I’ve tested over 100 headphones in the past year, and I keep coming back to this $26 pair

Xiaomi headphones

Last month I sang the praises of the Sony MDR-1A, a $300 pair of full-size headphones that’s stood out from the many pairs I’vetested for being smooth-sounding, good-looking, and so very, very comfortable. They’re not the best, but they’re the ones I’d be most likely to buy.

That said, they’re $300 full-size headphones. Anything along those lines isn’t going to be all that portable. Sometimes, it’s good to have a pair of “beaters” on hand — cheap, secondary headphones you can stuff in a bag, toss on quickly, and wear on the go, without having to worry about busting your Very Nice Thing.
I’ve followed this setup for the past few months, and of the many inexpensive, beater-level pairs I’ve had lying around, the Xiaomi Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro have emerged as a personal favorite. Like the MDR-1A, they have a few clear flaws, but they still feel and sound better than I’d expect from a $26 earphone.

The Pentagon rubbishes Russian claims of joint air mission over Syria as 'propaganda'

The Russian defense ministry has said its warplanes have flown their first combat mission in Syria with US-led coalition aircraft. Pictured are two Russian Tu-22M3 bombers on Monday

The US Military has rubbished claims Russian fighter jets have flown their first combat mission in Syria alongside American-led coalition forces.
US Marine Major Adrian JT Rankine-Galloway completely dismissed the claims from the Kremlin on Monday afternoon.
'The Department of Defense is not coordinating airstrikes with the Russian military in Syria,' a statement read.
'DoD maintains a channel of communication with the Russian military focused solely on ensuring the safety of aircrews and de-confliction of Coalition and Russian operations in Syria.'
The Russian defense ministry has said its warplanes have flown their first combat mission in Syria with US-led coalition aircraft. Pictured are two Russian Tu-22M3 bombers on Monday
US Air Force Col. John Dorrian, a coalition spokesman, spoke out almost immediately against the Russian claim - dubbing it propaganda.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer would not comment on the specific reports, however he suggested Donald Trump would be willing to work with Russia.

Twitter apologizes after @POTUS error forces 560,000 to follow Trump

POTUS44 Screengrab

On Friday, Twitter planned a massive undertaking: The transition of the @POTUS account from Barack Obama to Donald Trump, and the migration of those @POTUS followers from one account to another. Each of these accounts—@POTUS, @FLOTUS@VP, etc.—had millions of followers. With an account transition of that scale, naturally, there were some bugs.
Roughly 560,000 people were not happy to discover that instead of following @POTUS44, the archival account of Obama's presidential tweets, they were still following @POTUS, now manned by Donald Trump. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey apologized for the error, which no doubt was very stressful for some.

A new full-disk view of Earth is live that's 4 times more detailed than any before it

planet earth photo north south america goes 16 noaa abi_full_disk_low_res_jan_15_2017
Below is one of the most detailed full-disk photos of Earth ever taken — and the US government is now downloading a fresh version of it every 15 minutes.
The unprecedented view, taken on January 15 at 1:07 p.m. ET, is four times more detailed than any full-disk view of the planet before it.
The image comes courtesy of a recently launched National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather satellite, called GOES-16 (and formerly GOES-R) — short for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite — the newest of a fleet of Earth-monitoring satellites.
Louis Uccellini, the director of NOAA's National Weather Service, said in a press release that the view is "much more than a pretty picture"; rather, "it is the future of weather observations and forecasting."
GOES-16 launched on November 19, 2016, and orbits from about 22,300 miles (35,900 kilometers) above Earth — a position called geostationary orbit. (By comparison, the International Space Station orbits Earth from about 220 miles [350 kilometers] above.)
This orbit allows the satellite to stay above the same spot and monitor changes in the atmosphere, ground, and ocean over time, according to NOAA.
By the end of the year, GOES-16 will finish being tested and replace either GOES-15 (also called GOES WEST) or GOES-13 (GOES EAST) — weather satellites that launched in 2006 and 2010, respectively.

“I will be having series of prayer sessions for your soul” – Nollywood Actor Uche Maduagwu to Beverly Osu after Video Surfaces of her Kissing a Girl

Nollywood actor Uche Maduagwu took to his Instagram to condemn Ex-Big Brother housemate Beverly Osu for sharing pictures and videos of herself kissing her fellow ex-housemate Mariah Nepembe on social media.
He said:
“Shame! Shame!! Shame!!! The kind of “pikins” born now a days are a complete mistake. They are generations of wastefulness. I understand that some of our celebrities were molested at tender ages, I feel so sad about that because I am against child molestation. In fact, I believe anyone who molests a child should be locked up in a maximum prison for at least 200 Years with hard labor. But let us face the fact, just because your Uncle sexually molested you when you were a little child doesn’t mean you should turn yourself into something else. I understand the trauma and pains, the agony of being abused. I understand the physical, psychological and emotional pains that a young girl goes through, but becoming a lesbian in broad daylight is not something a good woman should indulge in. I know most of our female celebs struggle with lesbianism, it’s like a secret habit many of them have been trying to come out of but can’t. We are Africans, let us behave like one and not behave like imbeciles, the funny thing is that even the lower animals don’t practice this devilish act, a female dog will always mate with a male dog, same goes for Pigs, goats just to mention but a few… But it’s crazy that grown up female adults stoop so low as to sleeping and mating with each other. Please if you have no shame, remember you have so many kids looking up to you as their role models. Practice your lesbianism indoors, and stop advertising your foolishness in public. Anyways, I will be having series of prayer sessions for your soul, because you are a beautiful woman with so much potentials, but if you allow the devil to steal away your grace, you will be miserable for a very long time. #repost #repostapp #reposting#nollywood #regrann #fun #lol#LagosNigeria #model #instagram#fashion #love #nigeria #instapics”

A High Court in Abeokuta on Monday sentenced Kola Akanji to death by hanging for armed robbery.

Mr. Akanji, whose address was not given, was found guilty of a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.

In his judgment, Abiodun Akinyemi, said the court was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the accused committed the offence.

“According to Section 1(2) (a&b) and 6(b) of the Act, the punishment is death and the court has no discretion in the matter.

“Having found that the accused person is guilty as charged in both counts, I have no choice but impose on him the capital sentence as prescribed by the Law.

“You shall be hung by your neck until you are dead,” he said.

He held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was tenable and, therefore, sentenced the accused to death by hanging

The convict, had been standing trial since Dec 2010, when he was arrested and charged for robbing one Fashola Moses of his motorcycle, phone and money.

The accused was said to have inflicted grievous harm on Moses with a bottle during the robbery, which took place in Onigbedu area in Yewa North local government, Ogun State.

The prosecutor, O.S. Ogunbode, had during the trial told the court that the convict committed the offence on December 16, 2010 at about 7:00 p.m. at Onigbedu.

According to Mrs. Ogunbode, the convict and two others had boarded the motorcycle of their victim at Ijaka Isale in Yewa North and told him they were going to Ishaga Olowu.

“On their way, the accused switched off the ignition of the motorcycle. When the complainant came down to check what the problem was, the accused hit him on his head with a bottle and he fell down.

“Immediately, the convict and two others took the motorcycle phone, money and rode away. Unfortunately for them, they had an accident on their way, they abandoned the motorcycle and fled into the bush.

“The complainant recovered and pursued them with the help of another cyclist. They found his motorcycle at the scene of the accident.

“They went to the nearest village where the accident occurred and narrated what happened to the villagers.

“The villagers followed them to search the bush and caught the accused, while his accomplice escaped,” she said.

Cameroon Judge Arrested In Crackdown

A member of the Cameroon judiciary has been arrested in what is seen as part of a major crackdown against dissent.
Lord Justice Ayah Paul Abine was picked up late Saturday from his home in Yaoundé city.
The former presidential candidate is also the Deputy Attorney General of the country’s Supreme Court and an opposition leader.
Abine, who is also chairman of the Popular Action Party (PAP) had earlier been summoned to appear before an investigator at the Secretariat of State for Defence (SED) on Friday.
He ignored the invitation arguing that the legal procedure to summon a sitting magistrate wasn’t followed.
“Six armed men from SED forcefully arrested him from his residence. They had no arrest warrant and when Ayah Paul Abine stated what the law says, he was told he had no choice than to comply,” a family source said.

White House goes to war with the press over dubious claims about crowd

kellyanne conway

President Donald Trump's top officials stood defiant for a second day in the face of withering media criticism over dubious White House claims about the size of Trump's inauguration.
During a visit to CIA headquarters in Virginia on Saturday, Trump asserted that there were over a million people at Friday's inauguration, though independent estimates put the crowd at closer to 250,000 attendees.
There are no official government estimates of the crowd size, but photographic evidence comparing Trump's inauguration to past inaugurations and metro ridership statistics suggested that the number was far lower than the White House claimed.
But Trump officials refused to admit Trump made factual inaccuracies or exaggerations, instead taking aim at the media.

Samsung announces what caused the Galaxy Note 7 to overheat and explode

galaxy note 7 smaller
Samsung says bad battery design and a rush to release an updated version of the Galaxy Note 7 caused some of the devices to overheat and explode in a new report the company released Sunday night.
Samsung said in the report that two separate battery malfunctions caused some Note 7 phones to overheat and even catch fire in some cases.
The first problem affected the first batch of Note 7 phones that launched last fall. In those phones, the battery was too large for the casing of the phone, which caused some to overheat, according to Samsung's report.
After Samsung recalled the initial batch of Note 7 phones, it manufactured the phone with a battery from a different supplier. But Samsung was in a rush to get the new phones out, and the new battery produced by the supplier had a defect that also caused it to overheat, the report said.
In the end, Samsung ended up recalling all Note 7 phones and canceled the product altogether.

US President Donald Trump Sunday discussed threats from Iran with Benjamin Netanyahu, inviting the Israeli prime minister to visit the White House early next month.

The two leaders spoke by telephone and "agreed to continue to closely consult on a range of regional issues, including addressing the threats posed by Iran," the White House said in a statement, signalling the new administration's tougher line on Tehran.
The statement also said that Trump invited Netanyahu "to an early February meeting at the White House."
Israel approved hundreds of new settler homes in east Jerusalem Sunday hours before the telephone call, which an Israeli statement described as "very warm".

Anti-Trump protesters set to flood Washington

Hundreds of thousands of protesters spearheaded by women’s rights groups are set to converge on Washington Saturday to send a defiant message to America’s new president, Donald Trump.
The flag-waving crowds who turned out to cheer Trump’s inauguration will make way for a coalition of protesters who fear an erosion of women’s rights under the new Republican administration.
Powered by social media, the “Women’s March on Washington” aims to draw 200,000 people, illustrating the divisions of a country whose incoming leader faces levels of public mistrust unseen in recent decades.
Trump’s inaugural speech on Friday set the tone for his presidency: proudly populist, fiercely nationalist and determined to break with the legacy of his Democratic predecessor.
His first act in office — signing an executive order aimed at freezing Barack Obama’s signature health care law, before it is eventually repealed — was a potent gesture in that direction, with more such actions expected to follow on Monday.

Trump signs his first executive order and it’s directed against Obamacare

President Donald Trump didn’t wait long to get into the Oval Office before signing his first executive order. And as promised, it was directed against the “Affordable Care Act,” the cornerstone legislation of his predecessor, also known as Obamacare.
According to White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, the order asked the states to “ease the burden of ObamaCare,” but he offered few other details on the substance of the order, which was not immediately provided to media outlets.
The official text of the order makes it clear that it is the full intention of President Trump to seek full repeal of the legislation, but in the meantime he will take the steps “to minimize the unwarranted economic and regulatory burdens of the Act, and prepare to afford the States more flexibility and control to create a more free and open healthcare market.”

Donald John Trump was inaugurated on Friday as the 45th president of the United States.

Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to Washington, DC, for the big event, and Trump has been promoting the inauguration festivities on his Twitter account for days.
Trump signed several executive orders shortly after his swearing-in.
Immediately after his inauguration, Trump delivered his inaugural address.

"For too long, a small group in our nation's capital has reaped the rewards of our nation's government while our people have borne the cost."
Trump attacked the Washington establishment throughout his speech and focused his praise on the American people.
"This moment is your moment. It belongs to you," Trump said. "It belongs to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across America. This is your day. This is your celebration. And this, the United States of America, is your country."
Trump said his inauguration would be remembered as the day "the people became the rulers of this nation again."
"The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer," Trump said. "Everyone is listening to you now."
Trump described the poverty, job loss, and crime that he said plagued the country.

Vigil held for kidnapped photojournalist Shiraaz Mohamed

SA photojournalist Shiraaz Mohamed, who has been kidnapped in Syria. (Facebook)
As the sun set on Wednesday evening, the sound of sirens and car hooters filled the air as a motorcade snaked its way through the streets of Ennerdale until it reached the Civic Centre in Lenasia South.
The Ennerdale Joint Reaction unit and other community members headed towards a vigil that was organised in support of the release of South African photojournalist Shiraaz Mohamed who was kidnapped on Tuesday last week while on assignment in Syria.
His trip was facilitated by relief organisation Gift of the Givers.
Many of the cars, driven by members of the Ennerdale Joint Reaction group, had flashing lights on their roofs and posters with Mohamed's face glued to their windows.
Members of the SA Block Neighbourhood Watch in their high visibility vests walked in front of the cars chanting "Free Shiraz Mohamed".
Inside the civic centre the mood was sombre and more chairs had to be brought inside as over 200 friends, family, community members and journalists gathered.

My Coach Demanded To Sleep With Me Before I Can Represent Nigeria – Moses

Moses claimed that after she refused the coach’s sexual overtures, she was framed up for drugs usage and was dropped from national camp in 2013, while preparing for a championship in Malaysia.
“They said I tested positive (for drugs) in 2013. If they didn’t throw me out of camp and tried to frustrate me, I would have been an Olympian today. Why did they do all these? Because Gloria Moses is a stubborn lifter who won’t sleep with her coach,” the athlete, who won three gold at the Rivers 2011 National Sports Festival, said.
“They said I tested positive. But after the dope test I had, a letter should have been sent to my state (Bayelsa) and another to me. But I didn’t get a copy of the result of the dope test and I requested for but nobody gave me any till now. The frustration was too much; that’s why I had to leave for America.
4753825_gloria_l
US-based Nigerian weightlifter Gloria Moses says she relocated to the United States late last year after a national coach tried severally to sleep with her before she could be allowed to represent the country.
“In Nigeria, the coaches drop better female weightlifters for those that give them what they want. I’m okay with what they made me pass through; it was a challenge and it made me stronger. ”
Moses, an orphan, added that the frustration that came with her expulsion from national camp almost made her commit suicide in Lagos.
The 2009 NSF triple silver medallist added, “I was targeting gold (in Malaysia) in the snatch and jack events because I was in-form but the coach frustrated me, denied me the opportunity. I would have made some money if I won. Thereafter, I couldn’t pay my rent; and there was nobody to help me. If I had parents, they would have fought for me, but I had no one.

'I feel that justice has been served': Obama defends commuting Chelsea Manning's sentence in final press conference

Barack Obama
President Barack Obama defended his decision to commute Chelsea Manning's remaining prison sentence during his final press conference from the White House on Wednesday.

Manning had been serving as an army intelligence officer in Iraq at the time. She was sentenced to 35 years in prison, but is due to be released in May.
"Let's be clear: Chelsea Manning has served a tough prison sentence," Obama told reporters, noting that Manning's sentence had been "disproportionate" to what other leakers had received.
