Eight burnt to death in fatal auto crash in Abaji

TRAGEDY struck Friday evening when six persons from the same family, a six-year-old child and a mechanic were burnt to death in a fatal accident that occurred near Kekeshi village, along Abaji-Toto road.

About 20 other persons, including two children sustained injuries and were rushed to the Abaji General Hospital.

A witness said the accident happened when a Volkswagen Golf car with registration number AU 909 KUJ collided with an oncoming Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XB 576 GML, which caught fire, and consumed eight persons.

He said a mechanic was test driving the Golf car after repairs, adding that he made a sudden u-turn at the centre of the road while a Mack truck was coming with speed and the mechanic swerved off the lane to collide with an oncoming bus, which burst into flames.

Our reporter visited the accident scene a few minutes after the accident and saw the Golf car and bus burning with the occupants screaming for help as they burnt to death.

Motorists as well as bystanders wept profusely as they watched and a passenger that escaped from the bus said some family members travelling from Zaria to Shafa village, in Toto Local Government of Nasarawa State for a wedding ceremony were also burnt to death.

Reacting, Abaji unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Moses Audu, attributed the accident to the dangerous u-turn made by the mechanic, who drove the Golf car.

He said 20 others, comprising of 13 female and seven male sustained injuries and were taken to Abaji General Hospital.

The eight burnt corpses were buried in a mass grave by the accident scene after relatives identified them.
