8 powerful life lessons from 93-year-old Norman Lear, one of the most influential people in TV history

norman lear
It's hard to overstate Norman Lear's impact on the world of television.
That's why Oscar-nominated directors and producers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady are exploring the lasting effects of his career in their new documentary "Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You."
Lear is the creator of shows like "All in the Family," "Good Times," and "The Jeffersons," programs that not only brought in 120 million viewers a week, but challenged Americans' views on topics like racism, poverty, and abortion.
He's one of the first group of inductees to the Television Hall of Fame and has four Emmys and a Peabody Award, among many other honors.
Today, Lear is 93 years old and as sharp as ever. He spoke with Business Insider last year about his 2014 memoir "Even This I Get to Experience."
Drawing from that interview and his book, we gathered the life lessons that have stuck with Lear after all these years.

Airbnb owner plans to sue hedge funder after 1000 party guests in 'sprayathon' allegedly trash $20 million Hamptons mansion

Hamptons Party

A furious Airbnb owner of a $20 million Hamptons mansion is planning to sue a hedge funder after he threw a giant party complete with champagne guns and thousands of revelers, Page Six reports.
The owner claims Brett Barna, a portfolio manager at Louis Bacon’s Moore Capital Management, said he was holding a fundraiser for an animal charity with around 50 guests, according to Page Six's Emily Smith.
Instead, thousands of guests showed up for an event called the "Sprayathon" that was documented on social media.
"The only animals there were the people, a thousand of them. They drowned themselves in Champagne ... they broke into the house, trashed the furniture, art was stolen, we found used condoms," the owner told Smith. "So many people were there that the concrete around the pool crumbled and fell into the water. It was like 'Jersey Shore' meets a frat party."
The owner, known only as "Tommy" on his Airbnb profile, is now suing Barna for $1 million for alleged damages to the property, as well as Barna allegedly refusing to pay for the $27,000 Airbnb rental.
A source told Page Six that that the party did raise $100,000 for Last Chance Animal Rescue, as well as hired cleaners and left the house in "good condition."

The Philando Castile shooting just threw into question a central belief people have about the US policing system (Video)

Philando Castile
A 32-year-old black man whose girlfriend said was pulled over by a Minnesota police officer for a broken tail light was shot and killed by the officer late Wednesday night.
His girlfriend said he allegedly revealed to the officer he had a concealed weapon in his glove compartment and a license to carry before he was shot.
The earliest details emerging from the shooting have led to questions about its implications for a central belief people have about the US policing system, as well as an assertion frequently posited in the wake of police shootings to justify the officers' actions: If you comply with the police, you won't be harmed.

Clinton, who is now the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, has come under fire for using a private email server while she was secretary of state.

Justice Department Closes Hillary Clinton Email Probe With No Charges

The Justice Department’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email setup has been formally closed without any criminal charges, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Wednesday.
The decision had been expected and was largely a formality given FBI Director James Comey’s recommendation a day earlier against any prosecution. Even before Comey’s public statement, Lynch had said she intended to accept the recommendations of the FBI director and of her career prosecutors.
