The Philippines' new president is waging a drug war that has killed nearly 1,800 people

When Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines' president, took office in June, he announced a sweeping crackdown on drug trafficking in the island nation.

In the seven weeks since, nearly 1,800 suspected drug dealers have been killed.

Under Duterte, 712 drug suspects had been killed in police operations since July 1, while 1,067 killings were carried out by vigilante groups during the same time frame, National Police Chief Ronald dela Rosa, told a Philippines Senate committee on Monday, according to The New York Times.

Senators have been questioning police on the killings as part of joint hearings by the Senate's Committee on Justice and Human Rights and the Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs. The senators also heard from witnesses accusing police of gunning down their family members for being involved in illegal drugs.

According to reports from Brazilian media, Jady Duarte is said to have two children with Douglas Donato Pereira aka Diná Terror, who was shot dead by police in March after being wanted for at least 10 violent crimes.

An investigation has been launched after a police officer shot dead a deaf and mute driver who witnesses say was trying to communicate using sign language.

Daniel Kevin Harris was pulled over for speeding on Thursday after cops said he led them on a brief pursuit in Charlotte, North Carolina.

As the 29-year-old stopped close to his home a state trooper pulled his gun as Harris got out of his car.

Police say there was a "brief encounter" between the two men before the gun was fired but witnesses claim the father-of-one, who was unarmed, was shot almost instantly.

A man in India spent two months swallowing knives and had 40 of them surgically removed from his stomach, according to the doctor who led the operation.Dr. Jatinder Malhotra told CNN.

"He had a wild urge to consume metal. Even for us, the experienced surgeons, it was frightening,"We were so nervous... a small mistake could have taken the patient's life. In my 20 years of practice, I have never seen anything like it."He [the patient] says he swallowed some knives folded, and some unfolded. When we took out the knives -- some were found folded, some were open, and some had even started rusting and were broken," Malhotra said.

A mother was eaten alive on a beach by a terrifying pack of 100 stray dogs as her son watched on in horror.

Eyewitnesses said the woman, named locally as Siluvamma, was walking on the beach in Pulluvila in Kerala, south India when she was set upon - having her limbs ripped off in a horrifying attack.

She was with her son, who could not save his mother.

He eventually had to race into the sea to escape from the dogs.

Speaking to reporters, he said after the incident: "My mother went to the beach at night.

"As she did not return, I went out searching for her.

Onlookers were both baffled and horrified when a naked statue of Donald Trumpappeared in a park in New York.

The life-size replica of the Republican presidential nominee in nothing but his birthday suit popped up in Union Square Park on Thursday afternoon.

The artwork - entitled "The Emperor Has No Balls" - featured a huge belly, small fingers and missing genitalia, as well as Trump's signature orange tan and unruly blond hair.

The gobsmacking statue raised plenty of eyebrows and left passers-by in fits of giggles.

US Olympic Committee apologises for swimmers' 'fake mugging' scandal

The US Olympic Committee has issued an apology, clarifying that four members of its swimming team were NOT mugged earlier this week.

The statement came as Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger flew out of Rio de Janeiro after being questioned by Brazilian police over an incident at a petrol station.

The pair were hauled off a plane as they tried to leave Brazil on Wednesday.

The Olympians and their two teammates, Ryan Lochte and James Feigen, are accused of lying by telling officials they were robbed by gunmen on Sunday .

Lochte has already flown back to the US, while Feigen is still in Brazil.

An Irish father was shot four times by gang boys at popular Spanish holiday resort, Majorca, in front of his family as his wife pushed their child’s pram beside him after unwittingly and unknowingly chatting with a member of the Hutch gang.

A source at the crime scene said to the Sun UK: “It looks like this guy was totally innocent. He chatted for a minute to a Hutch associate, little realizing who it was. Just the usual small talk conversation Irish people have when they meet for the first time on holidays.”

One local shop owner who did not wish to be named, described how she held the victim’s hand as he lay dying. She said:

 “There was a large group of them, the man who was shot, his wife, four of their children, and other adults including a male friend and two other women. There must have been around eight to ten of them in all. They were heading from a nearby hotel to a square where everyone congregates at night for an evening meal and a drink.
