Mary J. Blige and husband sued for N2.2 million over defaulting on bank loan

When the economy is bad, it is bad for everyone. Celebrities are not excluded. Now it’s Mary J. Blige and husband Kendu Isaacs turn in the hot seat. The couple has been hit with a lawsuit, as a result of defaulting on a bank loan of 2.2 million dollars.
According to documents that Reuters obtained, Signature Bank is seeking to recover the amount of the loan plus $58,000 interest. The documents were filed in the New York State Supreme Court. The debt goes back to an advance that the Grammy Award winning singer and film actress took out in October of 2011. Blige failed to meet her deadline for payment of July 2012.
Also mentioned, in the lawsuit is Blige’s production company, Mary Jane Productions. Earlier this year, Bliges’ foundation, The Mary J. Blige and Steve Stoute Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now Inc, was said to be under fire, as well. The foundation was allegedly accused of mishandling funds and cheating students out of scholarship money. Blige’s publicist has not released a statement, regarding the matter.

Lagbaja Breaks Silence Over ‘Online Picture.

Few months after a picture which claimed to be the facial identity of Bisade Ologunde popularly known as Lagbaja circulated online, the man behind the mask has decided to break his silence over the said picture.
Lagbaja cleared the air, while unveiling his latest studio effort and ninth album titled ” 200 Million Mumu; The Bitter Truth”, at his event outfit, Motherland, in Opebi, Lagos, last week.
Reacting for the first time since the picture hit the internet, Lagbaja said, “people are very funny, this same picture has been put on internet before now with a similar story. They should know that Lagbaja is much older than the person there and I don’t have bald-head, may be by the time I have bald-head, he will look much like me.”
Although, the masked saxophonist did not dismiss the possibility of his facial identity being revealed someday, he however noted that it would be after he has kicked the bucket. ‘People will have the opportunity to see my face when I’m gone,” he said
Lagbaja also seized the opportunity offered by the informal gathering to address some pertinent issues bothering on his career and personality.
According to him, what he gains by not talking about his personal life on the pages of newspapers is his priceless freedom.
“Lagbaja is a very simple person, he said, adding “I don’t want to live a life of a celebrity. There are certain things I can do today, which most you cannot do. I can walk from my house in Omole Estate down to my Wonderland in Opebi, I’m talking about three kilometers here but most of you cannot do it. Not because you don’t have the energy but you simply cannot do it. What I gain by not talking about my personal life is freedom

A Sad Loss… Pregnant Woman Dies in Hospital Over Husband’s Inability to Pay N20,000 Deposit

The practice of asking for a cash deposit in hospitals before administering treatment and the inability to pay the requested amount has been the sad cause of death of several patients. In Port Harcourt, something similar occurred recently when a lady, pregnant with her first child, died over her husband’s inability to pay the requested deposit.
PM News reports that on November 25th 2012, a 34 year old woman, Ijeoma Umumadumere, was rushed to the  Garrison Clinic in Port Harcourt when she complained of a sudden stomach pain and headache, while cooking.  She was five-months pregnant.
At the hospital, doctors insisted her husband must pay N20,000 before she was treated. However, he had only N5,000 on him and used it to  offset registration and other costs. But the doctors and nurses would not attend to his wife because he didn’t pay the N20,000 that was being demanded as a precondition for treatment. When he realised the doctors were not going to attend to his wife, he took her to another hospital but sadly, it was too late and she died.
The anger and frustration over her death was expressed by her brother, Uzoma Ahamefule who wrote a heartfelt letter to PM News. In the letter, Uzoma who lives in Austria said he couldn’t understand why doctors in a Nigerian hospital could have treated his sister that way.
“Her husband begged the doctor and the nurses to attend to her since they had collected about N5, 000 he had in his pocket in the name of registration and other little things while he would go home and bring money. He had also told them that because of the nature of the emergency and the way his wife had been shouting while on the ground that his mind had only been pre-occupied with the thoughts of rushing her to any nearby hospital and had not thought of money or any other thing as he had even forgotten to put on shoes, but all his pleading and explanations to the doctor and the nurses had fallen onto deaf ears. With her pains increasing and death knocking and the doctor and the nurses refusing to understand, there was no way he could have left her there unattended, to go home and bring money. He took her and headed to another hospital, but unfortunately my sister did not make it as the damage had already been done before the doctors in that second hospital could do something reasonable to save her life.”
“What a country, what a failure and what a loss! This is a sad story of the sorry state of the Nigerian health policy, how Nigerians are heartlessly and carelessly neglected because of money by doctors and nurses to die in hospitals, and how I lost my sister to a failed system.”
In a lot of private and public hospitals in Nigeria, this sort of deposit is usually demanded even in cases of emergency. Doctors and nurses would refuse to attend to a patient until the money is paid. In the event that this money is unavailable, the patient lies in pain and his or her health suffers.
Her death is really sad and calls for a discussion on this practice. What can be done to ensure that in our hospitals, the life of a patient is taken as priority? We understand that in most cases, the hospitals are trying to prevent a situation whereby a patient would be treated and they won’t get paid for the services rendered, however, losing a life over N20,000 is inexcusable. Are the doctors not obligated to render their services in emergency cases or is this a proper medical practice?
Let’s discuss.

17-year-old Kills His Dad Trying To Save His Mum

The Thorpes Residence
A fight ensued between Mr and Mrs Thorpe on Saturday evening, during a bonfire party. Their son, who witnessed the dispute, turned violent and fatally shot his father in a desperate attempt to save his mother’s life.
Reports say the couple went inside of a mobile home and an argument ensued.
“He was beating her, [he] kept punching her,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter, according to newsmen. “Then they went from the living room to the master bedroom where he kept beating her.”
The couple’s 17-year-old son, Channing Thorpe, ran into the mobile home where he discovered his father strangling his mother, police says. The teen used a handgun to fire several shots at his father to kill him.
The boy’s mother also suffered a bullet wound to the thigh, the Tampa Tribune reports. She received treatment at a nearby hospital and was later released.
Hugh Williamson, who lives a few doors down from where the incident took place disclosed how saddened he was by the violence.
”You hate to wake up and hear things like that much less in your own neighbourhood,” Williamson told newsmen.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the matter. Channing Thorpe, left in the custody of his mother is not facing charges

Notorious Drug Trafficker Nabbed While Stacking Heroin In TV Transformers For Export

Drug traffickers will not stop devising ingenious and crafty ways of trafficking their substances as a suspected drug trafficker, Raphael Akachi, was recently arrested after his temporary residence at Amuwo-Odofin was raided by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency who were acting on intelligence tip-off.
Akachi who had hidden 29.4 grammes of heroin in television transformers, was planning on trafficking the drugs to China where he resides with his Chinese fiancée.
Confirming the arrest of Akachi, NDLEA Lagos commander, Aliyu Sule said, “Akachi is an experienced hand in drug trafficking; he has established links with drug trafficking syndicates in China. We were lucky to have raided his apartment while he was processing the drugs for export. Akachi gets his supplies from Pakistan and smuggles same to China. During the operation, his Liberty Jeep was confiscated and investigation is ongoing.”
Akachi who claims to be a graduate of Anwaru Islam College, Agege, hails from Anambra state and sequel to his arrest, was already putting finishing touch to the solemnization of his union with his Chinese fiancée.
“I take my time in concealing small quantities of Pakistani heroin in television transformers and fix them back into the power packs; I am not greedy for money. I regret my actions now and pray that my Chinese fiancé will understand and find a place in her heart to forgive me,” the 30- year- old suspect said.
“The concealment was near perfect as it is unimaginable for drugs to be hidden inside transformers of television power packs. It was a sophisticated mode of operation. All drug traffickers irrespective of the quantity are enemies of the state and the agency is determined to dislodge them” said Ahmadu Giade, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA while lauding the arrest of Akachi
