each.

I Had A Threesome And It Was Awkward AF

You can learn a lot about yourself and the world around you by making shitty choices. As much as everybody worries about fucking up… it can actually be pretty damn good for you.

Betting on the wrong pony, throwing caution to the wind--I don’t want to minimize the reality that some bad choices can, um, kill you.

But the ones that don’t can help you grow.

For someone who’s had a lot of sadness in her life, it might seem strange that I don’t have many regrets. I’d like to think that’s because I tend to learn something relevant from most of my "mistakes."

Honestly, a threesome isn’t an inherently bad choice. Yours could be, if it led to something like… murder. I once watched an episode of Forensic Files where that’s exactly what happened. To call that ménage à trois a bad idea is an understatement.

A Guide to Independent Film Distribution in the 21st Century

INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION
Another edition of the LA Film Festival is in the books. Thirty-nine films had their world premieres at the 2015 Festival and 59% of the films that screened were from first-time directors. Audiences applauded and filmmakers left the theaters grinning from ear to ear. But… where do their movies go from here?

Scott Mansfield, Founder and Managing Partner at Monterey Media, an independent distribution company that acquired Runoff at the LA Film Festival in 2014, says most of the filmmakers he works with know very little about distribution. “It’s a foreign world to them,” Mansfield says. “They’re riding high because festival audiences have loved their film, but the reality is now [they’re] facing the red pencils of the critics and serious competition for consumers’ time.”

Julie Candelaria, VP of Marketing at Gravitas Ventures, a leading VOD distributor that acquired the comedy Apartment Troubles at last year’s Festival, says that it’s “a fascinating time to be part of the entertainment distribution business” and that she “[has] an amazing opportunity to help shape the new distribution models and really figure out what works.”

Runoff and Apartment Troubles were two of the 12 films from the 2014 LA Film Festival that were subsequently acquired for distribution. But how does one get that elusive distribution deal? And as a filmmaker, is there anything you can do to give your film a better shot?

From our conversations with Candelaria and Mansfield, we came up with four keys for filmmakers to keep in mind as they navigate the evolving world of independent film distribution in the 21st century.

This one’s not a surprise. The first thing filmmakers think of when they think about how they’re going to sell their movie is what high profile cast they can attach to the project. It’s also one of the first things Mansfield and Candelaria say they’re looking for.

Tooled-up SAS hero led charge into Kenya hotel to kill terrorists and rush victims to safety as fanatics slaughtered 14

A long-serving member of the SAS is seen dragging a victim from the scene of the shooting
A LONE SAS man was hailed a hero of the Kenya terror siege — after storming in to wipe out attackers and save civilians.

He was in the country training Special Forces when news broke of the gun and grenade atrocity that killed at least 21

— At least one other Brit was injured in the rampage.

After getting kitted out, dramatic photos show the hero charging into a building single-handed — Colt Canada C8 assault rifle at the ready — to free cowering locals.

In another, the balaclava-clad elite soldier, whose face we have masked, helps to carry an injured victim. He was also seen clasping a woman’s hand as he led her to safety.

The man — a long-serving SAS member — checked plans with local special forces, directed sorties in the heat of battle and frisked suspects.

Indian Superman of 1962 War- He alone stopped Entire Chinese army and saved Arunachal Pradesh

Real heroes should be treated close to gods as they protect the people like a shield, without caring about their own life. When we talk about real-life heroes who sacrifice their lives, brave sergeants from Indian Army come to our mind. Quite often, their impeccable strategies and pyrotechnics pull off the heist for the nation.

They sweat it out, round the clock, on border from the baptism of fire and they cope with severe difficulties and obstacles in a bid to maintain the status quo loud and proud. Day by day, the respect towards the Indian Army is increasing and it is prudent to say that they are the ‘visible gods’.

The singer’s estranged daughter, Joan Lee Kelly popularly referred to as Buku Abi has broken her silence with a powerful statement condemning her father and in her statement, she strongly implies she and her family have also been abused by him.

In a lengthy message she shared on her Instagram page yesterday, January 10th, she apologised for taking so long to speak out explaining she has been searching for the right words for days.

She made it clear she has chosen to stay out of the spotlight because it’s better for her healing process and the constant reminders of “how terrible my father is” aren’t good for her so she has to do what’s best for herself.

The 20-year-old also expressed sympathy and devastation for all of the women who have been allegedly victimised by her father and makes it clear that she, her mother and siblings don’t condone any of his negative behaviour, past or present.

Abi in her post also suggests that she and her family have not had any relationship with Kelly for years, saying.

Bumblebee’ Review: If John Hughes Made a ‘Transformers’ Movie

Bumblebee, 2018

Ok, we’re not sure, exactly, how to say this. It’s, um … well … right, fine [deep breath]. We’ll just say it.

So Bumblebee is a spin-off of the Transformers series, those Michael Bay movies of sound and fury and volume and lukewarm metal-on-metal action that are based on a line of toys, because cinema. You probably remember him somewhere within the haze of your post–Transformers-movies-screening memories, as very few human beings can recall much from those trainwreck blockbusters about good ‘bots and bad ‘bots, cars and jets, the fate of the world (we think?), etc. He’s the one who’s yellow and black, hence the name. Good friend of Optimus Prime. Hates Decepticons. Turns into a bitchin’ Camaro.

And the movie … it’s good. Not just “not bad.” It’s actually good.

Imagine if John Hughes made a Transformers movie. Or: Think E.T., but with auto parts. Or, possibly: The Iron Giant, stuck in a world where only ’80s action movies and vintage teen-angst movies exist. Or — and here’s where things admittedly get weird — an extension of a franchise not known for anything besides “big robots make boom,” only one with personality, wit, tenderness, imagination, emotional grounding, performances that don’t get drowned out by din and a soundtrack that favors The Smiths over Imagine Dragons.

We know, it’s a lot to process. Feel free to take a minute.

‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Review: Too Many Spoonfuls of Sugar

Emily Blunt is Mary Poppins in Dinsey’s original musica MARY. POPPINS RETURNS, a sequel to the 1964 MARY POPPINS which takes audiences on an entirely new adventure with the practically perfect nanny and the Banks family.

It’s no surprise that Mary Poppins Returns, an industrial-strength sugarplum, doesn’t
live up to the 1964 original; how do you replace the immortal Julie Andrews as the London nanny who drops from the clouds to dispense tough love. Luckily, we have Emily Blunt, an actress who makes her own kind of magic in playing the impatient, imperious fixer once described as looking “like Joan Crawford trying to be nice.”

This sequel, efficiently directed by Rob Marshall, is set 25 years after the first film. But it follows the same beats, including a new score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman that sounds like warmed-over Sherman brothers. There are echoes everywhere of what came before — including a lamplighter named Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), who’ll remind of you of Dick Van Dyke’s chimney sweep Bert, right down to the unapologetically fake Cockney accent. What’s the radical creator of Hamilton doing in this family-friendly escapism? The answer: having a ball. In his big-screen debut, Miranda has charm to spare and throws in a little rap during a number called “A Cover Is Not the Book.”
Set during the “Great Slump” on the 1930s, the film calls Ms.

‘Aquaman’ Review: D.C. Superhero’s Solo Movie Is a Waterlogged Mess

JASON MOMOA as Aquaman in Warner Bros. Pictures’ action adventure “AQUAMAN.”

He’s the laughing stock of the DC Comics Extended Universe — and Aquaman’s solo movie almost gets by on razzle dazzle, since that’s all it has up its waterlogged sleeve. Not that this underwater superhero knows much from sleeves: A shirtless but never humorless Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman, as if he were born to wield a trident. Yes, he looks nothing like the platinum blondie of the comic books. His half brother, King Orm (Patrick Wilson, in for the fun of it), is the one taking on that visage, complete with a dash of Draco Malfoy villainy. “I am the Ocean Master,” says Orm, seriously and hilariously. Ok, then.

But, wait, no jumping ahead. Aquaman is directed by James Wan, the horrormeister behind Saw and The Conjuring who’s showing off his lighter side. He gives the 143-minute film a propulsive drive, which comes in handy when the light dawns that the plot is going nowhere. The movie is an origin story from co-writers David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, that starts out with a man having sex with a fish. That’s right. A human lighthouse keeper, Thomas (Temuera Morrison), working out of Amnesty Bay, Massachusetts, falls hard for Atlanna, the queen of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, when she washes up on shore. Nicole Kidman, of all overqualified actresses, plays her. And before long the interspecies couple is raising a son, Arthur, until Mom has to go back to sea on family business. As for the kid, he’s left to wonder whether he belongs to the surf or the turf.

Nicki Minaj has urged her fans to show more empathy for those suffering mental illnesses after comedian Pete Davidson worried followers with a worrying Instagram post.
Ariana Grande's ex-fiance has often spoken publicly about mental illness, and he offered his support to Kanye West on social media after the rapper discussed his bipolar disorder in a series of posts.
"No one would ever choose to end up in a mental hospital and diagnosed with a mental disorder but god chose me to publicly go through this journey and it is beautiful," the Life of Pablo hitmaker tweeted.
Pete praised the father-of-three for speaking candidly about his mental health struggles, but later shared a disturbing message on Instagram: "I really don't want to be on this earth anymore," he wrote. "I'm doing my best to stay here for you but i actually don't know how much longer i can last."

Right wing extremists being referred for deradicalisation programme rises by a third as Islamist suspects falls

Right wing extremists being referred for deradicalisation programme rises by a third as Islamist suspects falls (file image of far-Right National Action supporters)

The number of people flagged up to the authorities for right-wing extremism has surged to a record high, new figures reveal.

There was a 36% increase in the number of referrals to the Government’s Prevent programme over concerns about right wing extremism. It jumped from fewer than 1,000 in 2016/17 to 1,312 in 2017/18.

The Home Office figures also revealed a sharp rise in the number of children and teenagers being referred to the programme, up by a fifth to 2,009 including 297 girls.

More than half of those reported for possible deradicalisation interventions in 2017/18 were 20 or under.

The rise in right-wing extremism accounted for an overall 20% increase in referrals to Prevent, from 6,093 to 7,318 in 2017/18.

While Islamist concerns accounted for a larger proportion of referrals, the number in the category fell by 14% year-on-year.

“The Rise of Right-Wing Extremism, and How U.S. Law Enforcement Missed It”

Despite repeated warnings over the past two decades, federal law enforcement officials in the United States have ignored the threat of violence from far-right extremists. Now, they have no idea how to stop it.

Roughly 22 million Americans found neo-Nazi or white supremacist views “acceptable,” according to a poll taken after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017.

White supremacists and other far-right extremists have killed more people in the United States since Sept. 11, 2001, than any other category of domestic extremist — but the country’s counterterrorism strategy has been focused elsewhere. Read Janet Reitman’s article for the New York Times Magazine.

A jury has recommended that the man who drove into a crowd of anti-racism protesters at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., last year spend the rest of his life in prison.
