Album Review: Melanie Fiona, 'The MF Life'

Melanie Fiona
The MF Life
Producers: various
Title 9/SRC/Universal Republic
Release Date: March 20

At the start of her second album, in the face of men who are treating her much worse, Melanie Fiona** declares, "This time I'm doing much better." "The MF Life," it seems, is full of cads and heartbreaks, even for someone with a few R&B hits and a couple of Grammy Awards. But Fiona tears into them with righteous relish on the 13-song set. She may allow herself a bit of airy self-pity at "4 AM," but when he (in this case, guest T-Pain) rolls in at "6 AM," he's not going to sleep without getting smacked upside his booze-addled head. Meanwhile, Fiona is singing up a storm on "The MF Life," delivering a welcome big voice to perhaps fill in the void of recent departures like Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse. She gets torchy on the song "Wrong Side of the Love Song," buoyant on "L.O.V.E." (featuring John Legend), bluesy on the lyrically silly "Bones" and rockin' on "Running" (with Nas) and "Watch Me Work." It's indeed better the second time around, no matter who's running her down.

Day my boobs popped out on stage that was my embarrassing moment-Goldie

Anytime anything happens that it shouldn’t be is quite embarrassing to me.

There was a time I was performing on a stage in Guinea. I wore a corset that zipped up in the front and while I was performing, the crowds were screaming and I was excited that they were enjoying the show.

But then I was getting a signal from an aide and I was like ‘why is she trying to attract my attention?’ I looked at her direction and she said ‘your corset is down’ and I looked and said ‘oh my God, my corset has gone down’.

I pulled it up and said to the crowd ‘you people are wonderful, you didn’t even tell me that my corset is down’ they just cheered.

My br*ast didn’t really show much but I was just thinking if she had not told me and I had not known, it would have gone lower and obviously that would have been a major cause for embarrassment but thank God, it did not happen.

A German gynaecologist took thousands of nude pictures of patients

A German gynaecologist is being investigated for allegedly having a stash of 35,000 photographs and several videos of naked patients, a report said on Saturday.

Medical assistants alerted the authorities to the collection of photographs kept by the doctor from Schifferstadt near Frankfurt in western Germany, the report by the DPA agency said.

The photographs and some videos showed around 1,850 naked patients and were discovered in September 2011, the prosecutor’s office was quoted as saying by the agency.

The doctor, who has not yet been charged, will appear before an administrative hearing on April 19 at which he will seek to overturn a decision to suspend his licence to practise.

His lawyer has said he would be willing to accept a job in a laboratory without any patient contact

This year's festival focused on Italy because of the Italians' exploits in Africa and their gesture in returning some of the stolen African artefacts

The Lagos Black Heritage Festival continued on the second day with a colloquium on the emigration of Africans across the Mediterranean, particularly their sojourn in Italy.

In her keynote presentation 'The Black Mediterranean: Migrants' Routes in the Global Millennium'; Alessandro Di Maio of the University of Palermo, Italy, traced the trans-Saharan sojourns of Africans in their quest for better lives in Europe.

Ms. Di Maio noted that Italy was a largely emigrating country since the Unification in the 1800s and not until 1990 when the first law on immigration was promulgated to check the influx of Africans.

This year's festival focused on Italy because of the Italians' exploits in Eritrea and Ethiopia and their gesture in returning some of the stolen African artefacts in its collection, according to Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, the festival's consultant.

The Italian Job

While delivering his paper 'Western Imperialism: The Italian Connection'; Christian Akani said that Italy also played an 'ignoble' role in the division and colonization of Africa.

"Whenever we talk about colonization, we tend to always focus on countries like Britain, Spain, Netherlands, France," said Mr. Akani, of the Department of Political Science, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rivers State.

"In my research, I discovered that Italy participated in drawing the resources and humiliating Africa, especially in the 19th century," Mr. Akani said.

"In Eritrea, they were not given the right to education, only to participate in menial jobs," he said.

Mr. Akani noted that after the Italian state came into existence in 1881, it embarked on an expansionist move to annex the remaining African territories of Ethiopia, Libya, Northern Somalia, and Eritrea; after most of the African nations had been colonized by the other European countries.

"Imperialism came to Africa because of economic determinants, not because of civilization," said Mr. Akani.

"Unfortunately, that was not the case with Italy. They came to Africa to assuage the nationalistic pride of (Benito) Mussolini. All other countries in Europe had colonies...

"In condemning other European countries for Africa's under development, Italy should be regarded as one of the culprits," added Mr. Akani.

Tuesday's event which paraded a mixture of Nigerian and Italian speakers held inside the newly inaugurated ultra modern Kongi's Harvest Art Gallery, named after Mr. Soyinka.

Adding his voice to Mr. Akani's assertions, Tundonu Amosu noted that the Italians "went to grab what was left of Africa" after the division at the Berlin Conference.

"Today the image of Africans in Italy is not a flattering one...

"The Mahgrebs engage in drug peddling and larceny.

"The Senegalese engage in selling all the petty things like elephant tusks and masks.

"The Nigerian connection is in the triple activity of drug peddling, prostitution, and human trafficking," said Mr. Amosu, a Professor of French at the Lagos State University.

"Italy is going through a difficult time and the instinct for self preservation may not bode well for Africans who are engaged in these unfortunate conditions," he added.

Nike Okundaye, an artist and social worker, recounted stories of how parents sold their lands to pay for their daughters to go to Italy.

"They go through the Republic of Benin, stay there for six months, and then travel to Italy," said Ms. Okundaye in her presentation 'From Edo to Roma - With Love?'

Other speakers at the colloquium include Peju Layiwola, an Associate Professor at the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Lagos; Maria-Stella Rognoni of the University of Florence, Italy; Olu Ajayi, an artist; and Marco Ambrosi, a photographer; amongst others.

The festival is expected to climax today Monday with the Lagos Carnival.

Spanish Police Smash Nigerian Drug Ring, Arrest 15 People

Spanish police said Sunday they had smashed a Nigerian ring that smuggled cocaine and other drugs into Spain and the rest of Europe from Latin America and Africa, arresting 15 people.

The group, based in the Madrid suburb of Alcala de Henares, would use drug mules who would injest pellets filled with drugs and avoid detection at airports, police said in a statement.

Police seized about eight kilos (18 pounds) of cocaine and 17,000 euros ($22,255) in cash as part of their investigation, which began in September 2011.

The majority of those arrested were Nigerian citizens.

Police carried out their first arrest as part of the operation in October 2011 at the airport at Palma de Majorca of a man who had swallowed 77 pellets of cocaine.

Later that month police detained another man at the same airport who had swallowed 68 pellets of cocaine.

"These people had been sent by the organisation to Madrid to collect cocaine from other members of the ring which based in Alcala de Henares. From there they would also send mules to South America and Africa to collect the drug," a police statement said.

Spain's proximity to north Africa, a key source of hashish, and its close ties with its former colonies in Latin America, a major cocaine producing region, have made it a major gateway into Europe for drug traffickers.

EXPOSED Inside ‘satanic men of god’s shrine’ on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

Sefiu Eleledu village, located off Lagos/Ibadan expressway, is  predominately known for manufacturing. But behind this trait are criminal activities perpetrated by some individuals, which, until recently, was, unknown to the villagers. Thus, the villagers were  shocked when, on Monday, mobile and conventional policemen, acting on a tip off,  stormed the village.

Most of the villagers reportedly ran to hide inside their apartments, from where they started calling members o f their families to remain wherever they were until the policemen left.

Stationing themselves in strategic locations, some of the policemen reportedly went inside the bush , where they discovered a shrine . At the sight of the policemen, some persons in the shrine took to their heels . But one of them was caught.

Thereafter, the activities of the suspect arrested and his colleagues unfolded. Unconfirmed report said the shrine was used for ritual purpose where strangers were slaughtered  for money ritual.

...the said 'men of God’s shrine’

But Ogun State Police Command confirmed that the shrine was used to dupe gullible persons. For instance, the suspect and his accomplices,  as gathered, sometimes posed as men of God and, at other times, as traditional seers. Their modus oparadi allegedly included revealing to their victims “all that concerned them” through spiritual insight. At that point, they would take their victims to the shrine where they would make them swear  to oath of secrecy before telling them to bring some amount of money  to cleanse the  victims from  evil contamination.

Report also had it that when a gullible client reached the shrine, a croaky voice, which the client would be made to believe  was that of an unforeseen being capable of revealing all the client  needed to know, would be heard. But, unknown to the client, the voice  would be  that of one of the suspects hiding behind the mat, close to a carved image.

At other times, their victims would be manipulated through fetish means and, thereafter, asked to go get money for spiritual bath. They also usually boasted to their victims of their ability to make them rich and elevate their financial and social status but on the grounds that they must  bring an undisclosed amount to pray with. Also, they were reportedly in the habit of demanding money from their clients which they claimed would be used for fasting and also enhance their spiritual insight into the clients problems.

Ascribing the feat to the command’s resolve to rid  Ogun State  of criminals  elements, its spokesman, Mr Olumuyiwa Adejobi, recalled that  a similar raid at Ogijo area of the state also led to the discovery of a  shrine used for rituals. The suspect in the latest incident, identified simply as Paul , according to Olumuyiwa, would be charged to court soon. The spokesman advised members of the public to be wary of those they transact business with and also shun any attempt to lure them into believing they could make quick money.

52-Year-Old Nigerian Woman Sets US Record When She Excreted 180 Pellets Of Heroin Worth $150, 000

Bola Adebisi, 52, set a record at the Dulles International Airport, USA, when she excreted 180 thumb-sized pellets of heroin worth $150, 000.

She has been charged with drug smuggling in a federal court.

Customs officers became suspicious on Saturday when Adebisi said she was coming to the U.S. to visit her brother, but couldn't describe him. A routine pat-down found her stomach to be abnormally rigid. An X-ray revealed the pellets and she was taken to the hospital.

Weighing over five pounds, the heroine found on Adebisi is the highest ever ingested by a suspect caught at the airport.

The previous record for an ingested drug seizure at Dulles occurred last year, when another Nigerian was discovered with more than four pounds of pellets.

So be warned leave our new step mama alone.....but you can congratulate her....

Tu Face now has six kids to himself. Huge family I suppose.

Fans might be amped about Kanye West's latest song, Theraflu," which hit the net (April 5), but the cold medicine company the song is named after isn't too happy.

Theraflu released a statement to TMZ about 'Ye's title choice, expressing their displeasure with it.

"We in no way endorse or approve of the references or use of the image and likeness of Theraflu in this manner," a company rep told the entertainment site.

Although Yeezy named the song after Theraflu, which helps fight colds, he uses the title to reference how "cold" he is towards his enemies.

As previously reported, Kanye revealed his love for reality star Kim Kardashian on the track, rapping, "I admit I fell in love with Kim, 'Round the same time she fell in love with him / Well that's cool baby girl, do your thing, lucky I ain't have Jay drop him from the team." (Jay-Z is a part-owner of the New Jersey Nets, the team Kim Kardashian's ex-husband Kris Humphries plays for.)

Kim appeared on NBC's Today Show today and said she liked Kanye's song, adding that the two have been friends for a long time and that she's excited about what the future might hold for them. And while she didnt flat out say they were dating, People Magazine reports they indeed are in the early stages of a relationship as the two were recently seen leaving a movie theater in New York City and then on a lunch date on Thursday (April 5).

There is no word yet on whether Theraflu is planning on suing Kanye West.

The Top 10 Most Popular Hip Hop Singles The Week Of 4/8/2012

The first full week of April just happened, and with it came tons of new music. Rappers must have Spring Fever or something because after a period of radio silence, we're now dealing with an outpouring of sounds from some of Hip Hop's favorites. It's a welcome addition to our iPods, but we can't help but wonder what makes an artist extra eager to drop music once the 1st Quarter fades out. Either way, there was a lot on this list from fan favorites. This week proved that musically, March droughts bring April showers.

Eminem and Paris Hilton Helped Out On April Fool's Day

Every year, we at DX enjoy making up a track title on April Fool's Day to a song that probably will never happen. Past hits include "Re-Tox," a made up Detox leak, along with some Lil Wayne and Eminem cameos for good measure. This year we opted for the oh so creative "Shady In Paris," a spin on Jay-Z and Kanye West's "N**gas In Paris," only featuring Eminem and Paris Hilton. That will probably never happen - we know this - but that didn't stop you, the audience from checking it out. We stumped you again, and that little prank made its way to #3. Above that one at #2 was the instantly successful "Theraflu" from Kanye West with DJ Khaled and DJ Pharris. Just in time for Good Friday, it seems like Ye is back with G.O.O.D. Fridays (check out "Mercy" when you can). While a prank and some "Theraflu" made it to the Top 3, the Number One stunna was Kendrick Lamar, as he and Dr. Dre delivered "The Recipe." That made it to #1; maybe KDot can share the recipe for releasing a new album to Dre. Hint Hint.

California Republic Proves That It's All Game Everything

The wait is finally over and Game delivered his latest mixtape, California Republic. Game is never one to shy away from song leaks, and two days prior to the mixtape's release, he began dropping tracks left and right. The first was a DX exclusive (thanks, Game!), "Bills Is Paid" with Nipsey Hu$$le. That landed at #4. At #5? "Skate On" with Lupe Fiasco. At #6? "It Must Be Tough" with Pharrell. Then Game showed up again at #9 with the Fat Joe and Young Chris assisted "Grey Stone." That's four Game tracks on one singles list. Talk about a record! Let's not forget though that T.I. also climbed on board the list this week with his track "Love This Life" in at #7. Depending upon when Trouble Man actually hits, it might be a good idea for Tip to drop a mixtape of his own soon, no? Closing out the list at #10 was Curren$y's joint with Wale, "What It Look Like," and somewhere in between was Childish Gambino's "Eat Your Vegetables" at #8. That's sound advice, Mr. Glover.
